Anni, Dr. Hassan and Gasim to form an alliance to beat Gayyoom!

A second round of voting is now almost a certainty. In the second round, all reformists, even some of the ex-MDP members who, for various reasons, may hate Anni too need to think deeply and put country first. If you vote for Gayyoom in the second round because you hate Anni, then you are effectively condemning yourself to slavery for the next five years.

Despite all the shortcomings and possible vote rigging, one positive that will hopefully come out of this "Circus" called the “election” is that it could go for a second round. If, as expected, it goes for a second round, it is intrinsic that MDP’s candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni), Dr. Hassan Saeed, Republican Party’s candidate Gasim Ibrahim and IDP’s candidate Umar Naseer come to a common platform and form an alliance to try and topple the dictator through the ballot box! Current indications make it quite clear that Gayyoom and Anni will go to the second round as the top two candidates.

It is not a time to find petty differences. True leaders are those who overcome differences for the good of the nation. I deliberately (but sadly) omitted Ibra's name from the above list. It is obvious for all to see; the divisive role that Ibra played. Let's hope that we learn from this and find a compromise that can bring Anni, Saeed, Gasim and Umar together, so that we can finally see the back of dictator Gayyoom.

There are unconfirmed reports that Dr. Saeed and Gasim Ibrahim’s representatives are meeting with representatives of Anni. If Anni, Dr. Saeed and Gasim cannot form an alliance it would be nearly impossible to beat Gayyoom in the second round of voting. There are unconfirmed reports that DRP’s candidate Gayyoom, who is expected to win this first round, is already preparing for the second round and that Gayyoom is trying to meet Dr. Hassan and Gasim.

Even if Gayyoom can somehow arm-twist Gasim into joining a DRP alliance, it is hard to see Gasim’s alliance member, Adhaalath Party, going along with Gasim to join DRP. After all the attacks from DRP to Dr. Saeed in the campaign leading to the election, it is hard to see Dr. Saeed joining a DRP alliance in the second round. But in politics one can never be 100 percent sure of anything. In politics one can find many strange bedfellows. Hence it is intrinsic that these three leaders (Anni, Dr. Saeed and Gasim) overcome any possible differences and form an alliance that can beat dictator Gayyoom in the second round. All three leaders have to compromise!

Even some of the ex-MDP members who, for various reasons, may hate Anni too need to think deeply and bring country first. If you vote for Gayyoom in the second round because you hate Anni, then you are effectively condemning yourself to slavery for the next five years. I’m not saying that Anni is perfect. Far from it. But, don’t listen to bitter failures that have a personal vendetta with Anni. Listen to leaders of the future such as Dr. Saeed, Anni, Gasim and Umar.

Let’s join hands to defeat Gayyoom. This is a once in a lifetime chance. A chance that we could not afford to waste.

you see, i think you are more aware than us regarding what a nasty dictator he is. dictators cannot be throuwn out that easily. those things happen in democracies where we have leaders who have shame and love for people and nation.

it will take more than the ballot box to bring down a nasty dictotor for live like maumoon as you have indicated.

we need a revolution and non stop non voilent muzaahir a for a week.

where do you find that kind of democracy brother? in UK? 60% of the people were against going into Irag...Bloody dictator Tony Blair went against that. The leader of the so father of democracy US, george bush lied to the people and the whole world and the dictator played his own game..
The same democracy went against the popular vote (People's vote) which Al Gore won and put the dictator in power. Tell me its the system that put him power...where is the peoples voice?
How many people has been tortured, killed in US jails? Abu Guraib. they are not violation of human rights? cant you smell dictatorship there? tell me its not there leaders, its the men in black who did it.

Anni and opposition had their chances. They blew it by stupid infighting.

Its almost certain Maumoon will win even if by going alone.

Next round would be more simpler for Maumoon as he would be competing with an unruly and unorganized crowd.

I am not going to waste my vote on a hopeless opposition anymore.

Well done Maumoon. Go on and beat em all together.

I have no personal hate against Anni, nor do i have a personal grudge against Gayoom.
What is relevant is their policies and which is the lesser of two evils.

The probability of changing the face of the president simply because he has been around long enough should be secondary. Gayoom is predictable, anni is untested and if his parties policies are anything to go by, there is little to say we would not be facing a slave-master....

Little will in fact change with change in government, while the system which has corruption and despotism inbuilt persists. I do not believe this electorate is competent enough to elect a competent government...

If MDP comes to power there will also be corruption and favoritism, this is unavoidable. Therefore such arguments are irrelevant.

The question is how much will the people gain by change of government other than a superficial change in the hand of power.

  8. based on the comments given to this blog post, i would have to say that sadly, Maldivians still do not have a comprehensive grasp on how difficult it would be to actually topple someone who has had absolute power in his hands for 30 years. I would say its a victory for the opposition movement, split up though they may be.. 60% of those who have voted wants a new government.
In Sha Allah, the day will come when Maumoon will have no choice, but to give the reins to the opposition movement, which will hopefully bring with it, betterment to our country. Amen!

We are tlking about a DICTATOR here. Not beating a president who served a 5 year or 10 year term.

A dictator, yes a DICTATOR, will do anything to stay in power.Play with peoples emotions, way of thinking, from that to everything, fool people etc.

Maldivians, please wake up.This is the time to unite and defeat Maumoon, there will come a chance to differ, if needed. But its not now. Please join hands to beat a DICTATOR of 30 years. If we dont defat him now, its hard to imagine what his gadha fasaharu will be for rayyithun.More drugs? More salvery? More over crowding? Please think.

    Hi anonymous (17:36;1st),

You didn't waste your vote. You went out and voted for the candidate you chose. He may not have won, but you have done your part in showing your support to them. The numbers are there to see (for the record).

Next time also, go out and vote for whom you believe in. It doesn't matter whether he wins or not - that the country will decide after the count. Your candidate may win or lose, and there may not be much indication what will happen in the end.

Good supporters share the loss. They won't bail out the moment things appear bad.

    Personally I am indifferent.

Neither the MDP or Maumoon & co. should be allowed into government....

No significant improvement in the plight of the average man will come about in the long run. The benefits in either case will be reaped by the few, the new or the old elite.

I also think the opposition is the vocal minority that underestimates the silent majority. The Maldives is not just Maale, but also those very many islands which till subsist on a 1978 mentality & way of life....it is they who gave the majority mandate to Maumoon. It is them, that we have forgotten and which maumoon has been slowly inbreeding far from the (pseudo) glitter and glamour of the capital. For them, to this day even, maumoon is still all they have ever known..

Corruption, favoritism and neglect of average working class maldivians will in all probability continue even in an MDP led government. It's massive privatization and pro-economic-globalization policies have been the bane of third world existence, and this is what they are offering us as well. Little will change with a change i government except the faces of those holding office...

I do not believe this electorate is competent enough to elect a competent government...

A national unity government was in fact the best bet for this country, which ensure plurality in government- that very sacred ideal of a democracy.

For those of you who keep having wet dreams about Singapore, it is by all accounts a dictatorship.
So which is that we are seeking here- an end to dictatorship? a "change"? economic prosperity?...or do we seek to oust a "dictator" because he has failed to deliver that 'prosperity'? In which case then democracy is not the issue here eh...

Neither the MDP or Maumoon & co. should be allowed into government....either way, we will lose.

Of course it's the vote that counts- anybody who is eligible is allowed to exercise this right. So if they vote to keep maumoon or elect anni because the former is a "dictator" (nevermind that anni would prob be no better), then it must be made to be so....

The people decide, yes....but then I have very little faith in people

Unite All opposition...... Gasim Anni, Hassan unite to defeat a dictator.

Fresh elections can be held after defeating the Gayoom. Or a coalition Government can rule for the 5 years

United we win, when divided Gayoom wins.

The people await a word from Ibra, Umar and (most importantly) Gasim. Dr. Hassan has taken the side of the people. Hassan received plenty of criticism from MDP during the campaigning for the first round, but Hassan has shown that he is a leader who can rise above petty differences in order to save the country. Ibra, Umar and Gasim needs to show whose side they are on. Are they with the Maldivian people or are they with the dictator.

According to a reliable source, Gayyoom's campaigne team has comeup with a novel way to get support for the second round of voting. Gayyoom's team are now spreading the false and stage-managed rumour that he is going to resign. This is a trick to attract sympathy vote. beware of the "wolf" people! Don't fall into the trap and give a sympathy-vote for Gayyoom.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's true that Gayyoom's campaign team are working on three fronts. One is to attract "sympathy votes'. The second way is to exploit the differences between Anni and some ex-MDP members who were disillusioned with Anni. The third is to frighten Gasim into joining Gayyoom.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Even if Gasim is scared to join the MDP-Iththihaadh-Dr.Hassan alliance, Adhaalath Party should overlook the differences and join MDP-alliance to oust Gayyoom. If MDP-QaumeeIththihaadh-HassanSaeed-Adhaalath form an alliance it will be a formidable one. Don't think negatively. We can do it. Gayyoom is putting a brave front. Deep down he is scared of losing. Let's go this final hurdle to achieve victory in this long marathon we started years ago.

  30. the difference between anni and ibra is anni worked in the streets and ibra worked in the parliment. ibra needs anni's pressure and muzaharaa tactics to pass good laws and anni needs ibra to topple a dictator peacfully without any bloodshed.

i respect ibra for standing firm on what he beleive. We need ibra to fight the next battle and beyond.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ANNI,SAEED, BURUMA together secured almost 100000 votes, Maumoon alone 72000. Maumoon's 72000 voters will stay loyal to him, Anni's 44000 voters will stay loyal to him, BUT how many of the Saeed's and Gasim's loyalists will go and vote for someone they dont beleive in? Just because their candidate failed they will rush to vote ANNI?

What Im trying to say here is no mattter all oppositions join force it will be tough to beat Maumoon, in terms of logic and arithmetic Maumoon still has the upper hand.

Time is short for opposition to come out and convince voters that they all are united, few days back they told the voters they all had different agendas, they all accused each other, they all called names, they all so bittterly divided, tomorrow comes out and tell the people we are ONE?

Look at the Presidential Palace Audit Report, thieves like Atoll Ministry Nisreen are taking public money with the help of Gayoom.

Gayoom spend MRf26 million on Hill & Knowlton a PR firm rather than helping the Tsunami Refuges.

  37. IT'S TIME FOR DR.MUNAVVAR TO SHOW THAT HE ISN'T A SELFISH PERSON WHO PUTS PERSONAL ISSUES BEFORE THE ISSUES OF THE NATION. HE MAY HAVE CAUSE TO BE UPSET WITH ANNI. But if Dr. Munavvar wants to be seen as a leader of the future he has to come forward and tell the people (as Dr. Hassan did) that, at least for this election, he is willing to back and support the reformist candidate (Anni), just to oust Gayyom. If Munavvar doesn't do that, no Maldivian should forgive him. Staying silent is also just the same as taking dictator Gayyoom's side. Come on Doc, ther's still time to show that you care. Think of your promise to us that you will not allow Gayyoom to take part in (leave alone win) this election. Now that Gayyoom is taking part in it, at least help us defeat him.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Brothers and sister educate the people why not to vote for Gayoom. Tell them about the crimes he committed and the lies he told, and the moneys he stole from Palace budget.

If we give him 5 more years we will see the new Dictator Farish Gayoom and his thugs grab our money & state treasury.

Dirty Gayoom look what he does to the Businessmen, he is extorting them for election funding and hijacking them to support him.

Atoll chiefs and katheebs, vote for change so that you children and their children can have a bright future, education, health care and housing. Tell people not to vote for Gayoom.

    United Opposition.
