The Dr. Waheed factor and Dr. Munawwar’s appointment as Gasim’s running mate!

An online poll by Jazeera Daily showed that Dr. Hassan Saeed won the recently held question-answer debate organized by the Information Ministry. Dr. Hassan got nearly half (42%0) of the votes while his closest rival, Anni, got 30%. A similar poll conducted by Dhi-FM also saw Dr. Hassan top the results, even though this poll was later nullified by Dhi-FM, due to some technical problem.

After the debate organized by the Information Ministry, among presidential candidates, many people were of the opinion that Dr. Hassan Saeed appeared to be the biggest threat to Gayyoom. At a press briefing after the debate Gayyoom had his harshest words directed at Dr. Hasssan. This too goes to show that Gayyoom now does not consider Gasim and Anni to be serious contenders.

The appointment of Dr. Munawwar as the running-mate of Buruma Gasim has obviously weakened Gasim’s candidacy. Gasim may have thought that he could get the bulk of votes from Addu Atoll by making an Adduan as his running-mate. But Gasim seems to have forgotten that Dr. Munawwar’s political track-record is full of failures. I bet that even Gayyoom can get more votes from Addu than Dr. Munawwar. Speaking to young and enthusiastic Adduans, I get the feeling that most Adduans now favour Dr. Hassan Saeed as the most viable candidate who can oust Gayyoom and bring a stable and prosperous leadership to the country.

Now that Gasim and Gayyoom have selected their running-mates, the biggest question now is who will be the running mates of Anni and Hassan! Just as Gasim made a mistake in selecting Munawwar as a running-mate, I believe that Gayyoom also made a mistake in selecting Thasmeen as a running-mate. Few Maldivians know Thasmeen and most people consider him to be a quiet man who doesn’t have the political clout needed for a race of this nature. Similarly it would be a mistake for Dr. Hassan to select the most obvious candidate (Dr. Shaheed) as his running-mate. I fully agree that Dr. Shaheed is a very capable leader but it would be a mistake for Dr. Hassan to appoint someone so close to him.

Maldivians still look for some kind of indefinable character in their leaders! Gayyoom had it – and still has a lot of that mysterious character. I believe that Dr. Waheed is someone who has some traits of such character and hence Dr. Waheed could be an excellent asset as a running-mate of either Dr. Hassan or Anni.

I still largely stick with my previous statement, that the three leaders who can make a difference right now are Anni, Ibra and Dr. Hassan. I would though add one more name to this fray. That’s the name of Dr. Waheed from Gaumee Ittihaadh Party. I know that many Maldivians are critical of Dr. Waheed for resigning from his posts too quickly; but at this critical juncture, Dr. Waheed could bring plenty of vigour to Dr. Hassan or Anni if either of them appoints Dr. Waheed as their running-mate.

In a future, democratic government – whoever wins the next election - I believe, the following people should get some senior position in the government:

1. Dr. Hassan Saeed
2. Mohamed Nasheed (Anni)
3. Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra)
4. Dr. Waheed
5. Dr. Shaheed

There are of course many other leaders and potential-leaders – some who are directly involved in the current struggle and some who are watching from a distance. All of them could be involved in a future government in varying degrees. There are people such as Dr. Farahanaz Faisal and Dr. Ugail and Dr. Riza – who could contribute immensely. But the above four leaders could play a pivotal role in saving us from the grip of Gayyoom and taking this country to a new level of prosperity, stability and excellence.

If these five leaders could not come to some sort of compromise, then we may very well see Gayyoom and Gasim top the election and those two names could go to a second round of voting, leaving the rest in limbo. That would be disastrous to the nation.

    It is as you say.

If these enigmatic, charismatic, educated young leaders could come to a compromise that would definitely be this nations best bet...

If this happens it would be great, Unfortunately Dr.Waheed nor Dr.Hassan maybe willing to compromise......

Bushry is still very angry with Gasim Ibrahim, because of his Monday Times Issue. if Munavvar is failed than one could say, Bushry himself is a failure, because he couldn't run Monday times, nor he was able to stay in any place. But the reality only bushry knows, he knows it has nothing to do with his failure, it was because the system was so corrupt to him breath. For instance Munavvar's departure from goverment cannot called as a failure. because its the govement whom we are fighting. than comes Anni. weather bushry like or not, Anni is the biggest threat to democracy. is the person who have failed MDP, its because of Anni and his greedness that MDP lost the leadership. In fact Anni is worse than Gayoom. As for Hassan Saeed, bushry is still forgeten, except Fedu, and some Hulhudhoo supporters, all the other island still Munavvar's support base is strong. One other thing is though hassan saeed think that he have support from Raahjethere, the polling day these people will not vote for him because of his addu nationality. People are still sensitive in Maldives to give the top most post to an Adduan. This is a fact, Hassan saeed himself will be surprised when the election result comes. Gasim is the most electable candidate, and the only candidate who can deliver promise. Its not a joke or an illusion.

"People are still sensitive in Maldives to give the top most post to an Adduan." This persons racism is not restricted to just Arabs apparently

If you think Munnavar still has a large support base in Addu, then you obviously aren't from Addu!!

Gasim is as electable as Gayoom. Think hard on this statement. This is the reason why neither should be elected to office!

Lets not forget this islamist mysogynist has forged a dangerous alliance with the ultra-conservative adalath!!

Adhives Gabu Qaaroonu Gasim tha emme kamu dhanee raeeskamah???

hassan saeed, i agree is an intellectual. but he was one of the most corrupt people in the cabinet. he abused the power invested in him to further his own interests (he was directly responsible for his brother being the addu atoll chief- a personal request to Maumoon) and misused his power against the people of namoona dhoni incident to name a few. and how could you just say that hassan saeed has secured most of the votes from addu? did you make a survey? munavvar on the other hand, is a soft spoken person who has to stomach the bad publicity (thanks to people like you, who refust to see the big picture). forget, dr. waheed; his motto is- when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. people like him, we certainly do not need.

munnavar is like a kathuru fani and a failed politician. anyplace he joins will be eaten alive. any party which brings him on board in a top position is doomed to fail.

Munnavar is a soft spoken innocent saint, being bullied by us dho? HAHAHAHAHAHAH
mann thivarah dhen meehaku 'clueless' vaanee!!! LMFAO!!!!!

Im not goin to even tell you about munnavar, about whom i know more than you ever will...

As for hassan saeed being corrupt, some statements no matter how hard we may try or wish, can never become true.....compared to gasim n munnavaru (both remnants of the old guard, patron saints of yesterdays filth and despotism; not surprising that these scum of society are regrouping under a new banner) hassan saeed is a breath of fresh air; far from those corrupt elite elements assembling in endherimaage n maafanu villa.....

Hassan Saeed is an enigmatic, educated, charismatic leader in the making. Those who have grown used to having money speak for them now stir uneasily in their enclaves as the foundations of the old order start to show cracks...Gasim and Gayoom are the epitomes of this order.

History will soon bear testimony on how Gasim single handedly drove the nations budget aground, systematically and by design. For this i give the oligarch due credit.

Seems a good article, and it is understood that there is no problem at all in expressing Bushry's personal opinion based the information which he has. I respect most the peoples value and i think different people will have different opinions and thats what is more important withing a fully functioning democracy.

Let me share my views regarding the candidates, i would try to make more shorter.

I agree with Bushry that Dr.Munavvar or any other person in their life will experience some success and failures, this is the reality no one can deny this fact. Of course no one will always enjoy the power of success and nor the impact of failures.

For me in my personal understanding that Anni is a complete failure withing this reform work. Let me appreciate the hard work which Anni had contributed, i always appreciate that, but mind you its not only Anni, the list is too long; even Bushry, Sandhaahu DD, DO Sappe, Dr.Waheed, Dr.Munavvar, Ibra, Naushaad, Sandhaanu Luthufee, Sandhaanu Zaki, Gogo Latheef, Moosa Anwar (Moosa), Reeko Moosa, Gasim, Sheikhu Hussain Rasheed, Sheikhu Fareedhu, BA Naseem, and the general public and most importantly the young energetic people had contributed a lot of valuable work to bring reform to this country, so these peoples value added work will always be appreciated.

In my personal view i dont like Gasim to run and administer this country, this is the fact which i personally beleive, but by saying this statement it is not simply enough to end, we also need to find a person who is most probable electable candidate from the list.

The entire country is seeking for a CHANGE AND REFORM, there is no doubt about it, having said the need for change is an evident that we need some one who has more chances to get electable in order to oust Gayyom. I neither like Gasim ( to lead a country) nor Gayyom ( to continue Dictatorship) but if the people (who are sleepless to see a change) have to make a choice choosing from Gasim or Gayyom, i believe it would be Gasim.

As some one said that the main bottleneck or obstacle MDP facing through out its operations was ANNI. This is 100% correct, i personally have witnessed this and many people as well. Anni is a very complicated and difficult person who cant integrated with others who demonstrate diversity of knowledge and ideas, most importantly ANNI always wanted to do things the way he wanted, if that is not agreed by the other participants then that will be a big problem, Anni will not accept any opinions, he will in deed bring his unrealistic arguments.

Many people left MDP because of ANNI, this is very clear and no one will disagree, exceptional to ANNI's supporters. So this is also a failure which obviously indicate a failure to establish a governing group, lets say MDP couldnt established a governing team, which they can utilize if they get the power to administer this country, yet ANNI is unable to decide his running mate, it takes ages to ANNI to decide his running mate, these are simple evidence that ANNI is not a capable leader nor a competent leadership level candidate, of course there is no doubt about ANNI as an ACTIVIST.

I think Anni should represent the Parliament, and i believe thats a wonderful place where Anni can contribute a lot with regard to the peoples desire in communicating the message within the Parliament. Thats a kind of job which i in my personal opinion feels Anni should hold.

Of course Dr.Hassan Saeed seems to be the most approapriate candidate out of the 6. And his team seems to be a good collaborative team in consolidating the overall issues. But the big question is do he has majority support to win this election and defeat Gayyom? I am not quite sue? I think its hard to predict, as some one said that the majority of the islanders has a sensitive feelings not to caste their vote to an Adduan, due to uneducated background and manipulation among them. This is a true fact, that our people has less emphasis to understand the main objective when it comes to make a good decision. But i think it will take long time to people to understand the reality in life and to adopt personal change to them selves, this day may be after some 20 years or so. we dont know.

I think when we the people get more access to understand and meet these candidates and ask questions about their failures and their false promises which never materialised will help us to make our decision when fully evaluated all the candidates. I think the historic TVM A&Q session held on 3rd September 2008 demonstrated the beginning of this what called as "providing access of information about the candidates" and if such sessions increase in the media will no doubt help people to get educated and make a wonderful decision, i think even that show itself proved us that Dr.Saeed did very well compare to other candidates, and like Bushry said the biggest threat which Gayyom faces is Dr.Saeed, i think i have to agree with that. However it Dr.Saeed is not seeming to be an electable candidate, i am not referring to the best candidate but an electable candidate who has more chances in wining this game, it seems very obvious that person is Gasm.

Lets not forget that, we dont need Dictator Gayyom any more. Lets first aim to clean Dictators messed administration and then lets get ourselves some release and work for the true candidate may be next term, or may be withing the new government.

Please this is a personal opinion, this is not a must to be similar to every one, different people will have different views and opinions based on the information they have. so lets see how others rate these candidates and their competence. and who can defeat Gayyom.

Addu votes are smaller compared to Male, so if Qasim wants to win he needs to win Male by a majority.

Choosing Munawwr will alienate many non- Addu supporters. If Qasim is wise, he would

    1/ choose a Male candidate.
    2/ choose an educated person.

Ideal running mate is Qasims advisor Dr. Shaugee.

One of the major trends these days is glorifying PhDs.

Names Dr. Ugail, Dr. Riza, Dr. Simad, Dr.Saeed, Dr. Maunawwar, Dr. Firdous, Dr, Majeed, Dr. Abdulla Waheed, Dr. X, Y and Z shows that there is some fundamental error in our thinking.

Do you know that even Qasim can get an Honorory Doctorate, in fact quite easily if he so wishes.

Future generations who read this blogs will laugh at our stupidity.

Mind you there are very achieved people like Dr. Hassaan Shafeeu and many other who do not blow their own trumpet.

Dr. Hassan has a 'halo' around his head. so DID Munawwar, but not any more.

I am laughing because Bushry has put Dr Shaheed among top 5 leaders in Maldives. Has Bushry forgotten that guy's stupid rants on BBC and TVM? We now know that Bushry is biased to Dr Hassan Saeed. Fine. That is Bushry's freedom of expression. But we will use our freedom of expression to show why Maldivians should not vote for the corrupt Hassan Saeed.

Everyone is saying Dr. Hassan is corrupt like the DRP says. but those peaople dont show any clue or evidence do prove it. I am confused.

  12. I also tend to agree that Dr. Waheed will make a good VP for Hassan Saeed. But before that they must win the election. And to win the election they as a team need to overcome some key problems. One is Waheed’s image of being half-hearted and prepared to flee at the flip of a coin. The other is Hassan’s lack of party infrastructure. Waheed’s party, though registered, does not have any grassroots organization. In this respect, they are like the two proverbial blind men leading each other.

I also strongly agree with you that unless opposition leaders learn to make compromises, Gasim and Gayoom, will go into the final round by default. “Either we learn to live together as brothers, or perish together as fools.” –Martin Luther King Junior
