20 October 2008

We have to be prepared for a scenario in which Gayyoom “wins” the election on 28th October!

At a press briefing today, the CEO of MIFCO, Adil Saleem, endorsed MDP candidate, Mohamed Nasheed, for the upcoming election. This was a pleasantly surprising announcement by Saleem. While congratulating Adil Saleem for standing up against this dictatorial regime, I call upon the Managing Directors and chairmen of other parastatal companies such as MTCC, Island Aviations, etc. to put country first and take the side of the reformists. We should not sell our souls and our country for an old man and his ambitious half-brother.

No dictatorship has ever been voted out of office through a free and fair election. This is an ominous statistic. I believe that we are not about to see history been set through the ballot box in this small country. Gayyoom and his two brothers (Hameed and Yamin), and Gayyoom’s two sons (Farish and Gassan) and his two daughters (Dhunya and Yumna) and Gayyoom’s influential wife (Nasreena) and Nasreena’s brothers (Abbas and Ilyas) and this whole extended family have too much to lose. Look at the expensive palace being built at Endherimage by Nasreena. Look at the businesses being setup and run by members of Kaamineege Family and Endherimage family. Will they give up all that and just migrate abroad?

Will Nasreena be willing to give up Theemuge Palace and Aarah and the luxury yachts and the weekend trips to Singapore where she can shop with unlimited-platinum-credit cards? Can you ever imagine Hameed and Yamin and Gayyoom and Nasreena and their families living amidst us while someone other than Gayyoom rules this country? They will not leave even a single stone unturned just to stop that from happening.

All this shows that this is a do or die situation for the Endheri and Kaaminee clans! For these two clans there are two options in front of them. First option is that they will win the election by hook or by crook. The second option is that they will stamp out any win for the reformists by the use of brutal force. The new law of assembly currently being debated at the Parliament would be passed before the election and that law will be used as an excuse to use brutal force to suppress any protests that may result from the reformist camps when Gayyoom “wins”!

We all patted ourselves on our backs and congratulated ourselves for having a very “peaceful” and “civilized” first round of voting on 08th October. As I have said in a previous post in this blog, we are currently experiencing the calm before the storm. The confusion at the Corona Printers last night and the attack on the Adhaalth Party member and the appointment of Fazeel Najeeb as the Governor of MMA and the leaked agreement between Yamin and Gayyoom all point to one thing! The regime will not give up power that easily. In fact they will have a death-grip on it as a drowning man will hold onto even a straw.

We all want change. We are all impatient for that change. But don’t be fooled by overconfidence. Don’t think that we can dislodge Gayyoom through the ballot box on 28th October. Don’t get me wrong. I believe that if a free and fair election is held in this country Gayyoom will lose by a huge margin. But the point is that the election that will be held on 28th October will not be a free and fair election. MDP Vice President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki has also said this quite categorically. So, the chances are high that by hook or by crook Gayyoom and Yamin will make sure that we lose and they win.

The leaders of the MDP-Iththihaadh and all reformists should be prepared for this scenario. Don’t be fooled by over-confidence. Believe that this is the calm before the storm. Understand the fact that no dictatorship can be voted out of office through an election. We have hard times ahead of us! We need all the help we can get. Endorsements and support from potential leaders such as Adil Saleem of MIFCO should be sought and encouraged. The country is tilting at the mouth of an erupting volcano.

As I have said before, the leaders of the MDP-Iththihaadh and all reformists should be prepared for this scenario. What will we do if Gayyoom and Yamin steal this election from our hands in broad daylight? Will we complain to the Elections Commission which is likely to rule in Gayyoom’s favour? Will we complain to the Supreme Court which too is likely to rule in Gayyoom’s favour? Will we complain to the international community which can do very little to stop Gayyoom! If we don’t help ourselves then no one else can help us!

  2. I agree with this post whole heartedly. Maumoon and his gang are more likely to win, not by majority but through bribery, threats and vote rigging. they have a history of such tactics, and those people who are so blind to maumoons faults know that the old man will eventually win, and these supporters of maumoon want to be on the winning side. It saddens and angers me to no end, to see such educated people's morality gone astray by Maumoon's obvious propaganda against the poor people of Maldives.

  10. From Bushree's previous posts:

"..The fourth candidate, Buruma Gasim, would be a dangerous choice. Anyone who controls private television channels and radio stations and who does business in virtually all areas would have conflict of interests. If one listens to resignation speech of Thoyyib, who resigned from Gasim’s Villa TV recently, one can imagine the dangers of electing Gasim as a president of this country. Gasim is a good philanthropist who has helped a number of Maldivians in areas such as education and health. But that is no justification to elect Gasim as our president. We don’t want to build a socialist system of governance where we would have to beg Gasim for everything. If we elect Gasim, we would see the vultures that surround him, descend on the government and share the wealth of the state amongst them.
Dhivehi Observer’s Editor, Sappe, made a mistake in endorsing Gasim’s candidacy. We, the people of this country, should not make the same mistake that Sappe made. In fact, I believe that electing Gasim would be even more dangerous than even electing Gayyoom!..."

We need more votes caz the more votes we get Golhaabo will mess up the registered number of votes and expose his daylight robbery, stealing our votes by rigging it.

  13. The worst thing that the narcissist and egoist Maumoon can suffer psychologically is if he has to live like a common man on the street. As Bushry pointed out, do you think Maumoon will LET that happen? No fecking way!

  14. if we all (supporters of CHANGE) focus & direct our effort with prayers, we can accomplish our Vision - "Watan Edhey Gothah" on 28th Oct.
Each one become active in inspiring & guiding towards the right path to atleast 3 to 5 new voters.
Don't worry, Almighty Allah will take care of our BIG issue, "free & fair election". Together we can do it !

  15. To dear "Anonymous" who reproduces a phrase from my previous post - which was critical of Gasim - I have to say that you will not only find criticisms of Gasim but criticisms of Anni and Hassan and Adhaalath as well in my previous blogs. We are not hero-worshippers like the DRP supporters who hero-worship Gayyyoom. We are free-thinking, meocratic youth of this country who can criticise Anni or Dr.Hassan or Adhaalath or Gasim or whoever and still say something good about them when they deserve praise. You have to remember that we are not endorsing gasim as president but we are all united for one purpose now - to get rid of the dictator. Situations can change and perspectives can change but I can guranatee one thing Insha Allah; I will never endorse Gayyoom for any post, leave alone the presidency.

  16. Yep Bushry... we are not hero worshipers. I support MDP, but any day if MDP sidelines it self from Democracy i would be supporting to another political party.

    ReplyDelete
  17. You are hero worshippers of a special kind.Meaning you cant stick to one particular hero..So are you ready for a situation where Qasim shares 30 percent?

Ofcourse we know you well enough.Did you not swear to write to some website or a magazine until Qayoom falls?

  18. Bushree wrote:
"..Situations can change and perspectives can change.."

You have accused Qasim of being the biggest riba taker.Has that situation changed now?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Whats the difference between you and hero worshippers in DRP.DRP supports Qayoom for no reason other than that he is Qayoom. And what about your hero worshipping ?

You support someone based on his stance towards maumoonu.

So maumoonu(in one way or another) is your criteria to determine right and wrong

    ReplyDelete
  20. Maumoon is worseoff, riba taker or not.So it does not matter, now the goal is getting rid of an old dictator.

POlitics is like that. But in the end oppossition is together, insha Allah.
    May the truth get victory.

  21. Maumoon keeps saying, I am the one, I am the one, I am the one.

Isnt this an insult to a nation!

  24. Adil has sack frm his job today, is this what ur beloved new constitution assured as so calld democracy.
MTCC MD Athif Shukoor is backing Maumoon as his campaign mananegr. STO MD Ahmed is backing Maumoon by givn STO's wealth to Gayyoom and Yameen. So Y MIFCO MD cant raise his voice for reform and change. No choice we must say NO TO MAUMOON, ENOUGH is ENOUGH. pls save our country from MAUMOON and his brother YAMEEN ..., think and vote for change dont loose this opportunity.

  25. Gayoom cannot win the election, He can rig the votes.

    Vote rigging is not winning.

Gayooms Haveeru Propaganda paper published an article about the voting frauds in the USA. They are trying to convincing the public that's its the norm and standard practice in winning an election.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If the said scenario arises Zaki needs to talk with international pressure groups.

If MDP wins then also Gayoom will create violence, hence Zaki needs to talk with international pressure groups like EU, UK, India, SAARC and UN groups and ambassadors.

  29. Maumoon has yet again proved to the Maldivians by firing Adhil, that he is above the law. And the funny thing is his pathetic followers who are on his leash believe that what he had done was justified and correct. However, Maumoon, his brother Yamin (The Gangster) and nephews and nieces as well as the whole clan with his mindless ministers in the cabinet have shown to the Maldives, that they are frightened of the ripple effect Adhil might cause. And the funny thing is, just a few days back Maumoon was screaming that he would not hold any personal grudge against the leaders of the opposition parties. What he has done proves that in Maldives there will never be freedom of opinion or whatever you call it. The moment he wins the election through vote rigging and such means what he will do is get rid of the opposition parties. He'll say they are against the government, so they need to be disposed of...for good. BRAVO Maumoon, for showing you are senile, revengeful, ruthless, self centred, egoistical and simply madly in love with power which you dare not 'hand over' to another Maldivian but to your family. People of Maldives, let us stand against Maumoon and vote for Anni. It's high time, we did something to change our situation and see what life will be like in Anni's promised 'ane dhivehi-rajje'.

  34. Apart from Italy, few countries see porn stars entering politics. But even in Italy, its only female stars like Milly D'Abbraccio who has done it. Not male studs.

Adil Saleem is also a historic first for Maldives democratic reform.

He should promise to release a new film as a vote winner.

  35. and while adil saleem was an avid drp supporter he was an angel, he was given a top job in the state; but now that he has joined hands with the mdp he's become a pornstar overnight. some people's thinking, i must say reflect golhaboa's half baked theories and baseless melodrama.
adhil saleem, what you do behind closed doors with your wife is of no concern to the public , except for those small percentage who thinks the sun shines out of maumoon's ass. what is of importance is your decision to support what the mdp alliance is trying promote. in my opinion you are a true star.
