Nothing can be worse that being ruled by Gayyoom and his misguided bunch of selfish thugs!

Many of my friends ask often ask me what I think of the new government. They accuse President Nasheed of giving senior positions to questionable characters such as Kerafa Naseem. I agree that there are areas that need rethinking, but I would never swap this regime with the previous regime of Gayyoom. I don’t care even if Anni makes Kerafa Naseem the Minster of Islamic Affairs. Nothing can be worse that being ruled by Gayyoom and his misguided bunch of selfish thugs.

When we ask this question there’s one very important point that we fail to consider. The new government is barely 30 days old. During those 30 days the new government has gone forward in leaps and bounds, but perhaps because of the speed of the changes, or perhaps due to some distractions such as appointing questionable characters to some posts, some of us fail to grasp the enormity of the changes coming to us.

Look at the efforts to decentralize governance. This is something that we have been asking for, but now that it is within our grasp, some of us are being fooled by DRP-sympathizers that this decentralisation is against the constitution and that it will not help our development. First of fall (as far as I understand) no decentralisation work will be done without consulting the Majlis. Some Gayyoom-sympathizers think that the constitution is open for interpretation according to their fancy and their needs.

I agree that some of the appointments to senior positions such as State Ministers are questionable appointments; but I believe that the general momentum and intensions of the new government are excellent. Does anyone realize that the new government has saved nearly 500 million Rufiyaa from the proposed budget for 2009, just on three items (i.e. Presidential Palace, Aarah and President’s Office). If Gayyoom was here, despite the hard financial times, we would have had to bear the responsibility of housing him in Theemuge and spending millions on Aarah and spending many more millions of the President’s Office. Put the corruption of his cronies and the deteriorating drugs crisis on top of that and this country would have been doomed if Gayyoom won the election.

Now that we have rid ourselves of the guy, we are perhaps condemning the new government for relatively minor things.

Of course we need to comprehensively and effectively address the issue of gang violence. Only a few days ago a young man was slaughtered in broad daylight in Male’. The police haven’t established the motive for the murder, nor caught any suspects but many believe that most of these gang fights and murders are related to drugs and perhaps even prostitution. The new government needs also address the issue of releasing all political prisoners and putting all drug-related criminals into rehab instead of keeping them in jail.

The shortage of dollars in the market also needs to be addressed. Many analysts argue that the government should legislate that all bed-tax and red-rent needs to be paid by the resorts to the government, in us dollars instead of Rufiyaa. They argue that resort operators should also be asked to keep their revenue in local banks for at least 30 days before they could export the foreign currency to a foreign bank. Such steps could solve our drugs crisis and also help our banks and the overall business environment.

My answer to my friends and any other doubters is: give the new government a chance. I’m not saying that we should stop criticizing and start over-praising. But it has to be constructive criticism. This government will be thousand times better than the parasitic regime of Gayyoom. Let’s criticize the government but let’s also be realistic.

There he comes with another article. Instead of looking at specific appointments(Shahid) which the readers have bn requesting, n other prevailing issues he's packed up everything in one.
Of course we should criticise, but it has to be constructive criticism.

building a solid foundation for the new government is important or else i don't think 30 days and 30 years would make any difference, lets see, a boy was killed broad day light, government in not adressing to this issue but instead they still inside the jail to release more hardcore criminals.. this would lead people to commit more crimes and they'll know that this jail is peanuts..we should be polite to people who are good not the bad guys.. that's why we need tough laws and tough jails. we should be giving police real powers to deal with these culprits and they should fear to commit crime

Not a very sensible qoute there! im a huge fan of MDP, but i think i can not say above.

with the crimes in Male', even yesterday killing this is going a bit far already. Anni, we call to execute a plan now to ensure that killers are stopped in short term and long term education and strategy to improve our sick society and build a more productive youth.

Anni should invite more capable people to help him run his administration. I really don't know whether they are willing to come and join, but people like Ismail Sodiq must be given an opportunity to join this government. He can bring large influx of funds all parties need for the coming election. He will be one who will be willing to do anything to keep Gayoom and DRP away from power.

This is exactly why this Governemnt needs to do something to ensure that the public do not get to a point where they feel that even the Maumoon regime was better!

I sinerely hope this government will do something constructive about all (or some of) their promises and SOON! And I don't mean making executive decisions in the name of democracy and appointing MDP approved Atoll Chiefs (sorry, deputy state ministers, because of course we all now believe that atoll chiefs will no longer be appointed and decentralisation is happening at a fast pace). Gasim is no saint, but even he has a point about the decentralisation issue, doesn't he? Where is the so called rule of law? Or is the constitution in the process of being changed by a 'democratic' executive decision as well?

  33. How can you say that the decentralizing the present govt is doing within the constitution?? Which constitution are you talking about? the constitution of maldives clearly states that the atoll councils and island councils should be elected....so how can appointing deputy ministers to each atoll and appointing state miniters do diferent zones be constitutional??? These are people who needs to be elected not appointed...
And giving the pardon or parole or whatever they say...is it constitutional?? under the present constitution the ppresident does not have the power to give pardons...there needs to be a law passed in majlis to do this...
jus because 800 criminal are on hunger strike....it doesnt mean that they should be released...where are the rights of the rest of the population??

  35. Dear commenters.

Bushry is not the problem here, he is expressing his views as an individual, but MDP's so called united goverment is not competant enough to tackle this country's many problems.

Decentralizing this country will not solve our problems even though it;s a better system than what we have now. Decentralisation should be a slow and a gradual process. We have more pressing issues that the country needs to address.

President Nasheed is definitly not delivering what he has promised. The Heroin trade is still blossomming.. prostitution .. etc etc.
He (Anni) could atleast let the public know that he is doing something about the street crimes. I am fed up.

If he had so little money in the these bank accounts, why on earth did he need to have foreign bank accounts in the first place eh? A guy who says that he wants to live and die in the Maldives doesn't need foreign bank accounts unless he needs them to HIDE HIS MONEY!.

We must seek international assistance to track all these looted wealth hidden away in these accounts by Maumoon, Yameen, Faris, Ghassan, Dhunya, Yumna & that jerk Shuaib Shah.

Yameen stole millions when he was incharge of STO. He has shares in resorts, STO, Fuel Supplies and other STO subsidiaries including the cement company. He set up the Maldives National Oil Company as a front to engage in international oil trading under the country's name but in actual fact using it for his personal profit. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been stolen through fraud using this company. Maumoon and his family members all got a cut and profited from this racket.

The new government is well aware of all these dealings and will investigate all of them. When investigations are complete, all these rogues will be brought to justice. If these jokers believe that they can hide their corruption and still live freely in this country, think again!

  71. "Does anyone realize that the new government has saved nearly 500 million Rufiyaa from the proposed budget for 2009, just on three items (i.e. Presidential Palace, Aarah and President’s Office)."
A little misleading isn'nt it. Welfare is the biggest chunk of both Theemuge and President's Office during Maumoon's time. This has been passed on to Health Ministry. The "proposed budget" for 2009 which you are referring is BEFORE it was even considered by Ministry of Finance.

This Government was elected for improvement. If the yardstick is Maumoon's regime, that will not do. We would rather have them follow the Manifestos they were thumping during the campaign.

"Should Maldives establish diplomatic relations with Israel?"

    www.nowmaldives.blogspot.com

  76. Israel maldives relations have been highlighted in pro regime Minivannews. That signifies secret talks are on going. And foreign Minister (whose has been suspected of jewish connections and Soros) is open to the idea. Also he has 'open' society.

The Israel lobby is rich and money and aid is the new foreign policy. So it makes sense to 'engage' with Israel.... for some. for others it may not..

  77. its somethning tht cannot be acceptable to include old senior ministors into the current govt structure. i call upon nasheed and waheed to resign as soon as possible and get lost from our seen.

But I think he was wrong.

12 September, International Day of Democracy must be celebrated with national pride and festive spirit to commemorate how we gained our freedom from the tyrany of Gayoom & Co.

  108. To MDP voters.

    These are double crossers.

    Look what Mavota Shareef did
    Look what Aslam did.
    Look what Sood did.

They left their respective party after silly reasons. And Aslam said the reason he left the party was "he just felt like leaving MDP".

This shows that they are very immature politicians. All our votes went for waste to boost their over blown egos. They must apologize and reason out their silly behavior before the face their voters again.

Once they are elected their egos will take over again.

MDP voter choose your candidates wisely, and and ask them where their loyalty lies, is it the party or their egoistic persona.

  111. Hi Bush, you idiot! Don't you understand how Anni cuts down the budget of Theemuge and Raees Office? Hundreds of employees from both the place will be laid off in a few days times as a measure of cutting down government expenditures. Is this the new government's policy on reducing government's expenditure?

It's not the figures that matter to us but its implications on ordinary people whose life is dependent on the income they are getting from these jobs. What will happen to them and their families, if they have to survive without a job?

Think before you proudly saying that this government has done something really good for the people of this country. This shows how mischievous this government is and it's not for the people but for Anni and his misguided selfish thugs!
