A South African style “Truth and Reconciliation Council” could be formed and headed by an independent Judge. The purpose of this council would not be to punish the criminals of Gayyoom regime but to find those crimes and make a sentence and keep the sentence as a suspended sentence or forgive altogether. But it is important to establish the crimes. But in the case of any corruption, such money should be directly retrieved from their bank accounts or businesses or it should be retrieved as much as possible by liquidating their assets such as land.
Well.. yeah that sounds like a good idea. I dont think we should forgive them either. IF this country can forgive 30 years of injustice and god knows the level of fraud during the 30 years, then i suppose it will give future governments to do whatever they want to the country. This country needs to begin its new journey by bringing Maumoon and his regime to justice, to show the evidence of the possiblity of eliminating corruption and injustice to the people.
ReplyDeleteIm not in support of forgiveness either. There is forgiving for some extent.
ReplyDeleteMaumoon shows the humble side of him to public on the 29th October on that press briefing only to deceive people of Maldives. He did this to get the sympathy of others and expecting others to forget his 30 yrs of crime.
