How about Mr. Waheeduddeen as the new Home Minister?

1. Some say that Dr. Hassan Saeed could be appointed as the new Home Minister, after the resignation of Gasim Ibrahim. The justification used by such people is that Dr. Saeed holds a doctorate in Law and he has plenty of experience as an Attorney General in the previous government. But there are those who would be opposed to the idea on the basis that Dr. Saeed served as a Minister in Gayyoom’s regime. But the current Special Envoy of the President, Zaki, was also a Minister under Gayyoom. Dr. Saeed is an important member of the ruling coalition and he now holds the position of Advisor to the President.

2. Even if Dr. Saeed were offered this post, I do not think that he will accept it. There are many reasons why he may shy away from such an appointment. Firstly, as Gasim would testify, being Home Minister during this period would not be easy. It could even be political suicide for someone like Dr. Saeed who still holds presidential ambitions. Besides, he seems to be busy formalizing the registration of his own political party and also campaigning for the parliamentary elections coming up in February.
3. Whoever is appointed as the new Home Minister, that person needs to be mature in age and thinking, and also experienced enough to handle the pressures of the job.

4. It was observed by a few analysts that one reason why Gasim was disillusioned with the government was because he was put out of the loop even in matters that concerned his ministerial jurisdiction. For example Gasim does not seem to be involved in the political efforts for the decentralisation of power to the atolls. President didn’t take the Home Minister with him during the recent tours to Addu Atoll and Fua Mulah – and some say that Gasim wasn’t even consulted before the tour. Attending to affairs of the atolls without involving the atolls minister or meeting foreign dignitaries without involving the foreign minister are the sort of amateurish things that the new government should avoid in the future. The country or the government is not there to be run by just the president and the Special Envoy and the Cabinet Secretary and the Policy Secretary.

5. Though it hasn’t been formally announced, my feeling is that Ibra’s Liberal Party and Gasim’s Jumhooree Party are now disillusioned with the government. Gasim’s party would have now left the coalition if Adhaalth wasn’t in the Jumhooree Alliance. Ibra recently spoke at a public gathering against some policies of the government. Gasim’ cited some irreconcilable differences with the government as the reason for his resignation from the cabinet. These problems may not lead to the collapse of the government but with a parliamentary election coming up in February, MDP and the ruling coalition should know that things could get worse for them if they continue to disregard the current cracks in the coalition.

6. I think it is time that an experienced, mature and well-respected figure is appointed as the new Home Minister. How about Mr. Waheeduddeen of Bandos? (the former Atolls Minister). Being a philanthropist who loves the country, and who has experience as an Atolls Minister, Mr. Deen could be an ideal choice for the job. His role in formulating the decentralisation law also makes him able to handle one of the most important policies of the Home Minsitry at the moment!

I also think that Gasim and the Jumhooree Alliance should be appeased and (if Gasim is willing) Gasim should be given some other position in the government – perhaps as an Advisor to the President. And I would repeat again that it is time that an experienced, mature and well-respected figure is appointed as the new Home Minister. Deen as Home Minsiter? Why not!

Hassan Saeed is a pussy arsed hypocrite who, if Anni is in right mind, should be thrown out now. Bastard was the backing force behind the crook Maumoon and later back stabbed Golhaabo too. How crooked can one be.

Down with the wuss Pussy Saeed!

Ziyaattey should be given the Home portfolio. He'll do a better job than anyone else!

Dr Saeed would be the worst choice for the home minister. he is no less different than Qasim except for education qualifications. He is a crook just like Qasim.
Don't you see! He is the special advisor, but i have not seen this guys since the appointment. he is being paid for special advisor, but he is busy forming his own party and preparing for his presidential election for the coming term. he will not even take the post even if offered, cox its just not wat he wants. He only want presidency and follow qayooms 30yrs Sultan style.rggrrrrr!
Wat a waste of coaliation. its better Qasim is out, although it might have repercussion.

Do you think Anni did not invite Qasim for atoll tour or Qasim does not like the idea of decentralization.

Very true saying there. Iam sure this is already going on. Mauritius, seychells all these will be very happy abt the news of resort conflicts..

Its a very simple truth that i see even in our own country. Due to the strike in O&O reethirah, some other five resorts called TO and inform them there is a strike in Reethirah and in directly inviting to change the booking to the respective resorts. in a big picture this will happen at international level. We would not want that to happen, would we?

about todays rally, i would like to point out something. i know this is out of subject. but i hope owner of this blog would not mind. todays rally ( a demonstration of democracy) would have been illegal under the previous govt. the protesters would have been arrested, many of the speakers would have been tortured, even given drinking water with powdered glass in the water. many of the older people would also have been imprisoned . i am one of the very strong supporters of MDP. but i support this rally. i hope we can bring those people in justice.

    Questions! Questions and Questions

It looks as if Mr. Gassim did not get caught to the MDP “trap” hook, line and sinker. Now that he is off the hook, he must imagine he is out of the woods. I wonder how long it would take for him to realize that in this new set up, he simply does not have what it takes to play hardball?

When you have money like Gassim’s wealth - Given to him on a platter in the form of capital, monopolies, and opportunities; it’s dangerous to forget ones origins and capabilities. The other big boys – you know who! Made sure that enough rope was given to hang himself. Sure the hanging did not come to its intended conclusion. It remains to be seen how much poor old Gassim is damaged by this. His aspirations to be President seems to be dead forever - after the fiasco at the resort. Is he intelligent enough to realize this?

2 birds to start with, 1 gone and 1 more to go?

Dr. Hassan Saeed most would say is not as stupid as Gassim to stick his neck out as Gassim did. He need not, because he holds enough strings that he can pull, probably to make this country come to a halt. In the present context and given the demographic reality, this is not as far fetched as it seems. (Poor Gassim, one morning woke up to just that type of reality in 1 resort, and boy! did he bungle it.). Dr. Saeed is not a pushover. The people, who matter – the big boys in business, probably realize that here is somebody who can hurt them in more ways than one. He is a star no doubt - What sort of star is this? a shooting star?

The greatest letdown for many are the Adalath sheiks. If it is established that they played politics because of favors received, then they have indeed sold their religion. If so they are REAL LOOSERS. They are educated enough in their field to realize that more than anything what was needed was to get back to basics – to learn and put into life what “la illaha illalaahu Muhammadan rasoolullahi" meant. The election showed that there is a silent majority out there who are deep down influenced by religion. One wonders if the scholars did not throw that huge electorate to the wolfs. Will we ever know? Are we going to see the true colours of our “heroes” who finally tipped the balance - for change for changes sake?

Finally who knows the EXACT MILLIONS spent on the elections? Not the stated millions but the actual millions. The opportunity cost of that? At the end of the day what has citizens Ahmed and Amina gained?

    :-):-):-)

Don't you guys know that Dr Hassan Saeed never wanted any cabinet post? His mission was to assist Anni to topple the dictator in which he succeeded.

Dr Hassan may have been given a symbolic position as an Advisor by President Nasheed for which Dr Hassan doesnt get paid. Its entirely up to the President to ask for any advice on any particular matter when and if he wants any such advice. Such advice is not binding on the President. This was just a good will gesture. Nothing more.

All anti Dr Hassan posts here are from Maumoon's son-in Law Shuaib Shah. For some crazy reason, Shuaib blames Dr Hassan for Maumoon's fall and falsely believes that if Dr Hassan and Qasim were to move against President Nasheed, then perhaps Maumoon can make a come back! MDP is far too popular and Shuaib's fantasy will never come true.

Dr Hassan is formally registering his party which is part of the MDP coalition. This is being done to formalise the Alliance and is being carried out in collaboration with MDP.

In any case MDP enjoyes far greater support in the country that it would withstand any break up of the Alliance.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous5/12/08 23:28

It seems that the remnants of the Baathist Regime of Maumoon are more scared of Dr Hassan Saeed than President Nasheed or MDP led government. This explains why they seem to be obsessed with Dr Hassan and are trying to create the false impression that he is more powerful than he actually is.

Perhaps it is their assumption that popular politicans like Dr Hassan, Ibra, Qasim and other non MDP supporters add credibility to the new Government and that they theorise that if this support were to be lost ( by creating distrust amongst them), then DRP will regain power soon by toppling this government.

Well. Everyone is aware of what DRP dreams of. They want the Coalition to break up so that MDP could be side lined. And hence, the attempt to try and stir animosity between MDP and Dr Hassan's camp. What the Maumoonists and Yameenists don't realise is that all the leaders of the MDP Alliance will always be united when it comes to opposing Maumoon and Yameen.

  36. Anonymous5/12/08 23:49

Hassan Saeed is going to contest for a Majlis Seat. So he will not accept this post.

How about bringing back AK? This way we can blame DRP every time the Police go and attack innocent people like they did to the staff of Reethi Rah.

Talking of Reethi Rah, isn't it strange that it seems Qasim ordered the police to go to this resort due to several appeals from the island's owner Thasmeen! What a small world!

Our constitution doesn't permit the Vice President or the President to take direct charge of any ministry. So the idea of VP taking over the Home Ministry is out.

DO Sappe reports that our Fisheries Minister Dr Didi is in London in talks with buyers of our fish products. He is reportedly considering opening a shop in London to sell Maldivian Fish. Perhaps the idea is to let Sappe manage this shop which will compete with Sainsbury etc.!

Now, before he gets carried away with such silly ideas, HEP Nasheed should appoint Dr Didi as Home Minister and give the Fisheries Ministry to someone with an economic background. Dr. Didi will be a good choice for the Home Minister's post as he is a senior MDP member and a strong character.

Mr Deen is a very nice person. He is well liked and respected by many. And although he too served in Maumoon's cabinet, there will be little opposition to him from MDP big wigs. But as a businessman, he cannot take up this post unless he hands over his business to a trust and relinquish all day to day management fucntions.

I doubt Mr Deen would sacrifice managing his own business just to get a cabinet post.

  60. Dear Anonymous 13.26: With all due respect I think you didn't read the article yesterday. It was titled "who will be the best choice as Home Minsiter," and the body of the article was along the line that Dr. Hassan could be the choice of some people and that soem people could be against the diea too. I also mentioned that I think that Dr. Hassan would not accept the post even if offered. I didn't personally sugegst anyone yesterday but today I'm suggesting Mr. Deen. But perhaps he too may not accept because of the pressuers of his personal business. But if he does accept, he would be a natural choice in the circumstances, I think.

If Mr. Deen is the best we have for the home ministry then looks as if we are back to square 1.

Who are tho remnants of 'Baathist' regime? Zaki? Mariya?
And what Hassan Saeed? Other than the opportunity given to him by Maumoonu what is there to talk about him?

Once again these are resort owners and we should leave them alone to do what they know best. Anni can ask Dr. Waheed to take care of the ministry with 2 or 3 state ministers until a suitable candidate is found. There is no hurry to fill this post. Anni must take his time and attend the growing crisis at Maafushi by sending his envoy back there with concrete proposals. Let everyone including the inmates understand we need sometime to come up with an appropriate laws to attend all these things simultaneously. We all need to take a step back and give Anni the time for him to decide what is best for all not only for Gasim or the inmates. What's the difference between Gasim and the inmates?. I want everything NOW! Hang on folks! Anni's intentions are sincere and honest. Please give him sometime. He really wants the best for all of us.

The key remnants of the Baathist Regime of Maumoon are Shuaib Shah (the Bangalhi son-in-law of Maumoon) who was the puppet master pulling all strings behind the old dictator during the last few years, the two sons of Maumoon - " Uday and Qusay", Azima Shakoor, Athif Shakoor and other Shakoors, Fathin Hameed, Hamdhoon Hameed, old man Hameed, Yameen & Aneesa.

These people have yet to come to terms with reality.

The position of Home Minister was awarded to the Republicans under the agreement between Qasim and MDP.

    Dear Prince Bush

This is a typical typical Maldivian mentality...
    your point 3

    3. Whoever is appointed as the new Home Minister, that person needs to be mature in age and thinking, and also experienced enough to handle the pressures of the job.

A bold guy with white hair may NOT be the right qualification. @X
