Buruma Gasim's Mudhalu Zakath and some other random thoughts…..

1. Ex-president (Maumoon Gayyoom) still holds presidential ambitions.

2. Gayyoom also has ambitions for his elder daughter (Dhunya) to one day be president (or at least vice president) of the country.

3. Gayyoom also hopes that he gets the prestigious opportunity to be head of the Commonwealth or hold a senior UN job in the near future.

4. Yamin is still delusional as to believe that the majority of the Maldivians support him and look upon him to be a great leader. (Hence Yamin continues to have presidential ambitions).

5. (Buruma) Gasim too is delusional as to believe that Maldivians will be paupers and orphans if they don’t get his help for medical and educational bills. What many probably don’t realize is that Gasim doesn’t give Mudhalu Zakath to the state – he rather spends that money for medical aid and educational aid to those who seek his help. Mudhalu Zakath is something binding on us. Not something that we give out of our generosity. Hence, since Gasim doesn’t give Mudhalu Zakath directly we can assume that whatever aid he gives to the poor is not something that can be interpreted as his generosity but rather as something that is binding on him. No one should seek popularity for doing something that he is bound to do!

6. Buruma has led Adhaalath party to believe that if he becomes president he would give a free hand to Adhaalath party to reform religious teachings in the country. It would be perhaps folly for Adhaalath party to run after this mirage, hoping that one day Buruma can make Adhaalath party the de facto leaders of the country. It would be perhaps more pragmatic for Adhaalath to grasp what they have right now and continue to work with the current government as they are quite successfully doing now.

7. Of course people such as Umar Naseer, Ibra and (Kutti) Nasheed have presidential ambitions but the top six of Maldivian-presidential-ambitious list are (1) Dr. Hassan Saeed, (2) Gasim, (3) Yamin, (4) Gayyoom, (5) Dr. Waheed, (6) Mohamed Nasheed (Anni). Of the above six, the top four would wish that the current government fails so that they could realize their ambitions sooner.

8. President Nasheed is still scared of Gayyoom and some of his cronies. Nasheed also seems to be scared of some officers within the police and the MNDF. He seems to be waiting to become his own man only after the parliamentary elections in February.

  1. How about Umar Naseer? He too have presidential ambition. Doesn't he? Is he the 7th in the list!! N which Nasheed, former legal reform minister?

  2. Random Thought number 5 is baseless accusations even to my feeble mind. 'Qasim doesn’t give Mudhalu Zakath directly'.Bushry is agreeing that Qasim does indeed give Mudhalu Zakath indirectly here. Very recently i heard in one of those religious lectures given after zuhur prayer and broadcasted by TVM and radio that a person can give Mudhalu Zakath on his own. Does this accuastion mean that religious lectures is all idle talk?

  4. Dear Anonymous 21.01;
There's a difference of opinion regarding amongst the Islamic scholars regarding giving Mudhalu zakath to the state or personally. Most scholars say that it is better to give Mudhalu Zakath direct to the state. But even if you give it personally you should not seek attention and seek to be labeled as a generous person for giving aid to the poor out of your Mudhalu Zakath quota.

  5. Dear Bushry,
How does Qasim seek attention? also how does he seek to be labeled as generous? Please explain.

  6. What if MDP hopeful parliamentarians fail to win? Will it also be the failure of the current government. Most people are already loosing hope. Release of notorious prisoners serving long sentences, too many state ministers, its like now every household must have a state minister, uncapable people being appointed as secretaries..this is based on a comment i heard from a government employee...the list goes on. appointing november 3 strategists to defence top post.. too few good things compared to bad.. even Male' is becoming more 'gondu'. Its now like part of southern india.

    Proof?

    Again proof?

    3. 3. Gayyoom also hopes that he gets the prestigious opportunity to be head of the Commonwealth or hold a senior UN job in the near future.

    Again where is your proof?

Maldivians are more educated now just to believe a statement.

The last two have got power. So it is natural all those who has ambitions to be thirsty for power.

    What's wrong with that?

  11. Anonymous 15/12/08 21:01 I guess is Bushry himslef. I maybe wrong.

  12. This is democracy now. So we must have leaders in waiting. Whats wrong with having Presidential ambition? All the MPs and those contesting for MPs and other political positions will have such ambition. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Governments don't fail because someone wishes it to fail. This Government will fail quickly if President Nasheed and MDP try to go it alone. MDP doesn't have broad support in the country and won the election with the support of Qasim and Hassan Saeed. Never forget that.

MDP is trying to dominate the government and trying to run it according to the wishes of MDP activists forgetting that the public gave a mandate to a broad based coalition.

This government will fail and loose whatever support it has very quickly if it continues to make such blunders. Nasheed's rivals will not need to do anything. All they have to do wait and watch!

  13. 15/12/08 21:27 nothing wrong my dear.
power should be used for the benefit of all citizens not for the benefit of individual politician or their families . we already know the top 4 are fat greedy .

  14. 15/12/08 21:42 if hassan and qasim were clever enough they would have contested in the votes with maumoon. but not nasheed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Out of the top four Presidential hopefuls listed above both Hassan Saeed and Yameen will make excellent Presidents.

Both are highly qualified, experienced, highly intelligent and very clever politicians. Both can and will have far greater support than President Nasheed in this post-Maumoon era. Nasheed had support as an acitivist to oust Maumoon but few actually support him as a President. We can see why. Looking at the way his administration is moving, the public majority's skepticsm is well justified.

But in the interest of the nation, we should point out Nasheed's mistakes and try to get him to correct his course and complete his Term. Only then, can the public get any benefit. People are desperate to improve their lives. So let us crticise positively and raise our voices to ask the Government to unite with its allies and work in the public interest instead of just MDP's political interest.

  16. Anonymous 21.51 is very pragmatic. He seems to support Dr. Saeed or Yamin but he feels it would be ebst that we give the fledgling regime of Nasheed at least a few eyars before we condemn them.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Qasim can never win the Presidency. We thank him for his assistance to the poor, but he is unfit to be President. Yameen has the full capacity and experience to be the President but he doesnt have much support and is tainted by allegations of corruption. Dr Hassan is also highly qualified and very popular and might be our next President. But, he will never challenge President Nasheed before the end of Nasheed's term. He is a loyal ally of the MDP Alliance. Already there is talk about MDP and Hassan's Qaumee party merging to form one party. So the theories of friction between them is just imaginery.

  20. Bushry, I think whether Gasim's payment of zakath will be acceptable to Allah will only be judged by Him alone. not you, not Gasim.. I think you are letting your opinions get way too ahead of your wisdom

    ReplyDelete
  21. Dr Hassan Saeed has already said many times that even if President Nasheed doesn't hold a mid term election, he would not challenge Nasheed. In fact Dr Hassan supports Nasheed to complete 5 years to enable the government deliver its campaign promises to the public. And that is what is important.

Unlike what some people think, Hassan and President Nasheed get on very well and are in close contact regularly. These are politicans and they will have some sort of rivalry but they are a team. Only Qasim has been too arrogant. But even he would probably rejoin the government.

We have succeeded in getting rid of the Dictator. Now the job should be to build our nation. A leader has been chosen for 5 years. And we all have to unite behind him in this effort.Dr Hassan, Ibra and even the Republian Ministers believe this. Only DRP is spreading all these rumours of a split in the alliance.

  22. "Nasheed is scared of some people in Police and MNDF"?? Wonder why? Could it have anything to do with the appointment of convicted traitor DB Shahid as State Minister for Defence? Could it also have to do with the government releasing prisoners from jail outside parole?

"President Nasheed is waiting to become HIS OWN MAN AFTER THE ELECTIONS"?? Isn't he his own man now? Isn't he the elected President? Dosn't he have powers of the President under the Constitution? Isn't he running the government?

How do you suppose he becomes his own man after the elections? By winning a majority in Majlis? Has MDP's government become popular after the elections? Isn't it a fact that every day the government is getting less popular? Are people in the mood to give the Majlis to MDP? Isn't it more probable that MDP would actually loose their seats and majority in the Majlis?

  45. It's like a domino effect, from one symptom to the next and we are all gonna fall because of this distrust and backbiting. While there are good and bad people in each generation we should openly speak our mind and express. I see a lack of that happening in Mr Bushrys views. He is all in for “Hare Rama O our Anni, lead us blind people, thou you are the wise”

This is the status our bloggers/public figures/news men/thinkers.

Ask the Great Wheedeen...as he once said to me. There are something which you see that you pretend not to see and there are somethings which you hear which you pretend not to hear. - What a great (Rotten) advice from that silly man.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Maumoon was a tyrant and a despot. He was corrupt and inefficient. The people were desperate to get rid of the Dictator at whatever cost and we have succeeded in doing that.

And now its time to correct all the mistakes of the past and bring some good positive results for the people who voted for Nasheed and the new government. MDP supporters cannot talk about Maumoon all the time as an excuse to cover any blunders of the new government. MDP has got the chance to prove themselves and show results. Other wise, we will throw out this government too.

The President's position is not a reward. Its a responsibility. And if Nasheed cannot perform, he must go. But its too early to decide that. All this talk of others being power hungry is rubbish. We will not be distracted by such nonsense. Deliver results. We want the government to deliver their promises. Not excuses. We will wait with reasonable patience. But not forever.

  49. Contrary to what Anony Mice has said, I have not been a complete praiser of President Nasheed. If one follows most posts on this blog one would notice that many of the posts are either critical of Nasheed or critical of his government. Even after Nasheed was elected I have criticised his cabinet and many other policies. If I have to saitisfy soem people that I am unbiased then I would perhaps have to condemn Nasheed and attck him and his government in each and every post. I did not get anything from Anni and I do not need or want anything from him or his government. My "love" is this country and I will strive to get the best "deal" for my "Love"!
In doing so I may appear to be sometimes "idle" and sometime "favouring" someone and sometimes "critical" of someone...but when the dust settles, those with wisdom will know that the superficial emaning and the hidden emaning of some of my writings aren't as they appear to be. Think about it.
Some of us, afterall, have to practice a bit of streetwiseness and wisdom. Look at it as a "Kifaayathuge Farul"! :-)

  51. Bush i had to say it because, you have ignored one key issue that affected us in the past (Gayoom Era) and that will affect the future generations to come.

Namely the increase of resort lease period to 50 years. With the current status of wealth distribution, this should be strongly opposed. There is no equal opportunity where public could buy shares to take a slice/reward of our most valuable resourse.

Without a proper mechanism to spread the wealth the 50 year lease is gift to make the rich richer. There is no way in which ordinary citizens to benefit for this sleazy deal. We do not see public companies, no employee share schemes, no labor unions to advocate on behalf of workers. If these were in place and proper laws on taxation on profit, capital gains, and an active stock market to trade the shares of these resort companies then people wont object if the islands were leased out to 50 years.

Anni is simply repeating what Gayoom did, he is appeasing with the Resort owners to finance the current deficit in budget. Gayoom used to take advance on new resorts and Anni is taking an Advance on all existing resorts by increasing the lease period. Its all the same.

I oppose this policy of Anni's Government. But some people are just paying lip service. We wanted change and we voted out Gayoom, not because the New Government could make a rotten deal with Resort Owners to economically enslave us for the next 50 years. The Citizens of this Nation NEEDS FINANCIAL FREEDOM so that they could live a happy and prosperous life.

And guess what just yesterday someone came to me; begging for medical assistance. I gave what i could afford. When do we stop this lowly destitute living.

  54. Bushry,

Could you please kindly recommend the President to rename Shaheed Hussain Adam Building after Shaheed Evan Naseem.

This will give the dead Evan and his mother some relief.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dont mock Evan Naseem, Though he was a drug addict sentenced to jail. He died a brutal death at the hands of his guards and caretakers. He suffered in this world, maybe God has made him suffer in this world so that he could be granted paradise in the after life. One gud thing about the this sad incident is that it has awaken a nation in its slumber for the better.

maybe u have ambitions to be president...most people does...so whats the big deal about that??
and not everyone become a great president..jus like we are seeing here with this idiot anni...

  61. please don't compare maumoon and anni that's just like comparing hitler and mandela as we thought earlier, but it seems to me this another hitler in more democratic system, doing what ever he thinks rather than thinking about his people ( releasing harcore prisoners without even consulting parole board, to the capital while he's with body guards to cover his yaagooothuge while normal citizens are awake whole night), this shows he's not respecting the why majority people voted him to go to anneh dhivehiraaje not alsalvador

do u even know the meaning of the word 'shaheed'??
To call evan naseem a 'shaheed' is an insult to our religion..
according to people who were in jail with him the guy was a drug-addict who used the pages of the holy Quran to clean his own shit...
he was killed by the police beatings that he got..and dat was wrong...like everyone else i condemn that..
but evan naseem a shaheed???....no man, he aint that..

OK, I give up, maybe not Shaheed Hussain Adam building, how about another building after "Shaheed Evan Naseem" after all you claim he was beaten to death by the brutal police, so he becomes a Shaheed.

Been over a month and I have not yet seen Mr. President! Would love to see him! By the way it was very nice of Mr. President to have an exit plan for the criminals who now roam our streets. We are now so happy about these so happy free criminals that we keep our front doors locked 24 hours a day! Pity we do not have a guard in front of the house the way our nice Mr. President does!

All that Anonymous 16/12/08 19:38 has written is fact. You don't know the difference between positive criticism and 'gudho gudho' govun. Maumoon may havee made us destitute. That doesn't mean Anni can go against the law. Whoever is in that post has to be responsible. If we don't point out President Nasheedh's faults who will?

Even if Maumoon was the ruler at the time, those actively involved with votes has the responsibility of the votes. So its possible for Anni's brother in-law to play with the votes..remember the ENRON case in America, how the accountants fooled the CEOs'.

  99. From the list... Yamin is the most capable person to be the president. But I personnaly know that he doesnt have a presidential ambition. But he is interested in economic welbeing of this country. He is intellegent, smart and simply amazing in what he does.. Look at the Majilis. His thoughts and talks are unmatched by any other in the chamber.
If people say he is corrupt.. Look at Majilis Jalsaa..He is practically asking the government to investigate that so called corruption agaist Him.
May be he never smiles at people..he is not social.. but he is a leader who can achieve many things for Maldivians!

  101. BREAKING NEWS

  102. I think the justification given by President Nasheed on hiring Nov 3rd co conspirators is entirely wrong. We are not running a Government after winning a Revolutionary Armed Conflict. No democratic government hires armed terrorists who were convicted of killing soldiers and unarmed civilians.
Though they have been pardoned or served their sentences they must not be hired to run or implement the policies of the Government. He must have shown some respect to the relatives of people who died /injured because of their cowardly act.
The President should have taken the moral high ground on the matter; adhered to the upholding of justice or goodness.
And is not President Nasheed who should give explanations to defend their hiring. The conspirators should explain why they could be trusted by the public and should apologies for the pain they caused to the country and their citizens.
The Joke is: President Nasheed said that currently Shahid is the most highly educated person in the country in the field of fire fighting (the only excuse he can think of by hiring him). In reality the better part of his life/career (14 or 15 years) was spend in prison for terrorist activities. So imagine how he might have used the skills he gained through his (HIGHLY) education to gain experience in the disaster management field. May be he gained experience by counting the iron bars in his jail cell.
I wonder how the MDP governing body let go of serious crimes as terrorism against the country. Well this is the extent of the influence by Kerafa Naseem (Nov 3 terrorist) on President Nasheed and MDP. These people should be removed from MDP and the Government.

  103. I am surprised that Bushry failed to mention about Ilyas Ibrahim, Abbas Ibrahim, Holhi fumey Hameed and his son Shaheen Hameed. Shaheen who is a New Zealand citizen is the biggest financier of DRP now. Gasim is history and Dr. Hassan is better off now than running for President and lose again.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Unless Mausoom, Chubby, Kutti Nasheed and Tasneem run DRP no one is going to pay attention. With Firihenkulhi Hameed's kids and Endherimaage baggage no one is going to support DRP again.

  105. about mudhalu zaka i have a different opinion. you might be a multi millionaire and you can say that every year you grants an amount of money as MUDHALU ZAKA however the thing that we must understand is that you cant give any amount of money as MUDHALU zaka. Mudhalu Zakaai is a fixed percentage of that money that you make as profits and in this regard what mr. Gasim Grants to public as medicals and education bills must be less than what he has to pay as mandatory Mudhalu Zakai.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I guess what Gasim hands out as donations is more that the fixed amount of Mudhalu Zakai.

Anyway there should be a proper way to audit/validate whether they have paid Mudhalu Kakaai or not. Because most of the traders will never pay it. This is important as it is a religious duty of the Government and individuals.

    ReplyDelete
  107. so i guess wat bushry is sayin is tat its wrong to have ambitions?

    ReplyDelete
  108. i think it will be a good idea that we make a mechanism to check whether tycoons pay Zakaa. Religous authorities can use of some kind of mechanism to check this through the law. if these tycoons do not pay zakai we can let them account for in the hear-after however the religous people can advise them time to time about this important thing that the lack of it is leading to corruption of the society.
