Adhaalath’s Hypocrisy and Gasim’s idiotic presidential bid!

It’s is a sad day for democracy in the Maldives. As we are about to see the climax of the democratic struggle that we started about tow years ago, we are seeing signs that the so-called reformist “leaders” are selling their souls and lying though their teeth.

It is ironic that Adhaalth party, which portrays itself as the defenders of Islam, has joined a coalition with the newly formed Republican Party. Gasim’s Republican Party has the largest number of resort operators and sellers of alcohol in the country. They have the largest number of businessmen who use “Ribaa” which is forbidden in Islam. The question is, why has Adhaalath joined forces with a group of alcohol sellers and “Ribaa” eaters?

It is obvious that this unholy alliance will not help the democratization of this country. This so-called coalition will not help bring about a fruitful climax to our struggle for reform. If Adhaalath Party were a human being, it could be described as a soulless hypocrite. If it weren’t so tragic, it could even be hilarious to see Gasim and Monaza Naeem and “Sheikh” Hussain Rasheed holding hands! What a bunch of losers!

Speaking at the façade which was described as the Republican Party’s inaugural congress, one of its Deputy Leaders, Jabir, said that if his party comes to power, they would distribute free land in Hulhumale free of charge. I think someone should stuff some economic sense into Jabir’s head. This is probably the start of a series of election-lies that Gasim and his cohorts will try to sell to the unassuming people of this country. We should beware of such empty promises.

Until the last minute, I hoped that Adhaalth would not abandon the last remaining ethical remnants that they held. Now that they have abandoned the people of this country and taken the side of their benevolent financier, it is time to take a look at the remaining options in our democratic struggle.

It was a breath of fresh air that Ibra’s Social Liberal party (SDP) has ruled out any possibility of joining Gasim’s so-called coalition. The only hope now is that Anni, Hassan Saeed and Ibra could come to some sort of understanding. It isn’t a coincidence that the only three reformist leaders who seem to know what they are doing, are Anni, Hassan Saeed and Ibra.

If one listen’s to Hassan Saeed and Ibra and Anni, one could feel that these three people are aware of what democracy is and that they know how to solve our deeply ingrained economic and social problems. If Anni and Ibra and Hassan Saeed could somehow come to one platform, they would be a formidable force to reckon.

Only such an alliance of these three leaders could prevent Gayyoom from coming to power again. Only such an alliance e of these three leaders could prevent Gasim’s idiotic and selfish bid for presidency. As an ordinary member of MDP (who happens to be from Addu Atoll), I plead to Anni and Ibra and Hassan Saeed to overlook any differences, and come to a common platform to save us from the evil forces that are being arrayed against us.

If these three leaders could not come to such a platform, and if Gasim or Gayyoom wins the election; we should not listen to any of one of these three leaders. If such a scenario were to come to pass, I would personally label these three leaders and betrayers. Dear Hassan and Anni and Ibra! Now is the time to help us. We need your help. Please help this poor and suffering country of yours. Your motherland is calling for you. Please listen to its cry.

You have marked a very important issue that needs wider attention. If we really need change for good, then we surely cannot bring in board Gasim. And now we have seen the true colours of the so called regious sheiks.

The only serious alternative that is remained with us is still Anni, who maintained his stand from the begining, and for one we can all trust.

As a youth from Addu, I call on our fellow Adduians to reignite our support to Anni, and increase our presence and voice in the party, surely MDP is the only solution.

  3. Mr bushree has presented his point with strong words. But I wonder if your article is written just with two sides. is this an inviataion indirectly to seek support for Anni? I do belive that Republicans is simply the tiol by Gasim to make his republic of vilaa maldives, but my point is simpe, is there nayone now left who really could give a fight back to Maumoon.

    Bravo!!

Gasim & Gayoom are two sides of the same coin. And the reason why the 'Republicans' are endorsing the very Marketable Gasim is the same reason why the American Corporate and leadership elite chose to put George W.Bush in office for 8years; An idiot planted in such a position of power can be manipulated in every possible manner and as best serves their own interests- effectively nullify competitors, maximize profits through total control of Government Institutions & it's regulatory bodies.

Really, it's the most ideal Business investment- elect an idiot and the nation is yours for the taking.

It's a win-win for the stakeholders and for Gasim. The people then become merely the Consumer entity, and as Jabir's words indicate they don't assume our intelligence to be any better than Gasim..

I applaud Ibra for having the courage to defy this money-crapping monstrosity.

The argument that it is Gasim who can bring down Gayoom is unfounded. Did God Almighty send revelation to the Adalat with this information? On what acceptable basis are they saying this? Where is the reliable poll for that? It is an absolutely unscientific decision. Plus, people's preferences are not fixed. They are bound to change. Adaalat does not seem to believe in the ability of democratic learning. If any party should have been more determined, it should have been Adaalat. After all, God Almighty is said to help those who on the right path. Shame on the Adaalat.

I applaud Ibra and Hassan Saeed for not joining the coalition of evil. What Bushry has suggested here, that Anni, Ibra and Hassan Saeed join to defeat the evil coalition makes sense. How do they do it? I think Ibra and Hassan Saeed should rally behind MDP, because independent candidate Dr Saeed and SLP candidate Ibra do not have the party machinery that MDP has. MDP has a huge supporter base now in the north, and its traditional support base in Addu and greater south, though fragmented, can be revived through a coalition of these leaders. Possible solutions.
    1. Ibra can leave SLP and join MDP. He can be Anni's running mate. In this scenario, Dr Saeed can withdraw his candidacy and support Anni-Ibra 2008. Dr Saeed can join MDP too and receive a cabinet post, or remain in New Maldives, which is not a political party, and join a coalition cabinet.
    2. Ibra can withdraw his candidacy and support Anni-Saeed 2008. Ibra can either join MDP, which may not be very attractive in this scenario, or remain in SLP and join a coalition cabinet.
    3. Ibra can remain in SLP, Dr Saeed can be with New Maldives, but both can withdraw their candidacies, and rally behind Anni and his running mate, and receive posts in a coalition cabinet.

Personally, I think the time has passed now for Anni to be the running mate of either Ibra or Dr Saeed. This could have been possible before but not now. Anni is not an independent candidate and MDP supporters would agree to only an MDP candidate. Technically speaking, Anni can quit MDP and join Saeed as an independent or join Ibra in SLP. But without the grassroots supporters of MDP, I don't see the equation working even if Anni is a popular person.

If either Ibra or Dr Saeed don't want to join Anni as a running mate because of ideological and other differences, or because of their egos, then the best thing they can do for the country now is to withdraw their candidacies and rally behind Anni and the running mate he will choose.

Anni, Ibra and Dr Saeed are the youngest and most popular politicians in the race. (Umar Naseer just doesn't count). Each of them have the chance of becoming President of Maldives one day. If Ibra and Dr Saeed make some sacrifices now, they have the chance of building their political profiles further, receive higher degrees of popularity, and become Presidents one day.

I think what Phoenix has said above, makes lots of sense. It now remains to be seen whether Dr.Hassan and Ibra and Anni can work something out between themselves. If not, then we are doomed. Seriously!!!

the whole things shows, what a larger than universe size ego can do to you. kathivalhi geli mariyanbu geli koshi dhandu geli and the only thing left is, your full size ego. thats is the case with hassan and ibra.

anni deserves what he has achived for the sacrifices he made. he dared to stand up and fight when it was unthinkable for anyone to do it. if it is another country anni will be given the same treatment as madela or gandhi. but this is maldives.

the rest enjoyed the fruits of his work and determination.

i hope ibra and hassan for Gods' sake will leave their egos and think with a clear mind and do something good for us. that is getting rid of qasim and maumoon. i thank qasim for helping us to identify hypocrites and greedy opportunists

hassan join judiciary and finish what you have started.
    ibra- lead the parliment
    anni- be president.
when we get rid of qasim and maumoon the three of you can have a fair elction and may the best win.

When he was the Attorney General Dr Hassan Saeed said on public TV that he will not give the MDP Haruge back to MDP. This was during the second Black Friday events in 2005 August. What Hassan Saeed did not realise was that it was the job of the courts to decide such things and not for the AG to decide. Later, as an independent candidate he once again showed that he has a blurred understanding of the distinction between Executive and Judiciary when he spoke about the issue of the government taking action against current president gayoom if Gayoom is unseated from power. Once again, it will be the judiciary who will take care of any injustices committed by Gayoom. Dr Hassan, who fails to realise the functions of the Executive branch of government, is not fit for being President. But after a brief training he can be put as our head of Judiciary. Ibra has proved that he is a great parliamentarian, as Male' MP in the People's Majlis, and in his role as Chair of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. He can be a great Speaker of Parliament. As the presidential candidate from MDP, Anni can be our President. This is how, like anonymous above me said, I see these 3 young and ambitious people sharing the three branches of power. But the scenarios that Phoenix has put forward, ie: Ibra or Hassan being the running mate of Anni, is not too bad either. Let's wait and see.

Anni said he did not want to contest for presidency any day. But now he says he only wants to become president and nothing less.

everyone wants to work for his interest. everyone is trying to market his ideas. if someone goes along with that idea he becomes a wise man, if not he is a hypocrite.

Adhaalath also has the right to do what they think best. They will have their reasons. No one should say they are hypocrites.

If Anni or Ibra or Hassan becomes president, does anyone belive they will close down the resorts or sell only coca cola in the bars ??

In the past Bushry's writings were somewhat sensible. But in recent times they are biased and attacking.

Few of you seem to be interested in religion. You people believe what the Western people tell you regarding religion. You are there to discredit if an authority on Islam says something according the most authentic sources of religion.

i take back my previous comment that an alliance between anni/ibra or anni/hassan saeed will be good. that is only wishful thinking. i also have reservations about dr hassan saeed because of his past collaboration with gayoom. looking back i don't think hassan saeed will be an ideal running mate for anni.
