Let’s have more protests against Gayyoom and his cronies!

“We want justice, not revenge,” was the theme as a relatively small but sizeable crowd gathered at the Artificial Beach Friday afternoon to call the government of Mohamed Nasheed to bring former dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom to justice.

It was a peaceful protest of about 200 people. Most were holding placards calling for Gayyoom and his cronies to be brought to justice for the crimes that - the protesters allege - were committed during Gayyoom’s three-decade-long rule. Protesters expressed their dissatisfaction of President Nasheed for his decision to treat the former leader with “dignity and respect”! Referring to the President's statement to exercise calm and humility in time of victory, they were chanting that they have waited enough in humility and that they cannot do so any longer.

Some of the striking statements in the placards held by the protesters - or some of their demands - are summarized below:

1. Reopen the case where Hussain Solah was “murdered” in police custody.

2. Make public the entire report compiled by a committee regarding Evan Naseem’s murder in police custody (in Maafushi Jail).

3. Bring Gayyoom (as head of police at the time) and Adam Zahir (Commissioner of Police at the time) to court regarding the murder of Hussain Solah and Evan Naseem in police custody.

4. Investigate the alleged corruption at the President’s Office during Gayyoom’s rule (which is highlighted in the Auditor General’s report).

5. Investigate the case highlighted by the Auditor General in the audit of the Maldives Customs, wherein the Gayyoom’s running mate and former minister (under Gayyoom), Tasmeen Ali, allegedly evaded paying the import duty of two luxury speed boats.

6. Sack the deputy commissioner of police, Abdullah Riyaz (whom the protesters accused was a crony of Adam Zahir and Gayyoom).

7. Open court cases against Gayyoom, Adam Zahir, Hameed, Isthafa Ibrahim Manik, Anbaree, Ilyas, etc.

8. Open a court case against Anbaree Abdul Sattar (former Minister of State for Defense) for his alleged involvement in the Air Maldives scandal (and possible corruption).

9. Investigate the issue of the usd 80 million which the current Special Envoy to the President (Ibrahim Hussain Zaki) accused Gayyoom of taking from the state treasury.

Most of the protesters were saying that no special treatment should be given by the state to a “murderer and ex-dictator”! The message (I think) is that many Maldivians who detest Gayyoom aren’t actually looking for revenge, but rather they are looking for justice. One placard held by a protester at the gathering summarized this thought: “We want justice, not revenge!”

I believe that it’s the least that the Maldivian people deserve. The government of President Nasheed should respect the views of the people. Though there were just about 200 people at yesterday’s protest, one could expect that more people may attend such gatherings in the future and that the vocal protests calling to bring dictator Gayyoom to justice could gather more pace in the coming days. If the government disregards these protesters that would be seen as a slap in the face of many thousands of people who directly suffered Gayyoom’s brutality and a blatant disregard for a nation who suffered for there decades under the iron fist of Gayyoom and his family and cronies.

I support Friday’s protest and call for more such protests when Gayyoom returns from Hong Kong where he is supposes to be attending some conference organized by the Clinton Global Initiative. The theme of any protests against Gayyoom should be that we are not asking for or seeking revenge, but rather, we are looking for and seeking justice. As I said before, that is the least that the Maldivian people deserve. It is the responsibility of Nasheed’s government to grant the wishes of the majority! There will not be any healing as long as the ghosts of these injustices and brutality roam our streets. Let us lay these ghosts to rest once and for all.

To Anonymous 10:36. You are right about Isthafa. He is now pretending to be a very pious man but he is a coldblooded killer. A murderer. A torturer. We shoudl also bring Anbaree Abdul Sattar to court for his corruption in the Air Maldives scandal. He bankrupted the airline for his personal benefit. Bring the bloody ex-military man to justice.

Also, reopen the FPID corruption scadal and make Ilyas answer for that. Confiscate his buildings and businesses and islands to get our money back. Then we can solve the propblem of the budget deficit and the state debts.

You are right, 10:40.... Bring Ilyas to court. The same can be said about his former allies (Adam Zahir and Two-Two Zahir). Especially Adam Zahir for murdering Evan and Solah. Confiscate his resorts and the house...and get the "Loan Satr" money back. Jail him for killing Solah....Solah's family!

Under our Constitution the Judiciary is an independent Body. I say the Government should stay away from initiating any prosecutions. But let the public and especially those who have suffered torture and abuse exercise their right and take Gayyoom and his cronies to court.

Let the whole world see our democracy in action. I hope that justice will be done.

im very much a supporter of anni, From MDP muzaahiraa, gives us hope that other dictators government (nasir the mass murder: Kaafu dhaal, hanaan, etc .. ) can be brought to justice for their crimes. Fisrt thing first ( WHY WE skip his 20 years, reign of terror..,this government also gives us hope that rank-and-file killers and torturers will also be brought to justice. Many people who suffered under nasir's twenty -year rule want to see his government tried for crimes against humanity with maumoon government. so we can finish those bloody governments for our country once and for all .. and start heyo verican, We've had plenty dictators since then: samushudeen , nasir , and the latest maumoon. We need to give punishments that serve as a deterance to others. That's why I support the death penalty for maumoon. thank you

Ibrahim Hussein Zaki may have served in Maumoon's cabinet. But he (like Dr Shaheed, Dr Hassan Saeed & Dr Jameel) were serving the people of this country just like many others in the government.

Zaki served this country with distinction but Maumoon felt threatened by Zaki's charisma, efficiency and growing popularity and removed him from his cabinet. Maumoon was especially worried about the close relationship that Zaki had with India.

Likewise, Dr Hassan and his colleagues served only the people of this country and worked within the government to bring reforms and quit the government when Maumoon started to drag his feet.

So these are all heroes. We are not listing every single person who served in Maumoon's government during the last 30 years, but rather the real henchmen of the Dictator who should face justice.

Munavvar is a different case. He had asked for fogiveness from the people when he was in MDP and I think the public has forgiven him.

it must be investigate how these crooks amassed so much wealth to buy land in male, buy houses in UK, build 10 story building and have millions of rufiyaas in their bank account while being a government employee in Gayooms dictatorship.

Anni can forgive, but the public wants their money back in Government coffers.

Clever Mr Illyas thought that he could get away by transferring all his looted assets to the name of Gayooms children. I think not.

Cease their bank accounts and assets, all theses were daylight robberies committed by Gayoomists.

Prosecutor General ask the Gayoomists to prove how they got all these monies and assets.

Let us protest until we are sure our struggle to overturn this dictator were not in vain. We voted for change and also for Anni to consider to replace all government contracts with these crooks. Most of their buildings are leased to the government at very high prices. The sooner we cancel these contracts or refuse to renew these lease agreements, we can bring these crooks to justice. We have paid for their buildings from our pockets and now we have to lease them and pay for their buildings, what else on earth should we be asked to do to recover these debts. Anni these are serious issues and we want you to look into this. We will protest to seek justice and we want you on our side. Please don't take these crooks so lightly, they cannot sleep with you as President.

But now all changed, and you are on the same boat as Anni and senior ppl in MDP. Look, lets be realistic. You forget lot of wrong doings from the current government who has lead us for less than a month and done dozens of things which have gone against our constitution and our pride (one example SHAHID) or you dont want to write about those. But you always talk about a government which lead us for 30 years - which definitely has done things wrong but I can bet you, if you ignore this government, by 30 years they will have a record 1000 times worse than Maumoon's goverment. Because this is what happened to maumoon too, no one talked about his mistakes initially so he thought after a while he can do whatever he wants. And Nasheed already realised how stupid we are to listen and belived his promises, so he is 1000 steps ahead of doing the same mistakes Maumoon did for us.So PLEASE BUSHREE - write more about current situations and problems in maldives rather than still try to show us how bad Maumoon was. Cos definitely i know Maumoon was BAD n thats the reason we voted for a change. So lets write more about Nasheed to bring your initial aim to write for the betterment fo maldivians.

The best way resolve is to find a commission like in south africa and ask people to publicly apologize for the mistakes they made. We have to ask Gayoom to do the same.

  61. Anonymous8/12/08 10:06

Maumoon has millions stashed away in foreign accounts including Swiss bank accounts. He infact admitted to holding foreign accounts during the campaign, but claimed that he only had "very little money in these accounts!"

If he had so little money in the these bank accounts, why on earth did he need to have foreign bank accounts in the first place eh? A guy who says that he wants to live and die in the Maldives doesn't need foreign bank accounts unless he needs them to HIDE HIS MONEY!.

We must seek international assistance to track all these looted wealth hidden away in these accounts by Maumoon, Yameen, Faris, Ghassan, Dhunya, Yumna & that jerk Shuaib Shah.

Yameen stole millions when he was incharge of STO. He has shares in resorts, STO, Fuel Supplies and other STO subsidiaries including the cement company. He set up the Maldives National Oil Company as a front to engage in international oil trading under the country's name but in actual fact using it for his personal profit. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been stolen through fraud using this company. Maumoon and his family members all got a cut and profited from this racket.

The new government is well aware of all these dealings and will investigate all of them. When investigations are complete, all these rogues will be brought to justice. If these jokers believe that they can hide their corruption and still live freely in this country, think again!

  62. Dear Anonymous 7/12/08 20:40.
As far as I know, more than half of our jail population are behind bars for drug-related abuse or crimes. I call the government to put most of them in the rehab centre and terat them. If MDP comes with a firm plan to fulfil their fifth pledge (drugs), our jail population should come down by more than 50%. Most of the people need to be either sent for rehab or sent out on payroll. Some could be even freed. Does anyone realsie that a large chunk our youth are behind bars. Clsoe Dhoonidhoo. Maafushi jail is enough. Or relocate Maafushi jail to Thilafushi. Maafushi people don't desreve that destabilising presenece there. Jail was a high-profile and imporatnt place under gayyoom. When we reduce drug absue and reduce crime, jail should become a low-profile place in the futire.

how can we forget about only some people? even anni or zaki find guilty then we have to bring them too for justice. zaki is a sure one should be brought to justice in same line with maumoon and the cronies. even if not for the things did during cabinet but for his alcoholic drinks should be punished.

Is Golhaa still in Hong Kong? I think that the conference that he was supposed to have attended is over. So why isn't he back in the country that he says that he will live and die in? I think the old hag got scared that we will protest when he comes. The Friday-protest was a small dress rehersal. The real protest will blow his mind away. Wait and see Golhaa. If u have guts come and face our wrath.

Shouting some childish slogans against Maumoon would only take the focus away from major issues.

The best revenge from Maumoon, Ilyas and Yameen is to Govern the country better than the last 30 years by showing them how is really done. That is the best revenge, if there is any.

We are a poor minuscule country faced with countless challenges. We have just been freed from the 30 years of abuse from a ruthless regime. However, meaningless revenge and call for blood should not be the priority. That is such a hollow and a dumb idea. The priority number 1, 2, 3, ..to 10 should be to fix the current problems such as decentralization, transport networks, economic planning, education, health, youth and rehabilitating this country.

    This country needs to rehab..urgently.

Anni must tell Gasim to publicly apologize for his actions at Reethi Rah. He must also take responsibility for the problems he had created at Maafushi and he must be asked to shut up. It is time for Anni to find able people to run this ministry. It would be better for Gasim and Gayoom to leave politics for us to find solutions. They can keep their money and just leave us alone.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Anonymous9/12/08 06:41

I think we should stop accusing everyone for something or another. We are no saints, but many want to do just good for the country. Give Anni a chance to resolve this issue and put Gasim in his corner. If he is he is going to part of this coalition he is going to keep his ego aside or he out.

by mere luck the word "CHANGE" fed to our youths minds and his support for Ganja was a public stunt. Maumoon was 100% better than Anni.
