Some conspiracy theories and points to ponder about the Reethirah-Fiasco!

Listening to the press briefing given by Home Minister Gasim, to explain his reasons for sending riot police to control the protest by the staff of Reethirah, I noticed the following points:

1. Gasim mentioned the Reethirah-Resort’s owner - Moho’s - name more than seven times in the press briefing! It was obvious that Gasim’s arm was either twisted by Moho or that Moho’s instructions were more important for Gasim than that of the President!!! Why else would Gasim send riot police to remove 10 staff that Moho says were sacked by the resort? He could have sent normal police personnel instead of sending riot police with pepper spray and shields.

2. Asked whether he consulted President Nasheed (who was touring Addu Atoll at the time) before he sent the riot police to the resort, Gasim said that he saw no reason why he had to consult the president on the matter. Some people argue that Gasim could be collaborating with the ex-regime of Gayyoom (and DRP) to discredit the current government of Nasheed. It is because of such collaboration, they argue, that Gasim took the “calculated” decision to send riot police to breakup a legitimate protest by a union of workers.

3. Gasim was also at a loss to explain why the Commissioner of Police (Faseeh) wasn’t present at the press briefing. It has to be noted that the current Police Commissioner (Faseeh) was a loyal supporter of Gayyoom before the change of government and that Faseeh hasn’t done or said anything that would suggest otherwise even after the change of government. So, one could assume that he could still be a Gayyoom supporter. Hence Faseeh could very well make a decision to send riot police to the resort even though any sane person cannot understand why riot police with pepper spray and shields should go to a resort to remove some staff that were protesting to get their rights under the law.

4. The resort management said that ten of those staff was sacked, and Gasim said that he was asked by Moho to remove the sacked staff from the resort. Why the rush from Gasim to grant Moho’s wish without thinking rationally or without consulting the president?

5. It has to be noted that Gasim’s relative (Abdullah Riyaz) is also a high-ranking officer at the Police. One wonders how much he was involved in the decision to send the riot police and to use force to charge, arrest and handcuff some of the protesters.

5. A proper investigation needs to be done to ascertain why the Home Minister didn’t consult the president and to ascertain what role Faseeh and Riyaz played in this.

6. It is obvious to everyone that Gasim has presidential ambitions. He could stand to achieve that ambition if the current government fails. Also, the parliamentary elections are coming up in February and any stains on president Nasheed’s government would reflect badly for MDP in the parliamentary election. Gasim’s Jumhooree Party could stand to gain from such a change of mind from the electorate.

7. If president Nasheed ignores this as a minor hiccup without getting to the bottom of this, then a bigger fiasco could unfold in the future and it may be too late to see what roles Gasim, Faseeh and Riyaz would have played in this current problem. The time is now to get to the bottom of this conundrum.

Reethi Rah resort should be closed, they has violated human rights. Please tell tour operators and guests not to come to this resort. The human rights abuse must be investigated and those responsible must be brought to justice.

Answer is simple. Because you are his relative and you supported the november three coup. Before you write about veil on all school girls..hehe..this Bushry is just a joke. a bloke.

Mr. Anonymous, why should you attack the person himself rather than disproving the article? I jumped to a quick conclusion that you are incapable to challenge Mr. Bushry. After all who could disprove the truth?

I know credible people (who are also employees of Gasim) that he does show signs of hypocrisy.

By the way, there's nothing personal here. :)

Mr. Gasim always struggle to respond to media. Watever the Q is he'd always talk about the constitution that he's so proud of. Its good that he resigned. Whenever a Q is raised he goes on beating around the bush. I hardly understand him. And another thing i have notced is that he cannot digest facts. He has no ethics, no attitudes to face the media. Even Mr. Jameel in a debate live on TVM before he resigned said the audience that they do not have the capability to listen. Mr. Gasim always reacts likewise to the media

Big mouth and no brains at all! Most probably 'cas the guy cannot take any criticism. What a retard!

Most likely he'll chk out of the coalition now and go his own way ... end of Anni's government as we know it. Why? Because there are even more retards in MDP ... people who have no vision or brains like the vagu kaleyge Mujuthaba (state minister of something) and that idiot at the prez. office whatshisname Baaree!!!

Maldivians are really screwed!!! Bring the Golhaabo back before all you idiots end up eating your own slippers.

Big deal, now the resort 50 years extension should be canceled.

People are not ready for this at the moment. With the implementation of corporate tax, anti trust laws, and an active Maldives Stock Exchange the Bill could be brought back to the Majlis.

Otherwise it will look like the businessmen are trying to ripoff the public.

Somebody told me that Dhiyaana, Sawad and Baree resigned. These kind of resignations are the norm Maldivian politics.

I suggest people can resign over disputes over policies, but that dosent mean we have to resign with grudges. Keep the party contacts, keep it friendly. Its not the end of the world.

DRP or IDP or Social Liberal Party

The biggest disadvantage for these parties is that THESE ARE NOT DEMOCRATIC PARTIES.

DRP is still carrying the old baggage's of Gayoom. Cant they get rid of this image by being a transparent and openly democratic Party.

Then only we will see a proper opposition.

I dont mind Bushree as a Minister as long as he keeps his integrity.

Put the public over everything else, not business, not party, not government expense account or money.

When the public need him to humble then should be able to humble himself down. Although i haven seen Bushry admitting himself to a mistake, thats important in politics, you should be able to step back and admit to your mistakes.

Its not wrong to have a opposing view over mainstream party politics.

Example: MDP is stressing for 50 year lease extension for resorts.

I oppose this. and I am a member of MDP. Reasons for opposing this is caz:

People are not ready for the following reasons.

    1. Few publicly traded companies in the Tourism Industry. there should be more publicly trading Resort operating companies or force the existing Resort operating companies to sell something like 25% of the shares to public.
    2.No Anti Trust law.
3.We havent even experienced the implementation of Coporate Tax.
    4. The MRf 1.2 billion that MDP boast about in collecting, regarding the lease extension is merely a very tiny amount. If you do the math it comes to about 25 Larees per head per resort per month. Or just MRf22 per head per month. These are miserly figures that make no sense for a multimillion dollar industry. (figures based on 89 Resorts, 300K population, 15years Lease extension).
    5. So with out the proper laws its actually a ripoff of public assets.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous4/12/08 00:52

Worse of all the economy will plummet as these resort companies are ridden with debts and bank loans. They dont have that kind of money, so they are forced to borrow again from banks. Ultimately we will see a lot of locally operated resorts being sold to foreign companies.

The Government is just trying to meet their recurrent expenses with selling future lease rentals (flat rentals with on increase for 15 years), just like what Gayoom did.

Also paying corporate tax is not a favor or a sacrifice the companies are making, its the norm in the developed world.

Now that the Home Minister's position is vacant, President Nasheed should appoint eith Sagaru Nasir or Luthfy (leader of the Nov 3rd coup attempt) to be the Home Minister.

That will complete the circus...with Ameen Faisal and DB Shahid incharge of the Defence Ministry and Sagarey or Luthfy incharge of the Police.

Senior staff at Dhiraagu confirmed that Abdulla Riyaaz is still in touch with his former Boss Abdullah Riyaaz twice a day. I cannot comprehend what they have to talk on daily basis. Gasim's brother in law Abdullah Riyaaz is danger not only to President Nasheed and his government but also to others at Police force including Faseeh. The sooner he is gone the better Maldives we can build. He has been the center of all controversies and is active partner in Adam Zahir's businesses around Maldives. Abdullah Riyaaz is the richest man in Thaa Atoll now, not from Gasim's money but as many suspect part of the drug dealings conducted by his bosses Shukoor and Adam Zahir himself.

Basically, Anni and MDP did not enjoy majority support of the people. But the public supported the Alliance to topple the dictator. If Alliance members move out like this, MDP will not be able to govern this country for too long.

Anni should bring Qasim back into the government and sort out any problems if any.

Better be careful, cos as you know we can trace who you are quite easily. Please refrain from using obscence filth at our President. I don't give a damn about who he might be as long as he is within the limits designated to him by the constitution.
