Could Hassan Saeed and Anni do a deal with Yamin?

The news coming of MDP is that Anni has - contrary to the predictions of some analysts – agreed to become the running mate (Vice President) of a leader from the alliance. There are five major players in the alliance – i.e. MDP, Dr. Hassan Saeed’s association, Adhaalath Party, Umar Naseer’s IDP, and Ibra’s SDP. Of these five groups, MDP of course has the largest number of members and has the proper mandate to contest in the presidential election.

So, why then is Anni willing to recede and let another candidate run for president, while becoming such a candidate’s running mate? Umar Naseer has publicly said that this is a “political trick” of Anni. Umar didn’t explain how and why it is a “trick”. Maybe he thinks that anyone who isn’t cozying up to his “great leader” (Buruma Gasim) is playing tricks. Umar has of course, quite expectedly, proposed the name of his business partner (Buruma) as the “best” candidate to contest on behalf of the alliance. Ibra isn’t of course so forthcoming, even though it is obvious that Ibra’s party is backed by Buruma and his partner (Ilyas Ibrahim). Ibra says that his party will back a candidate that is elected from a primary held amongst the members of all the parties in the alliance. This is a delaying tactic, and Ibra and Umar very well know that Gasim has the necessary funds to “buy” the votes of such a primary.

A source within Adhaalath Party told me that the party’s Spokesman, Sheikh Shaheem, favours Buruma Gasim (who incidentally financed Shaheem’s studies for a PhD). It is also rumoured that Gasim gives a hefty monthly cheque for Adhaalath Party and hence some members in the party’s leadership (including Shaheem) backs Gasim for his “generous” help. But this source tells me that Adhaalth’s leader, Sheikh Hussain Rasheed and Sheikh Ilyas are against making Buruma the alliance candidate.

In short, it could be assumed that three of the five major players in the alliance favour Buruma Gasim. But this figure is quite misleading. MDP and Dr. Hassan Saeed’s association actually has more combined members than the combined total of members in the other three parties. It is also a fact that very few people will actually back IDP and SDP in a national referendum even though Adhaalath Party may acquire a significant vote.

It would be ironic if Adhaalath Party endorses Buruma Gasim. Being a basically Islamic party, Adhaalath would be hard-pressed to explain why they would back a candidate whose major earnings are from the business of liquor (alcohol), which is deemed an illegal trade by some Islamists. Adhaalath would also be hard-pressed to explain why they would back a candidate who probably uses and gives more “Ribaa” (bank interest) than any one individual in the country. Bank interest is considered to be Ribaa which is haraam (illegal) in Islamic Sharia.

Probably the best option for MDP would be to forget about SDP and IDP and try to come to an understanding with Dr. Hassan Saeed’s association and of course convince Adhaalath Party that their best interests does not lie with Buruma Gasim. If MDP and Adhaalath Party and Dr. Hassan Saeed come to a common understanding, then the arguments of IDP and SDP would become irrelevant.

It is obvious that if Gasim becomes President of this country he would most probably not allow any other person to even competitively run a small corner shop. He now controls all the fisheries zones and is a major player in the tourism industry and controls major shares in the petroleum market and cement market and cooking-gas market and shipping market. He is also into poultry farming and even education (Villa College). Gasim has become a business giant that is too cumbersome and could drag the economic development of the country if he gets to be president of this country. It is obvious that, despite claims to the contrary, Gasim would save Gayyoom from the public, if Gasim becomes president. It is Gayyoom and his brother-in-law Ilyas who made Gasim so rich. He cannot bite the hand that fed him for all these years.

It is widely believed that three of the biggest business groups in the country - Universal Group and Champa Group and Dhamas Group – are behind Hassan Saeed. This is understandable given the fact that none of the big businesses would want to be ruled by a person who is their direct competitor. Would Universal and Champa get a fair deal if Gasim becomes President? - Most probably not.

It would be a major coup for Hassan Saeed and Anni if they could bring Yamin and his PA group into the alliance-fold. Despite the fact that Yamin is a half-brother of Gayyoom, Yamin is unhappy with the close relationship between Buruma Gasim and Gayyoom. Yamin and Hassan Saeed are political foes but Yamin’s dislike for Gasim could override whatever disliking he may have for Hassan Saeed. So if Anni could become an intermediary, MDP and Hassan Saeed could bring Yamin into the fold of the alliance. This could become the most significant political coup of the current impasse.

There isn’t any faultless candidate. No one is perfect. Gayyoom has made sure of that. From the “damaged goods” that we have; the best possible choice would be to back a team of Dr. Hassan Saeed and Anni. For obvious reasons, Ibra and Umar Naseer and Gayyoom and even Dr. Munavvar will work against such a team; but there’s the possibility that Yamin may come to support such an alliance. Let’s think of the country and forget about individuals. Let’s look beyond the façade and rosy words. Let’s give Dr. Hassan Saeed and Anni a chance to take us out of the quagmire that Gayyoom consciously created to divide-and-rule us. @

The writers view is very much base on the common talks without given any valid arguments, very much notice the writer is very much on a side not in national level but more to a friend and family relation with the Dr. Hassan god father.

Nice articles here.Very rich in content.Especially the one published on 26th April( Munawwar:A defeat....)is very interesting and precise.Although the article may taste bitter for Munawwar's supporters I'm sure they, including Munawwar won't argue about it.It's so real and surely the tips in that will help him in any future appearances.
Regarding Mr Anonymous comments I would say sometimes common talks do materialise or real facts become common talks. So it goes either way.Tc guys

blood is thicker than water. yameen if in will be a spy if in ithihaadh. just because he hates qasim doesnt mean that he will be a supporter or loyal fan of ithihaadh or hassan saeedh or anni. besides he is the lord of drugs and gang voelence and bankruptsy of stelco in maldives. crdibility of ithihaadh and peopl's trust will take a dip if you do a deal with the devil like that. this is a lousy idea.

ibra's talk has some merit even if it is a delay tactick. ithihaadh should strongly consider it. because if some one doesnt liek hassan or anni they have an option other than maumoon to vote. in a second round ithihaadh can naturally endorse the person who gets the most vote. ithihaadh can give a helping hand to all the opposition candidates who campaigne. should not dismiss the idea.

    Insightful post.
Actually Anni does not need Yamin. But Anni needs Qasim and that is why Anni has step out of the leadership post. Ironically, the decision to install Qasim as the Alliance candidate lies with Maumoon himself. Yep, Maumoon holds the remote for Qasim. All Maumoon needs to do would be to give a slight push to Qasim out of DRP. So in effect Maumoon will CHOOSE the leader of the Alliance.

qasim is the weakest choice even though he has money. because qasim is a robot controlled by maumoon. at the last minute he might even withdraw from the presidential race if maumoon wants it. so watch out.

A most intriguing appeal! What convinced you that Dr Hassan Saeed has a better chance of beating Maumoon? Because Anni is willing to relinquish MDP nomination to be Hassan's runningmate? Let us consider other possibilities. Hassan and Shaheed could still be Maumoon's agents. If Hassan becomes the alliance candidate, it could be a win for Maumoon, and a great disservice to all those who have relentlessly campaigned and sacrificed their time, energy and resources for a real change.

Consider this. Unlike Qasim, Mr. Yamin is a free man. He does not have have a Governmnet job and can focus on campaiging. But Qasim is stuck with Maumoon, without any freedom to choose his options. Also it looks like Maumoon is helping Yamin politically while holding Qasim on a tight rope around his neck.

This is not about anyone doing a deal with anyone. What is at stake is the future of our nation and we have limited time to decide. It seems that you strongly considers the word on the streets and you favours conspiracy theories. Why not give a thought to this conspiracy theory?

There is not a single reason that we should trust hassan saeed. As some others said, he could be an agent of maumoon. Recently anni's tone changed and he was talking about giving a palace and a pension to gayoom once he is out of office. Anni never talked about bringing gayoom to justice. What kind of an example are we going to show to the future generations by rewarding someone who have sucked our blood for three decades? Anni's change in mind and thinking of giving awards to a dictator can be seen as a betrayal to the victims of this brutal regime. So by this, one may come to the conclusion that anni have cut a deal with gayoom and anni is giving the candidates position to hassan saeed who also seems to be an agent of gayoom. So what is happening is gayoom is competing gayoom in the next election, the only difference is some new faces are around. Why don't u give a thought about this? How can you come to the conclusion that hassan saeed is the best candidate? What is hassan saeeds contribution to the reform movement by which we should trust his integrity and sincerity ? Why is that all the parties and everyone have to come to the conclusion that hassan is the only candidate capable of competing against gayoom? Is it because of his walking style? Dr.Saheed would say everyone should think carefully and with understanding about choosing an alliance candidate. But why is that, everyone is understanding and careful when only they choose hassan saeed, If anyone oppose hassan saeed then they are the agents of some "thorufaa" or they are using "delaying tactics"?

You are among the few writers in the Maldives, who i believe is genuine and truthful to the people. So plx keep on enlightening us with u r articles and plx keep u r eye open. Be critical of everyone not just a "thorufaa".

What I don't understand is how could Ibra argue for a primary of Ihthihaadhu, when first thing he need is to hold a primary of his party to select who would be standing in the ihthihaadhu primary from his party, which means extreme delays.

  10. I listened to the special meeting held last night by Adhaalath Party in which they explained to the public the situation regarding the Allaince choosing a candidate. It gave a relatively clear picture of the status quo regarding the issue, and it was welcoming to hear that MDP and Adhaalath have joined hands to strive hard in this cause of bringing a single csandidate from the Allaince. It was also good news that both IDP and SLP are also ready to move forward together in this cause. One would hope that Dr Hassan Saeed also agrees to do so. This is the time for unity and putting forward the interests of the general public instead of just party interests. There seems to be hope and light at the end of the tunnel.

I reckon MDP should join with PA (with or without Hassan Saeed & Adhathalth) and also bring Dr. Waheed in. Since Yameen has a good relationship with Dr.Waheed, he could be the mediator between MDP and PA. In such a scenario, Dr. Waheed could be the presidential candidate and Anni the running mate. Also this would bring Monaza Naeem's party into the 'new' alliance. Heck with Umaru Naseeru and Ibra. This way Anni would fulfil his promise of bringing a candidate from the alliance, only the alliance is different from the preveious one.

I should say "sketch and finalize the path sooner" or else it wont get a time to campaign for 30 years regime.

    Comment:
A dark horse candidate is one who is nominated unexpectedly, without previously having been discussed or considered as a likely choice. Often a dark horse is selected as a compromise when other, more prominent candidates' factions cannot come to an agreement.

  14. It's surprising how many people are rooting for Gasim to be nominated, despite the obvious conflict of interests.

I agree with the writer - none of the MDP leadership are capable of leading the country. Anni, for all his charisma, is more of an activist than a statesman.

That leaves another oft-discussed name, Dr Hassan Saeed.
Conspiracy theories are part of Maldivian politics. Everyone is an 'agent of' everyone else. Thick movie dramatics. If Hassan Saeed were an agent of Gayyoom, he could have easily succeeded Gayyoom within the DRP, whose chances of winning an election are brighter than any of the individual alliance members.

Dr. Hassan Saeed and his New Maldives group are quite charismatic, educated, and act and present themselves professionally.

They are the only ones who have taken a publicly moral stand, are left of center, and modern.

In the absence of any other candidate, I'm pretty certain whom I shall vote for, considering these circumstances.

As for Adhaalath, they're influential, but their destructive ideologies are not what the country needs right now.
