British head teachers are being encouraged to swap their high-pressured jobs for teaching posts in the palm-fringed atolls of Maldives (reports http://news.bbc.co.uk/)Maldives' Minister for Education Dr Mustafa Lutfi told BBC that Maldives is seeking teachers familiar with the English curriculum in order to boost standards in schools on some of the country's 200 inhabited islands. Dr Lutfi says that while 12 to 15% of the government's budget is spent on education, an average of only one in three students obtains five O-levels at grade C and above.
"Currently our standard is poor compared to the money we spend on education," he told the BBC. "We want foreign professionals to come and help us turn our schools around."
The move is part of a wider strategy by the government, which came into power in November, to improve education, which also includes the privatisation of some schools.
"Previous education policies centralised schools and colleges in the capital, Male, where one third of the country's population live. We need to give the other two thirds similar access to high quality education," Dr Lutfi said.
British teachers with three years experience will be offered a monthly salary of 10,000 Rufiyaa (£523) and accommodation, and will teach in one of the country's 227 schools.
"We want foreign professionals to come and help us turn our schools around."
ReplyDeleteit is quit confusing when the minister said this! i just wanted to know what is his intention. if he wants to change the way that we dress, how we speak and whome we love he is most welcomed to bring such teachers! i can also understand the importance of bringing professionals to teach our children. however we should not forget their propegenders behind all these voluntry services.
i don't want my lovely son to get eight 'A' reports in o'level if he is has eight ear rings on his ear at the same time
This country is already sold for foreigners..Our president will not stop foreignisation of this country until he sees the last piece of land in this country...He's selling everything we have for our children and children's children. Just think about what happened to those countries where large MNCs operated when they pulled out of the countries....
ReplyDeleteBut what happens now is your lovely son fails in all subjects AND has the eight ear rings on his ear. So it seems you are agreeing that your imaginary missionaries are more capable than what we have now.
ReplyDeleteDR.MUSTAFA LUTHUFEE Pl.send a headmaster to Hulhudhoo Schoo first. And then u try foreing teachers.Doyou think u are very smart to tell us HULHUDHOO School is a vashaajehey school ekey.WHAT ? IM HULHUDHOO SCHOOL SUPAVAISOR THAVEEL AB.MUHUSIN
ReplyDeleteI cant understand why this governemnt is hell bent on undermining the professional and competent manpower in this coutry and blame all the ills of our society on one mans 30 year rule.We all had individually contributed to this hopeless situation in this country bcos we chose self interest above nations interest. We didnt have people with integrity. We dont have peeople with nationalism in their blood. We chose to buy our future for 500MRF.We chose to keep silent when people were butchered on the streets. We chose to be extremly obdeient when drug mafia takes over the nation and sell every land piece on this nation, call it democracy, call it the rights of the people, call it nation buiding.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Maldives after 30 year rule of Canary clan, worse than Gaza or Kashmir.Every land piece owned by big brother(thanx to Mou signed by a drunken joker).
Cant you write about all this.I can understand bcos people want to write about converting theemuge to a univerisyt as if thats the most important agend a for this nation.Call it propaganda to fool the public ,keep them dremaing like previous dictator. And coming to the point I call upon this Addu Education Minister to be patriotic and the only way you can develop this nation is by training Maldivians and to achieve ur political goals pls dont take the fast track and sell this nation to missionaries and etc.
Hail Maldives. We love our nation.Dont let the Maldivian race and coutry to go to oblivin bcos a drunken mafia was chosen by our self centred mass to lead this nation.dEemocarcy ends with ur vote.Right example in Maldibves.Addu kaloa
yeah its true, we really NEED british teachers. doesnt matter where they come from as long as YOU are in YOUR religion right?
ReplyDeletei mean you dont have to follow their path or do whatever they are doing yeah?
y cant they train the local teachers well...give scholarships ...train the people in the islands ...the foreigners from India and Srilanka also have poor language skills ...however, students get good results ...when we test teachers n send them back to the ministry y r they sending them back to schools ...to develop the place we need better trained locals ...we need more ..trainers to train them ..only then it would benefit in the long run

ReplyDeleteIt is better to train the locals. They have the capacity. Have trust in ur people. Make them aware of the need for education. I dont know why the govt. is always going after the western people? If the govt. is not ready to stop their "extreme passion" for the western culture, the entire maldivians will follow their culture. the ultimate result will b total chaos in the country. So pls try 4 the beterment of the people. May Allah help u to realize the truth.
