A senior police official recently told me that he supports the new president’s humbleness and the changes president Nasheed is bringing to the country. But this officer said that president Nasheed shouldn’t dispose of all the protocols!
Let’s take the case of the Number One Jetty that’s exclusively used for the state’s official purposes. Since the change of the government we have seen tourist and local vessels using the Number 1 Jetty to offload passengers. Once I saw a fisherman dragging a container full of tuna fish on Jetty 1. This jetty is a prominent landmark of Male and it would be better to preserve its image rather than open it for all sorts of uses including offloading tuna fish!
Similarly it’s ok for the president to sometimes walk instead of using the official BMW car every time. But it’s bad protocol to let the vice president or any other official to use the BMW car reserved exclusively for the president.
A friend of mine recently saw a popular character (Feyrey) coming out of the President’s Office. This friend of mine asked Feyrey what he was doing. It seems Feyrey replied that he can meet the president anytime he wants! It is good to have a humble president who has an open-door policy towards the public. But some protocols simply cannot be thrown out of the window. One should make an appointment if one wants to meet the president. You just can’t have people walk in to the office and demanding to meet the president as they wish.
It would be nice if we can have an appointment the same day we request but nevertheless we should first have to ask for an appointment before we get to meet the president. It is the responsibility of any president to preserve and hold simple protocols like this.
When president Nasheed visited Fua Mulah earlier this month, and when his delegation was leaving the island, the president had to board the official boat and wait for 20 odd minutes before the rest of the delegation came on board. This isn’t the right protocol. Everyone has to promptly board the boat before the president does. The president shouldn’t be made to patiently wait for others to come at their leisurely time!
Nasheed has to realize that there is a fine line between being humble and being stupid! He just can’t throw out all protocol and in the process trample the dignity of the presidential position just to appear humble. Many of us will welcome the humbleness of the new president but some of us have reservations about the way that the president is going overboard in trying to appear humble.

President Nasheed doesn't have the least characteristics that a President of a country should have. As far as I understand, he's the least presidential material in the history of the world.
Our president smokes at his office, and often goes to the corner shop to buy cigarettes in his official BMW car with the security personnel. I think he being the President he should stop such habits like going to the nearest shop to buy cigarettes and smoking at the President Office. I am sure there will be people like Ziyattey or his personal secretary to do things like this.These behavioural observations should be made to public.
I suggest our president should attend a short course on presidential protocols, and personal behavior as soon as possible.

Their are many Hadith stating that Prophet Mohammed (SAW) would only eat something nice, or look nice, when the poorest Muslim could do so. This is the essence of true leadership. Do you want to be ruled by one who serves himself and rips you off, do you want a ruler who makes you poor to become rich or do you want a ruler who becomes poor to make you rich. Have some damn gratitude for love Maldives or else you will end up suffering a worse fate than ever. Haven't you guys noticed that? Somebody please tell the President to offer Hamdhusanaa to Almighty Allah & Salawaath to the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) before giving a speech. He can stay out of these places if he wants to but i think it does not belong to him to do as he pleases..... Presidents do need a place to stay and we have spent a lot building these places. Every time the president changes in the US, they do not get to do whatever they please to the White House!
Ann's doing is right. He is following the example of former Slovak President Janez Drnovsek whose simple lifesty was applauded all over the wold.

bushry, we must say this is a good post. We like the president being humble but we despise some of his doings like appointments of convicted terrorists and unqualified party members merely for their loyalty. We insist the president should not appoint the atoll councillors prior to the elections of the island and atoll committees and without their say in it.

Mr. President please realize the promises on MDP's manifesto as soon as possible. ReplyDeleteDuring his recent trip to Fuah Mulah, our president did something really funny which I believe he shouldn't have done at all. He was staying at the Police HQ in Fulah Mulah. On the second day of his trip, after getting up in the morning he went to the kitchen wearing a just towel to check what was being prepared for the breakfast.

ReplyDeleteFolks when Nasheed became President, the government coffers were empty. Gayoom spent 22 million more than his budget. He has borrowed over 1.9 billion from MMA. The foreign debt was so high. Nasheed is no angel, but he was stupid to believe Gayoom's figures. Remember the ex Soviet Union where they had a stronger currency than US$, until Yeltsin opened the coffers only to see them empty. We are in the same boat. Things will change after the Majlis elections, but it would be better to delay the elections until everything is in place. Let DRP spend extra money to the islanders.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion i think Anni had been acting like a joker and an stupid person, this may not sound positive for Anni's supporters, but the truth is this and every one knows it. There are some people who thinks that when Anni got the Top Job his attitude and morale principles will change,however i still feel that Anni will never adopt change in his style. But lets hope for some thing difference.
