Establishing a “Maldives Trust Fund” to build a giant “safe Island” for the future!

The main focus of our foreign policies should be to attract investment from abroad and also establish a "Maldives Trust Fund" for the future. A certain percentage of our revenue should be saved in this fund. Foreign donors should be invited to donate to this fund. The purpose of the fund should be to build a huge “Safe Island” - hopefully by reclaiming the whole of the Vaavu Atoll - at a height of at least twenty to thirty feet above sea level.

This landmass will be able to accommodate at least three to four hundred thousand people and have a huge transshipment harbour and almost unlimited land for factories and other industrial projects and work.

At a time when climate change and sea level rise is a major danger looming in our future, as a small island nation we stand in the high risk category of nations that could be wiped out from the face of the earth if we do not act promptly. If this scenario becomes reality, some say that we could become refugees in the back yard of some country such as Australia. But that should not be a scenario that we should entertain. WE can plan and meet destiny in readiness if we act now.
So why not establish this “Maldives Trust Fund” and start saving for a “rainy day” that could very well see us standing in salty rain!

When a group of people who couldnt manage a political party takes up leadership position do you reckon such visions can be realised?

  2. Do we really gaurentee our safety by a "safe island." Our antions is hardly ever marked in the world maps. Our total industries are much smaller than a single manufaturer of a developed nation. And then we are talking about changing it? It doesnt sound much of a meaning to me atleast. As for the mega or huge or safe or whatever the island you mentioned, I just have one thing reclaiming the land is a failed method, as it leads to erosion in another place. This is like killing one to make other live.Atleast I think so.

Your dream of a giant safe island is a possibility; however, only attainable within 20 years. Much more urgent issues exist such as sanitation, health care, transportation and so on. While high expectations remain for Nasheed, his new cabinet seem inappropriate. Ministry of sceence and technology was created for Jameel, while he has no academic or practical experience in the field. Gasim has no experience with police affairs, yet he takes Home Ministry hoping to influence atoll chiefs in the up coming parliament election. Nasheed, seems to be powerless when it comes to Gasim and Hassan Saeed's self interest.

no. you are not going to reclaim vaavu atoll and make one giant safe island. you don't have any right to reclaim one of the most beautiful areas in the Maldives. that has to be preserved for generations. even now many tourists go there for diving. why do u need one giant safe island? even if u need it, you will not reclaim Vaavu Atoll. this decision is final. we will not allow u to do it. if we hear you talking more about this, we will officially launch our campaign.

No need of reclaiming Reefs. Do you wanna create a holocaust of reefs and its marine life?

We have enough islands and enough land the 350,000 people, if we manage it properly.

Stop the absurd idea of creating giant islands and building mountains on top of it.

Wake up Environmental activists! Let us hear your voices in protecting our reefs and marine life.

Anyone seen water world, its perfectly normal for tourists to live in water bungalows, so why can’t we build small floating cities in shallow reef which can house 500-1000 people.

Now Nasheed is the smartest guy in Maldives, before it was Gayoom. How much progress he will bring to Maldives & how long it will take for someone else to outsmart him..... We just have to wait and see.

bushry has to take blame. he did not write an article about the corruption of Sawad. So now Sawad is the tourism minister. This is all Bushry's fault.

  18. Some people accuse me of trying to promote Addu people as ministers; but this blog-post should perhaps convince such people that I have no such agenda. The four appointments that I have criticised are all from Addu, i.e. Dhiyana (Addu Atoll), Dr. Didi (Addu Atoll); Dr. Musthafa (Addu Atoll) and Sawad (half Adduu).

Some people also accuse me of trying to bring only PhD holders to the cabinet. My criticism of appointing Dr. Musthafa Luthfee as Education Minister perhaps shows that having a PhD alone doesn't qualify someone to be minister!

One reader accused me of supporting Dr. Hassan Saeed. This isn't true. Actually I strongly argue against holding a mid-term election in 15 months (as proposed by Dr. Hassan). I think Anni should get minimum four years. Within this period he should amend the constitution to make the length of the presidential term as four years! The same should be done for the length of the Majlis, so that will hold presidential and parliamentary election every four years.

  19. For one Im also quite concerned about this governments possible attempt to 'lease' tourist resorts for 99 years. I hope you will pick on this and will do some research on it, and bring an analysis of it.

As I see it will only benefit the present resort owners, and will give ownership of the islands to the few who holds the resort islands.
