Mi ee Rayyithunge Faharu! (Veringe Fahreh Noon)!

Don’t get me wrong. As a patriotic citizen of this country, I’m eternally grateful to our national team for bringing indescribable joy to our hearts, by beating India in the final of the SAAFF football tournament. It should be noted though, that, while we bath in this red-sea of euphoria, we shouldn’t lose the bigger picture!

First of all let’s ask ourselves the question, why the whole country seems to be uniting behind this victory while many of us are politically divided. The simple answer is that this victory for us has been like a feast at the end of a day of fasting. When you see food at the end of a day of fasting, you will naturally savor the food better. Dictator Gayyoom’s 30-year-long rule didn’t bring us any happiness of this scale. In fact we should be criticizing Gayyoom for depriving us for so long – not thanking him for this victory.

Gayyoom’s regime has miserably failed in promoting football in this country. Just as tourism developed due to the enterprising efforts of many private investors, football too developed mainly due to enthusiastic club owners and zealous football fans. This has very little to do with FAM’s vision or Gayyoom’s dedication to football.

Given this fact, it was surprising to see the national team run up to the old man, with the SAFF trophy, after winning the trophy at Colombo’s Sugathadasa Stadium. Many of the nearly eight thousand Maldivian supporters who packed the stadium and sacrificed their voices for the team were disappointed that the team did not come to the fans first. It wasn’t Gayyoom who scored the winning goal and this victory wasn’t based on the regime’s efforts to develop football. So, why, asked some supporters, did the team cozy up to the dictator and virtually dedicate the victory to Gayyoom.

Gayyoom’s lack of vision for the development of football was shown on Sunday upon the arrival of the national team. At the arrival ceremony a journalist asked Gayyoom how the government plans to use this victory as a springboard for further success. Gayyoom said that the most important thing would be for the people to unite behind the national team even in the future. He didn’t mention anything about creating a football academy / school for young boys or about building an international level football stadium or implementing a better inter-atoll football league. Gayyoom’s answer showed his lack of football knowledge and that he is obsessed with his political survival.

Gayyoom is using this victory to gain political capital. He said that he will make sure that the trophy is taken to each and every island in the country. Imagine the huge cost of taking the trophy to more than 200 islands! This is indeed a great victory for our country, but everything has a limit and it would be sad to see an old man who has used an iron-grip to rule over us for more than three decades use this sweet victory to gain his own political capital, while the unassuming citizens of this country gets carried away with the old man’s rhetoric.

As an ardent fan of Maldivian football and as someone who has opposed Gayyoom’s dictatorial rule for the past fifteen years or so, I would urge the people to use this victory to unite against Gayyoom’s dictatorial regime.

The motto of our national team in the SAFF Cup was “Mi ee Aharumenge Faharu” (This is our turn). A sarcastic fan told me that the next cup is the Riyaasee Cup (Presidential Cup). This is a tongue-in-the-cheek reference to the upcoming presidential election. I would say that our motto for this Riyaasee Cup should be “Mi ee Rayythunge Faharu” (This is the people’s turn). Indeed we shouldn’t let Gayyoom use this victory to shroud his shortcomings and his selfish ambitions to remain in power. We should use this victory to ushering a new era for the Maldives. An era in which we shouldn’t be just content with winning the SAFF championship; but look forward to winning even bigger things.

Bushry, I agree most of the areas of your news article. I was one of the supporter who went to Stadium and i stay on stand from the beginning till the end of the Game, and we all had keep our voice no-stop and even today after the game i am not fully recovered my voice, i had a lot of dreams for our country and our football team when our football team win an international game the happiness i enjoy is same as our team, so i always as a supporter expect that during such an event in the play ground when there is a goal scored then the team players should run and comne to the areas where supporter stay, similarly we all the supporters were expecting that the mean after getin the trophy should come to our side and raise some extra voice together, but it was so sad that the Team has ignored and totally forget their back team which is the supporters.

Yes Gayyom will do what ever he can to get any credit out of other peoples ahrd work, this is not new. As you said lets make this is our time, so as our Riyaasee Faharu" let defeat Gayyom and celebrate full victory from the Dictator.

Yes Bushry Gayyom has no knowledge about the future development of this country whether its education or sports. I fully agree with you that our country should have an international stadium and inter atoll football leagues need to be conducted and even we should be given the opportunity to learn the real sports through a modern institute, it may be a faculty or an academy.

Gayyoom might think that he is getting the credit. In fact, it's not true, simply not true. The reality is that the notion of politicizing the whole thing will eventually backfire.

So, there's no chance for Gayyoom in the Riyaasee Cup 2008.

All the Champions carry their trophys to the supporters after winning the trophy, not thier country leader. We are happy we support and our team win, but sad news is DRP HANIM forced our great champion team to carry the trophy to the dictator Maumoon while all the supports in the stadium waiting the team to bring the trophy to showm them.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree with you, I also like to congratulate the team for the victory. However, perhaps the team must realize that it was the people who supported them with out a cent from the government. As a Maldivian living in Sri Lanka, we went to the stadium cos we wanted to support the Maldivian team. The crowd was overwelming and with that kind of support the national Team was surely inspired to win. I feel supporters did help the team to win too. At least for that the Team should have brought the trophy to the people first rather that Gayoom. Indeed we were dis satisfied with the action of the team.

Though Gayyoom is a dictator, as the elected President of Maldives, he has the right to celebrate this event as much as he can.

Should he not join the team in Colombo?

Should he not reward the team? She he avoid touching the trophy?

Should he not televise through national television?

What do you guys expect dictator to do at a celebration like this?

I am sure every one of you will blame him if he has not done those things above.

Though I am an MDP member, my feeling is that all the Maldivians regardless of criminals, politicians etc, everyone has the right to celebrate at the highest capacity they could.

We also cannot say Maumoon have not worked to promote football. Whatever he has done it for him though he is a cunning, opressive DICTATOR!

Bushry i think your hatred of gayoom has blinded you from the fact that politicians across the board(opposition included), are far more corrupt than this man.

a simple example is the recent hike in the salary of parliamentarians. averagin 60,000 a month (the president is accorded 75,000), they have turned out to be nothing more than shamless moneygrabbing vultures, who dont even bother to attend majilis sessions, let alone contribute anything useful!! when tvm aired the peoples frustration, they wasted no time in blasting information minister!!!?....not a single member was able to justify this hike in slaries. not one.

so, i ask, are your articles an expressions of concern for the sorry state of the maldivian people, or are you just venting ur frsutration with an old man who's stayed in office long enough?

prove me wrong by writing a lengthy article condemning these parliament members for pocketing the nations limited wealth, in exactly the same manner which they have accused the president of doing! accuse them of high treason, and betrayal. demand thei resignation in the same breath that you piss on maumoon.

becos the people hav realised what maumoon has bem sayin all along; the opposition does not hv the interests of the poeple at heart. they are the same band of traiters who tried to oust the gov in the 80s, spilling maldiavian blood, in their thirst for power. allied with businessmen they seek to replace the old guard with a new ruling elite, and suk the nation dry.

the presidency of maumoon has not been perfect, far from it. but during his tenor we have seen incredible economic growth, and prosperity. given that we are still one of the poorest countries in the world, our road to develeopment has not ben easy....the fact that he continued to form his government around his family and friends reflected a lack of human resources and political allies; after all in the game of politics one cannot govern if ones own government is not of one's own- this has been the mentality of his rule. it was more of a neccesity than of plutocracy.

thos who claim to have the know how and the means to uplift this nation to one of greater prosperity to its people, have not demonstrated this in the least!!!! all they do is talk...trying to woo us with false hope...and lies

their is not one single candidate in mdp with the sincerity and devotion to the PEOPLE, needed to give back power to the people; from a state within state , to a public state ; of the people by the people and for the people , so to speak.

in my opinion, sadly enough, their exists not a united opposition front that could do better than maumoon has done for the country. every single face in mdp leadership is a hypocrite, seeking to decieve the people into electing them!..."we' l build hospitals, swerage systems, schools etc within SIX MONTHS of coming int power"??????...lies and more lies

fortunately, the intellect of the maldivian people still prevails; they are now slowly realising that the oppostion mdp represents everything they don't want in a future government. and maumoon is the lesser of two evils.

this countries political future, ergo its future its future is not a game, its not a football match- where the side who employs greater tactics or strategy wins(as often poltics is in other parts of the world) wins; deceiving the people into electing them; this is not about winning for mdp, or about beating maumoon; it should be about the people of this country- who would best serve their interests! who would win for them! and if this means re-electing maumoon again, they so it must be! becos mdp CANNOT AND MUST NOT come to power; the despotism and corruption and self-interest it represents is far worse.

if the dsire for change of government is to be realised, then thos voices that genuinely seek reform must be given say; the independent candidiate dr.hassan saeed is this countries best bet. he is no businessman, nor has he any history of trying to shed dhivehi blood in the lust for power! He has demonstratd his desire for greater good by resigning from the current gov after acknowledgin its faults once he realised it; that is the character of sincerity. the fact that from the onset he resisted mdp and continue to field himself as an independent shows how unlike him mdp's ideals are.

SAY NO TO MAUMOON, SAY NO TO MDP

hahah did i get on ur nerves anonymous? its how i know i'm right.

'If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear' i think Orwell said that.

MDP has only to blame itself for the current political morass it finds itself in. And this has only worked to DRPs advantage.
People are realizing that the leadership of MDP is no more than an alliance of traitors and tycoons, who have not the slightest interest in delivering own its promises. The people are no more it's priority that it is for DRP.
Maybe we should give moyanaasiraa a chance also and elect her to office; you know give her a chance to prove herself.

I do not wish to see Maummon get elected, anymore than I want Munnavar or Anni to take the helm of this country. Everyone of them are just as authoritarian and despotic; one hasn't turned up for work in a month; the other disdains other peoples opinions that don't agree with his autocratic views. A recent parliamentary fact finding commission uncovered ibrahim hussein zaki & munnavar's dirty hand involving herethere.
Are these the champions you want to replace the dictator with?

Perhaps your father(or mother)is one of those parliament members earning a cool 60K, while the average Maldivian makes a teeny tiny amount of that. Out goes one dictator, and we have a whole band of shameless money grabbing vultures all lined up.

My vote is not with the dictator now in power or the klepto-plutocrats in MDP. But if I am to choose between the two i'd rather go for the more predictable & more frail one.

IF you are sincere in you claims of being a lover of democracy(which i inferred from the fact that you accused me of not being one, for not agreeing to join you in your GOLHAABO rhetoric ), you would not let your disgust of gayyoom blind you from the fact that MDP IS fast becoming everything we don't want in a future government.
And you would fast put your support behind those few sincere voices of reform in the current political quagmire.

SAY NO TO MAUMOON, SAY NO TO MDP

(can you count how many '.' i've used?)

"Mee aharumenge faharu"...a good slogan to use for awareness campaigns in the atolls and islands: it is extremely important that action groups are formed within those concerned Maldivians to go to the islands and explain to them that this is the opprtunity to give back somehting to the whole nation, for the sake of the future of our children. We need to explain to the common man that their votes in the presidential election should NOT be sold to the 'highest bidder', nor should they vote in despair and vain to a regime that has already expeired, or even stay at home! Really, the situation with the majority of Maldivians are STILL that they will just vote to the person who give them most money or give them the much needed facilities! WE GOT TO STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!

But, the wrong thing is that he made the Saff cup to be moved all around Maldives when there is so much waste and our budget is on its verge....

so you need to ask your self do maldivians really deserve freedome.
have they really fought for it.
are they willing to give up thier lives for it.
unfotunately eventhough we all want freedome few of us are willing to stay the course.
sometimes makes you think whether we so cowardly of a people ,so hypocritical of a nation.
    do we really derserve it.
