Collectively (as a nation) we all stand to lose a lot if we give Gayyoom a seventh chance!

Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom – a seventy year old man whose real age is probably over eighty! A dictator who has ruled with an iron-fist for the large part of the past 30 years. Now he is running for a seventh five-year term. He’s directly or indirectly responsible for all the social and economic ills that this fragile country is facing. Drug abuse and rising crime and widespread corruption and many other social ills! Problems arising from a shortage of proper housing and disrespect for cultural and religious norms. In short, we are a nation in crisis. His legacy is drugs and lies. Yet, he has come up with a manifesto that promises tackling drug abuse and building thousands of housing units. It would have been comical if it weren’t so tragic. Listening to this man asking us to give him a seventh term – so that he can solve our problems – one is reminded of a man asking Allah to send him back to earth so that he will pray and do good deeds and stay away from sins!

Maumoon broke our spines and enslaved us. He is a liar who pretends to be an Islamic scholar when in reality he has very little respect for Prophet Muhammad’s ways. Even if Gayyoom were the last man on earth, we shouldn’t vote for him to be our leader. Personally I would prefer even a non-Muslim to lead me than let Gayyoom lead. I know many non-Muslims who are more sincere and more ethical than Gayyoom. Just because the old man studied from Azhar doesn’t mean that he is a saint. Just because the old man speaks Arabic language that doesn’t mean that he follows the teachings of the Holy Koran.

One look at his wife and two daughters, and one can see that he doesn’t give proper guidance to his family as per the Islamic teachings. Gayyoom does not believe that it is compulsory for women to wear the veil. That’s why his wife and two daughters are walking (or rather driving) our streets being naked! He mocks those who wear the veil and mocks those men who grow their beards. May Allah save us from this selfish, evil and conniving old man!

So this is Gayyoom’s ‘Doomsday’! He is standing in front of us – the people of Maldives. He is asking us to keep him in power for 35 years. He is a liar and we should see through the fabricated facade that the old man has built to mislead us.

It’s time that we say no to Gayyoom and his parasitic family and his cronies. By saying “no” to Gayyoom we will not only be saying “No” to a selfish dictator who has killed our dreams, but we will also be saying “no” to people such as Gayyoom’s brother Abdullah Hameed, Umar Zahir, Summer Blue Ibrahim Manik, Abbas Ibrahim and the rest.

In saying “No” to Gayyoom we have to say “Yes” to one of the contenders for presidency. Of the many candidates there are only three candidates who have a credible chance of mounting a serious challenge – namely Dr. Hassan Saeed and Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) and Gasim Ibrahim. Judging from the manifestos and other relevant indicators, I have to say that Dr. Hassan and his running mate (Dr. Shaheed) is a team that we can back successfully. The fact that, of these three candidates, Gayyoom apparently hates Dr. Hassan the most, goes to show that Dr. Hassan is the candidate who can dislodge Gayyoom and bring us a fair and democratic government. Personally I have nothing to gain even if Hassan Saeed wins, but collectively (as a nation) we all stand to lose a lot if we give Gayyoom a seventh chance!

    AGREE WITH THE ABOVE COMMENT.

THE LAST THING MALDIVES NEEDS IS A DIVIDED OPPOSITION. THAT IS WORSE THAN CANCER.

IF THIS IS A GENUINE EFFORT, DR. HASSAN WOULD JOIN A BIGGER FORCE.

DIVIDED EVERYONE LOOSES AND THAT INCLUDES DR. HASSAN.

HOPE SOME ONE SPEAK ABOUT IT.

I feel that Hassan Saeed is a hypocrite. he took advantage of his power and position in is term as the attorney general to promote his personal agenda. by no means am i voting to him. The only candidate who is free from such and such blemishes is Anni.

  3. The simile of "a man asking Allah to send him back to earth so that he will pray and do good deeds and stay away from sins," is thought provoking. Well written article.

I could not watch the SIYAASATH show completely as it came pretty late last night.I heard a question about Burugaa, what was Maumoon's answer? Does any one know? He is a religous scholar, so just curious to know what he said.!

and I heard something like its not Laazim to follow dheenuge hikumai.Did he really saying that or was I just drifting off to sleep, so I imagined it?

and what was that about saying in all his promises he said Insha Allah.
He is a religous scholar so he must be knowing how to use it in the appropriate manner, the pronunciation and everything.

And he was so busy running the nation and guiding the youth, he had no time to train a GREAT leader like him.Thats why he is indirectly telling he is still the one for us.

If he gets elected this time, and leaves job after 5 years, may be Maldivians has to find a president from another country.sob sob

Even if Hassan Saeed's hypocrisy, corruption and ruthlessness is made evident by the media sources you keep on singing his praise. Either you must be under his spell real bad or you love playing with fire. (the prior , I think applies for some)Of course his agenda is based on his selfishness; to get back at Maumoon for ruining his life as Ministers of the Cabinet. Just can't see why some people who claim to know so much about the guy can be so clueless.

Good article. Bushry your doing a great work.

I think we should think bold and cast our vote, this will be the time which we can make a difference of success or failure for the future of Maldives.

Today the entire country is crying to see a new change from the president to the developments. So we should be very clear to say "NO" to Gayyom. We cant afford any more years to scarify by letting Gayyom to run this country for another decade. We should not cheat ourselves. We should not sell our rights (votes). We should be sincere to ourselves.

As Bushry said, Dr.Hassan Saeed is the best candidate, there is no doubt. He is the best and we should make our decision based on many factors. The only problem i tend to see regarding Dr.Hassan Saeed is that he might not have that much support, this is not because he will not get support, this is because the people think in a different way, we should change our thinking pattern.

There is a cultural attitude in our society that if one person says something which can be a negative publicity for the other person and that rumor goes from one person to the other making the poor peoples mind to believe that the rumor is true and people has to accept it. Example now some people who are oppositions of Dr.Hassan Saeed, they r spreading that "Dr.Saeed didnt have that much support to win this election so we have to support to some one who is more likely to win" the objective of these guys is to convince poor people that they should divert their support to some other candidate this is ridiculous. We should be aware of these kind of negative publicity.

I think those who support Dr.Hassan Saeed should remain as his supporters and those who spread these dirty tactics should be known to every one of us, so that we can make a good and firm decisions.

I think the supporters of Dr.Hassan Saeed should stand and start the campaign. If all the people keep their support to Dr.Hassan Saeed and with more people who is having second thought to caste their vote to Gasim or Ibra or Anni, although the supporters fully believe that the right and best candidate is Dr.Hassan Saeed, but due to thinking Dr.Saeed's support base is less.

I think all and those who is has second thinking should clearly look into the movement and should say Dr.Hassan Saeed has lots of support and when we all are together he can be a winner and Gayyom will be the loser.

Lets think bold, October 8th is the day, lets make a true change in this country, lets stand by Dr.Hassan Saeed.

I wonder why some people are blaming Dr.Hassan for praising Maumoon when he was AG.

What would a lamb do when he finds a wolf in sheeps clothing? How can the sheep escape unharmed without a little bit of praising for the wolf?

Well! I have some personal experience of Dr.Hassan trying to spend from his own pocket to a drug addict! This is not a joke.

As far as i can see I am very much convinced that he accepted Maumoon's offer for AG, because Saeed genuinely wanted to make things better for all the Maldivians. If he was unsincere, why should he present important bills to the Majlis, passing and adopting of which will only benefit the common man?

If Saeed did not resign from the government as AG, we would not have seen the wave of resignations that followed. Earlier it was the culture of Maumoon's ministers to keep prostrating to him even if he slays you bit by bit, tolerating all the injustices and closing their eyes infront of Maumoon even if he commits day-light-robbery, splashing curry to whatever rice Maumoon cooked legally or illegally.

For me Hassan is an unblemished peal in Maldivian politics.

So far I have not seen any convincing excuses for not voting for Hassan and Shaheed. Yes, not to mention the clumsy tit for tat stones being thrown by Adam Zahir, claims which I believe are directed towards Hassan out of desperation and confusion.

So you know to whom my vote goes.

i strongly agree with DON KEYOTHI statement. Dr Hassan Saeed will be same as Maumoon. He only wants to bring the power to Addu and get the name of President. Its not a problem if power goes to Addu, no bother which island. saeed has no interest at all for maldivians. Please Allah give us a kind , honest and loving president to our country. Ameen
