Thanks for removing the MNDF-Bodyguards provided to ex-dictator Gayyoom!

Thanks to President Nasheed for finally coming to his senses! Many Maldivians have noted that the constitution does not allow the government to give security (Bodyguards) to ex-dictator Gayyoom. A bill is currently being debated at the Majlis regarding what services the state has to provide to ex-presidents. Until this bill becomes law, the government cannot legally provide any facilities from the state to ex-president Gayyoom. It is this legality of the action that we have been questioning, not whether any facilities should be provided to Gayyoom.

Now that this MNDF-security has been officially removed, Gayyoom may not even return to the country until the pending bill is passed. I support the provision of some facilities and a pension and some sort of security to all ex-presidents (including Gayyoom). But such services should not go overboard as in the case of the bill submitted by Gayyoom-loyalist-Aneesa.

If (as Gayyoom says) he hasn’t done any harm to the Maldivian people and if (as he says) he hasn’t taken any money from the treasury through bribes or corruption, then he has nothing to fear from the ordinary people. He does not need bodyguards if that is the case. The facts that he still wants to hide behind s security fence shows that he has something to hide!

Once again I welcome the removal of the security services to the ex-dictator and I also welcome the protest that was held against the previous regime a few days ago. We have to make the ex-regime answerable to whatever crimes they may have done. Thousands of people (including senior MPs such as Reeko Moosa and senior government officials such as the State Minister for Home Affairs, Shafeeq) have in the past accuses Gayyoom and his government of crimes against humanity and corruption running into millions of dollars. The least that the government could do is to see if there is any truth to those accusations before we close this 30-year-long-chapter in the life of this nation.

I call upon Reeko Moosa to fulfill his election-promise and dig the skeletons of people from the jail that he accused Gayyoom of murdering. I call upon Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki to fulfill his election-promise and bring back the usd 80 million that he accused Gayyoom of plundering from our treasury. I also ask MDP to show us the proof that Gayyoom’s regime covered up the murder of Hussain Solah and Evan Naseem in police custody. Until these cases are properly investigated, we cannot lay the ghosts of a brutal dictatorship to rest.

But the recent protests calling for justice to all, and the removal of the illegal security provided to Gayyoom shows that the government is finally coming to its senses!

  4. Bushry, Your admirable stands in the past have seemed to be about national interest. However, now it seems that your sole focus is on Gayyoom. I agree, many of the things he has done in the past are things we need to address. But don't you think that it is also very crucial to continue to provide constructive critism to the new government's stands on issues. The objectivity we saw when you wrote in Monday Times consistently seems to be in danger of disapperaing.

  13. I believe Gayoom has looted our treasury and had suppressed us to have the seat. BUT hypothetically he did not do any of that, STILL i believe we can not say he does not require the guards. Gayoom ruled fist handed 30 years and there are many allegations against him. I believe most of them are true, BUT its not tried in the courts and he is not yet found guilty. Until this is proven, he has a threat of agry citizens like my self and he deserves a some sort of security.
Lets not be too narrow minded like you suggested( if he did not do any harm then he should not be afraid). he may have done harm but he is not stupid and neither are we?

Reeko Moosa lied about - Skeletons of prisoners in jail islands.

Zaki lied about - 80 million dollar allegations.

You know if you told a lie about the devil to make him look worse that dosent make you a saint.

Since they couldn't prove those allegations after the change of Government, this makes them big lairs. We have had enough lies being told to us during Gayooms time. Lying to the public should not be tolerated. Dont elect the MP' who told lies, whether its MDP or any other political party.

Personally, I believe that he acted within his scope of authority as the Constitution does have a clause to say that former presidents are entitled to security as per the Law (meaning the details need to be specified by law). By removing the security which Anni himself provided, Anni signalling his lack of confidence and a sense of insecurity.

This is not surprising considerin the erratic and day to day bungling of his administration. This new government looks like a bunch of headless chicken!

  65. In modern democracies, the economy is based on free market. The government gives opportunity to people to engage in business and grow their companies. In any case there will be a small percentage of rich and the government will have to tax them and use that money on the general public.

Jealousy of successful people and calling to nationalise their wealth is like communists yelling. The world has given up on communists. Whats wrong with few extremely rich Maldivians? We should encourage more people to do the same and increase the number of Maldivian millionaires instead attacking people who have been successful. For Sure, the rich must pay taxes.

If we want to take back resorts from those who have invested and developed this business, how about taking back the land given as "goathi" for people..say after 25 years, the government can take them back and give to another family. Why not?

Why not take back construction companies and hotels build in Male', on land given to build houses? Why not? Are they paying the government anything? Even rent? So why not take back Relax Inn, and Kam Hotel etc. after 25 years and give it to someboy else?

Get real guys. There is no reason to be jealous of those who have made it. We should look at them as examples and try to do the same.

  71. ………….. In the name of progress we have regressed into the world of Western style savagery and debauchery where money is the start and end of everything. Drugs and booze are the order of the day. The once fiercely independent people of Maldives where free love and let live attitude was the order of the day is being transformed into prostitutes and APES that derive all their pleasure aping the WEST.

The high priests of the new occult religion of liberal democracy are the occultists synonymous with "politicians with the most forked tongue with the greatest gift of the gab". The father of all this is no other than the President who carefully bled this nation dry of its resources and HOPE. In true Hypocrisy the baton was changed from one manipulator to the other- the common link between the two being the intention of fleecing the Maldivian nation of ALL HOPE and taking the one-way trip to even more Maldivian enslavement.

Oh! For the days when Maldives was free and close to nature. Living a life so simple that everyone’s door was open to friend and foe. The days when rice and fish soup was itself a luxury and when life ticked by in resonance with the sea gulls and bulbuls all frolicking in the mid-day sun.

Then there was no room in our lives for some bearded thug or a white man and his human poodle and their stench. A free life under the sun, moon and the stars and life with so much burdens that moulded us into human beings who cared for our neighbour and had time and our brand of love for our children. Maldives one with nature. Maldives that I love.

  73. Yeah. looks like some DRP sympathisers are scared of the business community in the up coming general elections. In every country, the wealthy fund the politicians. In the past Maumoon managed to remain in power due to the help of the wealthy.

This time Anni had the support of most of the big business. In the upcoming majlis elections it will be the same. Different businessmen will support and fund different political parties and candidates. Where else does the money come from to finance the campaigns.

During the Presidential elections, candidates spent millions and the money came from businessmen. Thats the reality. Thats life everywhere in the world. Its not just resort owners who have big influence in politics. Its all businessmen..from Construction to hardware to shop owners etc.

  74. Big resource or small resource, privatisation is the key to economic growth. State managed companies whether public or whatever would be corrupt and unsuccesful. Look around and see the state of our government run companies.

Thats why President Nasheed is going to privatise not only STO but also STELCO. When private companies grow large, they will go public and then people can invest in successful companies.

Thats how the modern economic system works! Just get rid of the communist mind set!

yeah very right. what we are just calling for is government to give opportunities in an open bidding process where every aspiring individual has every probablity to hit the jack pot. and the process should target to distribute wealth not concentrate it on few individuals. there should be a bar to give public land plots if already owned some. would you agree government itself to handover 5 or 6 plots from male to one individual even with or without a bidding process.

confiscate those given without such bidding process and pay peanuts as rents. we the public has given our land for investment and we demand a fair return on it. get that into your head. i'm sure therewill be number of resort owners who agree with this.

ok will stop calling all resort owners capitalist thug. some are captialist thugs who stole our land through corruption and paying gayoom to stay as president.

  80. You can't provide health care or anything without wealth being created first in the country. Thats the function of the private sector be it tourism, fisheries, construction, aviation or whatever. To build wealth you need money. There are hundreds of uninhabitted islands out there lying for hundreds of years and even now. Are they bringing revenue into the government? No. Our fisheries industry is our biggest resource. We are privatising it. MIFCO is going to be privatised. Why? Because the government is loosing money trying to run it. The economy is for the private sector to operate. And ownership of wealth is a fundemental right.

President Nasheed wouldnt be in power if not for the help of the resort owners whom you are so jealous of. The biggest economic powers like USA, Japan and Germany thrive on private business. They don't hate Warren Buffet, Bill Gates or other entrepreneurs. They don't target their businesses to be nationalised. They encourage others to follow in their footsteps. We want to see the day other Koli M.U.Maniks,Champa Afeefs, Qasims etc. make it big in the country and to see Maldivians spreading their businesses overseas. We want these companies to be successful while contributing to the government through taxes etc.
Taking over businesses created by people's hard work after 20 or 30 years and giving to someone with no money to take over does not spread wealth. Thats nonsense.

  82. Islands to be developed as resorts are given on open bids just like other tenders for big projectslike major construction works, making of harbours etc. But, you have to have money even to bid for an island. You need to be able to give bank gurantess. You need money to develop the resort. Banks don't give you loans if you dont have any existing business. Thats how the system works. Money makes more money. get it?

You grow from small business to medium size business and thento Big busines. You don't hit jack pots as some of you imagine. It takes hard work to build any business. We can see people who started small and growing big in all kinds of businesses. Look at Fantasy, Focus, Rainbow, Sonee, Sun Travel Siyam, Jabir etc. We salute these people irregardless of their political affiliation.

Our tourism industry has become a world class industry not by accident. It is through the vision and hard work of FEW individuals that we are the yenvy of our neighbouring countries.

Success doesn't fall from heaven. Be prepared to start small and work hard.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Get your history right. Do some reading first. Way before Maumoon came into power, Champa Afeef and MU Manik of Universal started tourism in this country when foreign consultants brought by the government said it wasnt possible to develop tourism here.

Through their vision and hard work and by borrowing money from everyone, they started our tourism industry in a small way and now w are seeing the fruits oftheir hard work. All this nonsense of them getting islands from Maumoon is crap. Anni's campaign was totally funded by the resort owners and other businessmen.

We don't need communists spreading their hate propaganda in this Anneh Dhivehi Rajje. MDP is an centre right political party who firmly believe in free market enterprise. Resort leases and other leases of land will be extended to create more conducive environment for business and investment. Like wise taxation will be introduced and eventually will cover all types of business activities.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yeah. Why not for 100 years? Why not? Every where in the world, governments are doing the same. Whether you are a small country or big governments are adopting all the policies to attract investment. In Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Mauritus or Singapore governments provide land for leases up to 99 years and in some cases even more.

You have to provide long term lease or ownership of land to attract investment whethe local or foreign. If the Maldivian government doesn't do it, capital will flow else where. Then how do you create jobs or get government revenue to provide the facilities for our public? Even local businessmen will go and investment overseas to expand their businesses. There opportunities in so many places. If Maldives tries to be complacent thinking we are somehow special and will remain attractive forever, that would be the silliest mistake.

There is no need to be scared of allowing ownership of land or giving long term lease. Major projects and large investments wouldn't be possible without such basic requirements. Investments of today are more than USD 50 million on a typical resort. We want to see the day major international companies and local investors develop the country to rival Singapore and Dubai. To do that we must have an investment friendly climate. Th new government has very amobitous plans for this. You haven't seen anything yet.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Maumoon had been playing politics in the past and manipulated the business community by using the land/island lease period as a wedge to divide the public.

The reason why Maumoon did not carry out major reform of land ownership and land lease periods was because he always wanted to have a hold on the business community to use by promising to do it always and doing little by little. The result is that apart from Male', our outer atolls are not seeing much economic progress and we are not able to attract foreign direct investments.

Maldives will soon graduate from a LDC to a developing country and we will no longer receive the kind of foreign aid we received in the past. To continue to grow our economy it would be essential to attract direct foreign investment.
Without reforming the land law (to cover all types of land including resort leases) we will fail in this effort.

Our airport needs investment. Our ports need investment. Our domestic airports need investment. MIFCO and STELCO need investment. We talk of developing regional hubs. The list can go on. How do you get people to invest in these areas if our minds are so small?

  97. Fully agree that past corruption issues must be investigated and justice must be done. We are a democratic country with seperation of powers. We have an independent Auditor General and the judiciary is supposed to be independent. We also have an independent Prosecutor General. This is the system we have adopted.

Everyone has rights under the constitution and people are innocent until proven guilty. As to what punishments are handed for various crimes, that too is written into Law. WE MUST ESTABLISH THE RULE OF LAW. Thats what a modern liberal democracy is all about. Those words were not just campaign slogans, but what the new generation believes in.

So let the system address these allegations and carry out justice. We shall accept the verdicts.

The worst crime Maumoon committed recently was the rigging up of the Supreme Court to appoint unqualified puppets into the Highest Office of the Judiciary. So it is absolutely critical that they be replaced by qualified judges once the new Majlis is elected. Only then, can we commence hearings on these cases. Taking any of these people to court now would be a joke and a mockery of justice. Remember how the High Court ruled in favour of Hanim in his case against the Civil Servic Commission?

In case you don't know, labour is a factor of production. So whether its expat labour or not we need labour to carry out all economic acitivies. Whats wrong with importing labour if we dont have sufficent quantity of labour in the country?

What matters is the out put. We are not prepared to remain idle for hundreds of years to provide development to our atolls. Maumoonist theories of fear of expat labour is not an excuse for us to remain standstill. If need be we shall import thousands of workers on temporary basis to carry out these mega projects.

Small countries like Singapore and Dubai modernised their economy within such a short period using expat labour. Maldivians will never do the manual labour work that Bangladeshi workers do in this country. We want our people to be educated and take up high paying specialised jobs. We also need skilled expats to run ou economy. Again this is good for our economy.

  104. I read the above comments and note the following.

Maldives need an economic policy but because there is none, people seem to be throwing around their own opinions - that is only natural.

That is why some are suggesting crazy ideas of blind privatization of everything. These are most probably rich people who can benefit from such a move.

There are some who favor a re-distribution of wealth by taking it out of those who got it illegally.

In really what we need is a sound economic policy backed by rule of law. Such a policy would have to be pronounced by the new Government, if not the sort of speculatory theories and views would never end...

The lack of an economic policy is not the fault of the so-called Economic Advisor. Its the President's fault. Appointing every one of his close followers to either State Minister or Special Envoy doesn't solve the President's problems. Soon we will have more State Ministers and Special Envoys than civil servants.

The government's ministries and departments have the civil service and the Permanent Secretaries to carry out routine functions and political appointees such as State Ministers or Ministers are there to formulate policy. You don't need half a dozen of that in every Ministry or Department just to formulate policy.

We may hate the former President, but providing security to him has nothing to do with the individual but rather a respect to the office of the Presidency that he held. The drunkard Addu Naseer appointed as another State Minister for Home Affairs

You know what Bush?, Umar Naseer will make much better President than this mad man.

How many us believe that Indian Government will give 100 Million USD. Strangely we do because we are delusional. But would they...? Ask your self.

After his stupid remarks about saving money to buy land to migrate when sea level rises has made him and the country the butt of jokes in the international media!!

We wanted a Change. But the new government should act with sanity.

  143. It appears many are upset with rich people around. Unless we have rich people in a country we are not going to progress. It appears we are all jealous of others who have more than us. We have to stop this bad habit. We don't want a socialist system where everyone is equal and the leaders are "more" equal. We only have to stop others using our money for their own good. We cannot forget or forgive Gayoom, he has so much to answer and pay to us. We need him back and we are going to serve him justice whether his cronies and loan recipients like it or not.

i disagre with everyone who thinks bad of maumoon, i think for 30years whtever he has stolen from us, he made this country wht it is today, he made Maldives known to the world. he was a good president and people are blaming him becoz they cant change this country into a european country. i wud say that Islam will be erased from this land soon . i can see more suffering and hatred in da country after this Anni became the president. people are sufferin more.for instant the rising electricity bills, evrthin is gettin expensive and scarce.. . he is lettin other countries take advantage of our land and someday we wud have nothin... he is not fit for a president.. he can talk well but cant walk. a president who wants to be so westernized and who doesnt believe in his own country's culture and mainintin its religion and heritage is not worth even living on earth.. he shud be slaughtered. i pray that Anni wud go down .
