Which candidate will “Bushry” endorse?

When the deadline for application to the presidential election expired, six candidates had applied for the election. Those six are:
1. Mohamed Nasheed (Anni)
2. Dr. Hassan Saeed
3. Gasim Ibrahim (Buruma)
4. Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra)
5. Umar Naseer
6. Maumoon Gayyoom.

Of these six candidates, no sane person would vote for Gayyoom. The old dictator has been in power for nearly 30 years. The fact that the Auditor General has recently recommended to the Parliament, to liquidate MTDC, is just one small example of the scale of corruption and mismanagement in the wily old dictator’s 30-year-old regime. Another reason that we should not vote for Gayyoom is his blatant lying on TVM’s “Siyaasath” programme recently. Not only did he lie, he made statements that showed his contempt and disregard for Islamic Sharia. I would go as far as to say that anyone who votes for Gayyoom would be doing so as a challenge to Allah and His religion.

Anyone who loves this country of ours, or who loves the religion of Islam would refrain from voting for Gayyoom.

Umar Naseer and Ibrahim Ismail are two candidates who can make some very good contributions to a future government, but they cannot be described as serious challengers in the election itself. I would suggest that the eventual winner of the lection should make use of potential leaders such as Ibra and Umar in the future.

The fourth candidate, Buruma Gasim, would be a dangerous choice. Anyone who controls private television channels and radio stations and who does business in virtually all areas would have conflict of interests. If one listens to resignation speech of Thoyyib, who resigned from Gasim’s Villa TV recently, one can imagine the dangers of electing Gasim as a president of this country. Gasim is a good philanthropist who has helped a number of Maldivians in areas such as education and health. But that is no justification to elect Gasim as our president. We don’t want to build a socialist system of governance where we would have to beg Gasim for everything. If we elect Gasim, we would see the vultures that surround him, descend on the government and share the wealth of the state amongst them.
Dhivehi Observer’s Editor, Sappe, made a mistake in endorsing Gasim’s candidacy. We, the people of this country, should not make the same mistake that Sappe made. In fact, I believe that electing Gasim would be even more dangerous than even electing Gayyoom! Let’s say “No” to Gayyoom and to Gasim as well.

The remaining two candidates in this list are Anni and Dr. Hassan. Personally I think we would have had a dream team if these two were running on one ticket. Sadly though they are running as separate candidates. As I have said in the blog before, Dr. Hassan made a mistake in not selecting Dr. Waheed as his running mate. Selecting Dr. Shaheed would not have brought any new support to Dr. Hassan’s camp. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that Dr. Shaheed is a potential leader of the future, but Hassan’s candidacy would have been strengthened if he selected Dr. Waheed as his running mate.

Considering that Anni and Dr. Waheed are now running on one ticket, and considering the manifestos, and considering the relative popularity of the two candidates (Anni and Hassan), it seems to me that Anni and MDP are the only viable challengers in the contest who can beat Gayyoom and save us from this old man. Another five years for Gayyoom would mean more of the same thing (Drugs, violence, crime, corruption, disrespect for Islam, shortage of housing, discrimination against islanders, and so on).

I believe that Dr. Hassan and Dr. Shaheed (just as Ibra and Umar), have a lot to contribute to in a future government. But Anni and Dr. Waheed is the team that I’m endorsing, so that we can at last see the back of this dictator Gayyoom. Let’s unite behind MDP. Let’s make this country a nation free from corruption and inequality. Let’s say “yes” to Anni and MDP. I’m not endorsing Anni for any personal gain. But for the sake of our future and the future of our children. Let’s give MDP one chance.

I would say that Anni is a good choice. However, there are better choices. The bad side about Anni is that he has some dictatorial instincts. For this reason, I would rather endorse Dr Hassan Saeed despite his choice of a running mate who would not bring in more votes. However, Dr Shaheed is a highly capable leader well aware on foreign relations. He has the ability to defend the nation anytime. So, the choice of this running mate is also a viable one.

Thanks Bushry for giving a good analysis of the situation. Like you mentioned Sappey did a mistake by endorsing Gasim.

I hope Anni and Dr. Whaeed will work to lay a good foundation of Democracy and Human Rights in the coming 5 years, that cannot be challenged by corruption and favouritism.

Its a shame that, Mr Richy Rich Gasim has bought OUR Dhivehi Observer.

We love Dhivehi Observer, but Mr Gasim that dosent mean if you BUY Dhivehi Observer we will automatically love you.

Since Gasim bought DO we strongly resist and hate the transaction.

Since Gasim bought OD our comments are heavily censored and should meet the criteria of a Gasim Supporter.

Sappey you are lost and blinded by the loan shark Gasim. Get yourself together man.

I agree with bushry. However Anni hasn't focused much on islanders in his menifesto or his proposals r weaker compare to Dr.Hassan. A transport network which he proposed wont be economically viable. It wud be a big challenge to succeed this policy in the Maldives beacuse of the geographical dispersion v have.

    Nice posting Bushry!

As usual, its great to see such an objective analysis from you. I would agree that the only formidable opposition at the moment is MDP, and if we are to bring a meaningful change to this country we should back them this time.

As you noted, Hassan would have been a strong candidate, not that because Im from Feydhoo, Addu but I beleive he had the potential. If Hassan cared to work with MDP that would have been a formidable team sure to bring an end to this regime. Sadly, Hassan choose to decline the offer. So many of us are left with no choice but to support MDP, and MDP should succeed if we want to bring an end to Gayoom's dictatorship.

I would not agree. What about the dictating nature of Anni, the HUGE rumours about them?

Whether Anni or Maumoon comes country will be in deep shit for sure.As you have said no sane person wud vote mau MOON.Agreed.
But I wonder how many sane people would vote Anni? Did you look at what type of people his supportrs are? And have you forgotten that they are siding up.MDP and DRP in one way or the other.None of the parties attck eachother, where as they attack other parties.ISnt that a sign of Annis jealousy and insincerity. And what about the taboo or rumor that Anni is a drug addict? Can one justify that.If h wants my vote he should prove that he is a follower of Islam, and that he never used drugs.

Reasons Hassan Saeed would be a terrible choice.

    1. He dragged Dr. Shaheed and Jameel into his personal crusade. They could have been in the Goverment.

    2. Hassan lacks solid experience. He only spent few years in Government. There are even junior officers with more experience and skill.

    3. He was promoted too quickly thus he lacks the detailed working of the Goverment. So he will never understand the junior level people.

    4. He is not tested by crisis.

Dr. Hassan is an agent of Universal Enterprises. Hassan Saeed dont advertise yourself as an Adduan... you did nothing for Addu Atoll... You are not from Addu and we wont wote for you.

If he wins the election the the Koli family will rule Maldives for another 50 Year.

Under Ibrahim Nasir Koli Familiy ruled for 20 Years

Under Gayoom Koli Family Ruled for 30 years.. or May be More.

Now Koli family has blessed Dr Hssan Saeed to rob maldivian resorts.

Dr. Hassan Saeed tell us if you are elected will you collect over due balance of
Resorts lease rent from Universal Resorts. at real market value for the past years for which they have defrauded us.

  22. I am also endorsing Anni because of the same reason as you Bushry: I want the Maldivian people to unite behind MDP which so far has the hugest popular following in Male and other islands. Though Anni may not be my choice candidate, I can't afford to secondguess the immense popularity of MDP in the islands. I think voting for Anni will be the only way reformists can get votes away from Maumoon.

He is not a leader to lead a country but he is a hardcore activist. There is a huge difference between an activist and a leader to lead a nation. An activists vision will not lead us to where we are heading,

He has a lot of drug addicts around him and have no regard to our religion. He says something today and another tomorrow. He looks like a joker on the stage. The good guys in MDP has left just because of Anni and his dictatorship. I don't endorse anyone. Even if I do, does it matter.

Among the candidates, the best choice will be Dr Hassan. He has leadership and a vision to improve the life of Maldivians. Gayyoom cannot bring us to any heights good for us, may be he has good ideas for him and his family. Anni is not a leader. He is a misleading all of us, including you. If you think of this nation, I would advise you not to vote for Anni. Dr Waheed did not like MDP when he lost the elections. But for him, it is the best party now. Think, my friend, Bushry.

Hassan Saeed is a lier, he is at the same lowly level as Munnawar. Hassan Saeed wasted no time to prosecute the demonstrators during the Sep 19 commemoration incident and accused MDP members of terrorism. He even submitted the case for prosecution.

And Dr Shaheed was an adamant defender of Gayoom till the last minute.

Where were these peoples interigrity back then.

Hassan Saeed is notorious and looks like a proud arrogant person, My personal view is that he is not a team player, thats why he didnt form a political or join any political party but he rather accepted the sponsorship of robbers of state coffers like Universal and Koli family.

I hope Adduans dont support him just because he was once upon a time born in ADDU, and found his newly pasted Adduan identity to get Addu votes.

  34. My vote is for Ibra unquestionably. Why?

    Why Ibra?

    * He is straight: In words and actions. He has been steadfast in advocating the same principles and beliefs from the start.
    * He is principled: All his decisions and actions have a firm foundation in his principles and beliefs.
    * He is proactive: He is one of the key people of the reformist movement. From the time of the “minivan bahus” till now, he has been one of the key figures shaping and creating momentum for reform.
    * He is a strategic thinker: Works for long term solutions rather than the popular “stop gap” answers to problems.
    * He is steadfast: He has been there throughout the reform process, interested and interesting, untiring and a source of inspiration.
    * He is persevering: He has proven to be patient and tolerant, and has been able to see the light at the end of the tunnel even in the most adverse conditions.
    * He is a firm believer in his precepts and is not hesitant to advocate these beliefs.
    * He has no ‘baggage’: He has had no part in any activities that have been harmful to Maldivians – corruption, theft or deceit.
    * He stands by his promises to the people: He has been loyal to Maldivians and true to his word. He has stood by his campaign promises. He has proven himself in the Special Majlis and is continuing to be true to his promises in the Majlis.
    * He is perceptive: He is cognizant in all areas and well informed of the different problems faced by Maldivians. Furthermore, he has thought out these problems and has proven to be capable of finding long term solutions to these problems.
    * He is a leader: He is able to bring together people of different views and convictions, and able to get them to cooperate and to work together.
    * He is not beholden to anyone: He has no obligations to the rich and powerful; therefore he has no loyalties to any persons or parties above the common people. He has proven this time and again in his work in the Majlis.
    * He is accepted in the international community (E.U, the Commonwealth, Saarc, UNDP): He is well liked and respected and has gained the trust of the international community.
    * He is an intellectual: Being well educated, he has shown himself astute and discerning in the long time he has served the Maldivian people.
    * He is experienced: He has given long years of service in the field of education in which he did his higher studies. He has done research in this sector and has gained much experience in his work with international organisations.
    * He is well-versed in the constitution: Because of his dedication to the work on the amended constitution he is an expert on the constitutional rights of the people as well as the framework of governance as stated in the constitution.
    * Most of all Ibra has no ‘royal’ background, no monetary influence and has no backing by the community’s powers. He stands for his integrity and honesty and his fervent dream for a better Maldives for all Maldivians – a Maldives ruled by the people for the people.

Ibra is the only potential candidate who has a vision. He sees things not only from near but from far too.

Go Vote for Ibra! He is man of principle.

For too long have the Maldivian people let a few opportunists define right and wrong, best and worst. It is time for US to define what is right for US. The Presidential Palace, and all that happens within MUST be defined by the people.

    CHANGE WE CAN,

We worked hard to archive the functioning of political party system in Maldives. Hassan Saeed is trying to undermine the political party system to run the government. Dont you have any respect for the our hard work and our sacrifices.

Is not advisable to vote for a former minister who served under Maumoon.

Hassan Saeed and Shaheed were the very same people who defended and tried to legitimize the gayooms Dictatorship in the international arena. They even tried to cover up the police custodial death under Gayooms tyrannical government.

Ask Hassan Saeed about the custodial deaths in Gayooms government, he will acuse Gayoome of death now.

These people do not work for the interest of the people, if the did then the would have resigned over the police custodial deaths of inmates, and not after loosing a political debate at Dharubaaruge.

it seems that you endorsed MDP because you think they will win this election. . . is that a fair decision? Vote does not need to be given to a person or a coalition to whom you think would succeed, but it should be given to a person or a coalition whom have the potential to govern. And it does not necessarily need to be the party which can defeat Maumoon, since change is not the only thing we need. We need a good government. A corruption free, a drug free government.

I want to vote for Anni. He said he will never contest for Presidency and he contested. He said he will never run "Aailee verikan" and Sikka family is ruling MDP while his brother in law is in Elections. Under him, no one survived in MDP (Ibra, Munawwar.. you name it). Reeko Moosa has also criticized him. He even names his children in the christian way using mother's name and father's name. Anyway, since he's done good for the country, I will vote for Anni. He is the least worst. Hassan Saeed served Maumoon.

Gasim is now trying to transfer the MTDC shares he bought through proxies to his company name.

People please hold on to the shares, this is a fraud perpetrated ny Gasim and many other rich people to defraud the company.

Maldivian Stock Exchange should should stop these transfers and investigate the matter, as MTDC shares are bared from trading.

Hassan is a danger to Maldives.

Because more than an elections, this time it is also about future of Maldives democracy based on party system.

The party system is not yet solidified. So we have to be very suspicious of anyone who is undermining the party system.

Say no to Hassan as long as he is trying to take a short cut to power. He is worse than Maumoon.

We have 2 types of opposition candidates. Rich man's opposition and poor man's opposition.

Anni is the guy for poor man.

Those who want to preserve the rich and middle class are Gasim and Hassan Saeed.

    They are natural allies.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anonymous26/9/08 15:32

Maumoon also used to be a "poor" man guy. Look at him now.

Similarly, Anni used to be someone who told "I don't want Presidency". Look at him now.

So, what's the difference. The key persons who were in reform were Sandan Didi, Gogo Latheef and Anni. But now, Gogo Latheef and Sandan Didi are against Anni. This is because of this reason.

Honestly speaking, our party system is very weak. In countries where party system is practiced, a large proportion of the population belongs to a party. In Maldives only 30% belongs to a party. This 30% is spread to many parties. I am not saying that we should not support party system. My point here is that there's no one party in Maldives which can rule the country. All parties put together also is a minority. I am not supporting Hassan Saeed or Anni. I am an undecided voter.

    ********************************

    dear my goo friend,

can you pls justify me that he(Anni) is a drug adictor or he is not following religion (Islam).
Actually maumoon is not a threat for Anni, so he doesn't have to attack DRP.
DRP have nothing to talk about Anni, because they also used same propagenda as you do (drug & religion). fortunately everybody know the truth.
I advise you to think again and stop your propagander as DRP did???

    GOOD LUCK

Anni doesn't talk much about islam. when asked if he'd introduce new religions (in siyaasath prog) he didn't clearly answer. looks like he's having a deal with the conservatives, it's kinda payback time now since the conservatives have been doing their job for a while

Dr Hassan & Ibra. I'd rather choose Dr Hassan since he has gained a considerable support during the past couple of days

Hassan Saeed is not a good choice... ask his to disclose his financial sponcers, Universal Enterprises and Koli Family.

And Gasim, Just look at Gasim, the man is smelly, stinking with conflict of interest.

For him it will be heart breaking to see his money from his businesses goes into Government treasury as tax, least rent and other. He is the biggest business man in the country. he will do everything in his power to reduce tax, lease rent and other benefits to employees as it will be harder on his businesses. Or otherwise he will monopolize the businesses giving more income to him.

If coperate tax law is enforced Gasim will have to pay a big chunk of his income as tax.

He owns 10+ or so resorts, hence he's is one of the few people who has to pay a huge amount as Resort lease Rent and Bed Tax.

He employs like 2000 people, staff benefits and labor law if enforced he will have pay a big chunck of his income.

He is dominant in every industry in Maldives plus he retails consumer goods. He will be a threath to small businesses.

Both Hassan Saeed and Gasim were Naibu Zaeem's of DRP. There were expecting to be Gayooms Running mate. Something got wrong and they were rather kicked out of DRP due to internal power struggle.

And Hassan Saeed was a founding father of DRP - a political party that he helped to create that lacks democratic norms and values and is infested with cronyism, nepotism and the party itself is the epitome dictatorship in the country.

All these Guys talk about things they will do when the get to be the president. But only MDP speaks about implementing and strengthening the Democratic values in the country, the rest of them are muet on the subject.

MDP was the first to break away from the fear on media censorship.

MDP was the first to speak of electing the Atoll chiefs and Katheebs.

MDP was the first to take action on what they speak regarding demonstrations and giving power back to the people.

MDP is the only party to hold a transparent election to elect its president and presidential candidate.

I hope Irba joins the MDP coalition.

Hassan Saeeed being an educated man he is trying to fool Maldivians.

Dosent he know the meaning of Activists. For his information. Political career starts from activism for a social or a polital cause. Because he missed this phase in his short political career he is trying to discredit activists.

Nelson Mandela was an Activist in his early political career.

Barac Obama was an Activist in his early political career.

Hilary Clinton was an Activist in his early political career.

you can name numerous examples of activists who are great political leaders and presidents of countries.

Hassan Saeed do not try to fool Maldivian and dont try to undermine the Political Party System. Fact of the matter is in developed countries its only the individual candidates who win lesser support for the voters. Are you trying to cover up that fact by discrediting the party system.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous28/9/08 09:03

And the great Anni.Add his name to the top of the list.
I am sure its not the word activist thats common with Anni and these leaders.

So do these other guys also have these drug crowd behind him or are they themselves drug addicts?

Nelson Mandela and Anni.Yeah very alike. Why did not I think of that before.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Anonymous28/9/08 10:12

Maldivians can still be fooled. Maummon fooled them with religion. Hasaan Saeed knows this and he is trying to fool us in the name of democracy.

Fact is democracy will not survive without parties. The silent majority are not party members but SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS TO MEAN that they do not want parties.
    The person who commented on
26 September, 2008 15:35 must be having same thinking as Hasaan but that is a dangerous position to take.

Do you to kill or ignore democratic mechanisms because it is at an infant stage in Maldives.
For Hassan, contesting for his namesake is more important even if that destroys what we have earned so far. But that should not be surprising, as these are the same bunch who called for the Janaazaa of MDP.

Be careful of New Maldives Jews.

If Hasssan Saeed had strive for democracy in this reform movement as what Anni did, he would have been named as an activist, too!
    votE ANNI

Lololzzz reminds me of Maumoon. Why do these fools use Religion to spread their agenda.

Hey Hassan Saeed don't preach religion cause you are not a Religious scholar.

You are a dirty politician and a lawyer who studied Islamic sharia. You dirty man dont use religion as a weapon to spread your Gerihann

Though we like Hassan Saeed or not, he has gained considerable support in the past few days. His support base is on a positive trend whereas Anni's support base is declining. So, in the interest of strengthening the opposition, I decide to Vote Dr Hassan Saeed.

On the other hand, lot of women like us will vote Hassan, simply because of his looks, irrespective of his policies.

So, it is highly likely that Hassan will win. One of the reason for decline of Anni's support is because of his secret deal with DRP.

did anyone think twice why anni is siding with DRP? he is too afraid if they go to a secnd round with Dr Hassan, Anni wud be out. Meaning to say that Anni is crazy for power, if he would not win he wants maumoon to remain in power. MDP is playing dirty games....

I think Dr Shaheed answered to the querry related to Hussain Solah. The whole drama was played by Ministry of Home Affairs. They dealt directly with the Maldivian High Commission and this link covered up everything related to Hussain Solah.

What I dislike about Dr Shaheed is that he praised the government.

However, taking into consideration of all the past activities of all the candidates, I cannot conclude that Hassan Saeed is the perfect candidate. Anyway, I still feel that among all the candidates, Hassan Saeed is the best.

I met a friend in Colombo who worked in Ellaidhoo resort bar. He said he used to grab Anni from the bar every night while he Anni was drunk. I think a presidential candidate should be decent.
