Insha Allah this Comedy Circus called “the election” will go for a second round!

As an Adduan who now resides at Male, I went to the Galolhu Stadium, where the Hithadhoo voting booth is held. Voting started with a delay from the announced time.

The first thing that struck me was that most of the Observers from the Commonwealth were huddled at booth number S-01 at the stadium. I wonder how the Commonwealth can ‘observe” the election nationwide if most of them reside in Male and are huddled near just one voting booth.

After casting my vote I came home, soaked in rain. The first thing I noticed after coming home was that the so-called “indelible” mark that was put on the left thumb had been washed by the rain. This mark was supposed to me from a permanent ink that would last for days. This is the same ink that had been guaranteed by the recently established, so-called “independent” Elections Commission. What a joke! This is either utter incompetence or unashamed corruption!

As has been well documented by now, there are innumerable problems in the Voter Registry compiled by the Elections Commission. There are also many problems at the numbers of ballot papers sent to various booths. There are also documented cases of some people’s names being repeated in more than one voting booth. The sheer volume of problems in the voting process has made it very difficult for the authorities to establish any credibility in the final outcome of this election.

After vociferous protests from the public, in front of the Elections Office (at Nasandhura Palace Hotel), the Commission is now trying to appease the people by applying cosmetic makeover to cover their incompetence and shortcomings. With the plethora of problems in the whole voting process, this election cannot be called a free and fair election. It is full of possible corruption and fraudulence and incompetence. It is impossible to accept that this is a free and fair election! It is clear that this is an election designed to mislead. It is setup with a predesigned agenda. It is not a process held to find the voice of the people.

Despite all this, one positive that will hopefully come out of this "Circus" is that it could go for a second round of voting. If, as expected, it goes for a second round, it is intrinsic that Anni, Saeed, Gasim and Umar Naseer come to a common platform, for some sort of alliance and try to topple the dictator through the ballot box! It is not a time to find petty differences. True leaders are those who overcome differences for the good of the nation. I deliberately (but sadly) omitted Ibra's name from the above list. It is obvious for all to see; the divisive role that Ibra played. Let's hope that we learn from this and find a compromise that can bring Anni, Saeed, Gasim and Umar together, so that we can finally see the back of dictator Gayyoom.

voting starts on 9 and closes at 8 night. that 660 minutes. assuming that it will take a minute for one person one box can only take 660 votes. from the addu voter registry even child of grade five can do this calculation and say how many boxes will be needed for each island.

i dont thinks its incompetence. its deliberate effort by maumoon and his thugs to rigg vote by denying the right vote under technical difficulties.

Have you noticed that from the outer islands that the voter turnout was almost 100%

From TVM results when they counted 28000 votes only 2 person did not turn out to vote. This is almost impossible.

I think extra ballot papers were put in to the box for the absentees.

If it goes to a second round. MDP should tell the island people of the material goods they will give to the islanders.

Most of the voters are ignorant and uneducated. They wont know the difference about their rights and freedom. Tell them we will give money and build castles in the air. then only they will vote, Gayoom has trained them this way for 30 years.

And i think the election of Atoll chiefs and Katheebs should be done before the presidential election. Because the will influence the vote in favor of Gayoom in every way they can.

Umar Naseer got more votes than Ibura. Just look at the mentality and education level of the voters.

I guess MDP should reorganize the campaign strategy.

They should reach out to the smaller islands.

Give the happy news about the Material benefits they will receive.

Tell the Katheebs and Atoll chiefs that they have the job guarantee and the pay package.

They should reach out to the poor and desperate people, who are not aware of the benefits of these changes.

The should reach out and get the message to the old folks.

Once again they should concentrate more on Central Maldives (medhu Raajethere)

The outer atolls are the key to winning this election, so MDP should concentrate 99% on the outer atoll community.

i think the ballot papers should have serial numbers.

Any out of order serial number in a ballot box will indicate vote rigging and should nullify the result of that particular ballot box and we could re vote of that voting station.

Cant they bring an electronic voting system???????????

Dudes this is why we voted for a Parliamentary system.

If we had a parliamentary system now Gayoom would be reduced to fit his shoe size.

Agree to the facts. MDP seemed to be the biggest enemy of Maumoon, but in the end there seemed no one more dearer than Maumoon. What would call this if you express an unbiased view.

Is MDP without an agenda or are they wholly dedicated to the cause of the Maldivians. To me the evidence shows otherwise.

    Gayoom divided the opposition.

What Gayoom doing is DIVIDE AND RULE

When all the MPs left MDP, MDP was doomed it barely survived because of its true members and the right choice made by Anni in selecting the running mate.

Anni asked Gasim to be MDP's presidential candidate but he said no.

Anni asked Hassan to be MDP coalitions presidential candidate but he also said no.

I wonder why they said no, if they said yes then all MDP bembers would either vote for Gasim or Hassan. I guess instead of geting the support of MDP members they had another Agenda, To Divide the opposition vote.

Gayoom gets the most votes from the outer Islands but he treats them like shit. In the islands people are drinking and taking showers from ground water that is mixed with sewerage water.

How stupid are the people who vote for Gayoom.

From the 200 islands or so Only Male' has a sewerage system. So the rest of the country is treated like slaves and made to use sewerage water for their daily use.

Pls opposition people tell you family members in the outer islands not to vote for Gayoom in the second round. Meet them, call them and tell not to vote for Gayoom.

i heard qasim there to divide opposition and get some of annis vote and maumoon directly ordered to him to run.

otherwise a lame duck like qasim who almost muruthaduvi in his letter to qayoom when in jail, how can he run on his own. maumoon must have his black file.

we have to admit that maumoon is still smarter and knows dhivehi than all the opposition combined.

the only person who has a feel of the peopls puls and know how to win elections is anni.

I am disappointing in MDP because my vote for them was wasted. They did not have the majority that they promised. So much for Aneh Dhivehi Raajje.

I voted against Maumoon. I did that hoping that MDP did have enough of a majority to bring stability to the country.

Now it is clear that they cannot bring political stability with such a narrow margin.

So in the second round I am definitely voting for Maumoon - for stability and to avoid chaos.

Sorry Anni. You got your chance.

Finally the 'Black File' on Qasim would be used to coerce him into an Alliance with DRP?

But will he be Finance Minister again?

The people of Maldives has spoken, whether we like it or not, if we beleive in democracy we have to agree that Maumoon is still the person who majority trust, more than 50000 people out of the 200000 voted for him.

I wanted a changed, I beleived in what Anni and MDP said, but they decieved us, they clearly did not have the majority.

Anni, you are not fit to be our president, I still beleive that you will be a wonderful activist but NOT the President of Maldives.

Maumoon will have my vote in the next round.

In the second around we should not vote Mohamed Nasheed (Anni). instead we shoudl vote for Maumoon.

But if Qasim and Maumoon running the second round then people should vote for Qasim.

    2) I just couldn't doze off with all that nail biting thrill of a fight between Umar Naseer, Ibra and 'baathil'! They're not yet done counting all the votes.. But this 'Baathil' seems to be kicking both their asses!

Darn whats wrong with the people in the atolls.

People tell your relatives in the islands not to vote for Gayoom.

  24. Anonymous9/10/08 14:35

Gayoom is going to supreme court, telling that there is a mistake in translating the constitution.

He is filing a case that the majority winner of the votes get to be the president not necessarily the 51% as stated in the constitution.

Grrrrrrrrrr Golhaabo. Now the opposition will be united and kick your butt out.

Anni is more evil than Maumoon, thats for sure. People still trust Maumoon, and if those people do not vote for Anni than those people are ignorant fools. Is this democracy. Anni claimed he had the majority of Maldives and decieved the innocent public. But now its clear Maumoon is the man with dignity in this country. On next round i will vote for Maumoon
