Will Dr. Munawwar take Gayyoom’s side to take revenge on Anni? Or will he take the side of the Maldivian people?

Will Dr. Munawwar take Gayyoom’s side to take revenge on Anni? Or will he take the side of the Maldivian people?
“HimeynInqilaab” website claims that Dr.Munawwar and Gayyoom’s brother (Yamin) have formed an alliance to create chaos and boost Gayyoom’s chances of winning. (pls refer to the link http://himeyn-ingilaab.com/2008/10/10/)
If this claim is true that is a sad state of affairs.

IT'S TIME FOR DR.MUNAVVAR TO SHOW THAT HE ISN'T A SELFISH PERSON WHO PUTS PERSONAL ISSUES BEFORE THE ISSUES OF THE NATION. HE MAY HAVE CAUSE TO BE UPSET WITH ANNI. But if Dr. Munavvar wants to be seen as a leader of the future he has to come forward and tell the people (as Dr. Hassan did) that, at least for this election, he is willing to back and support the reformist candidate (Anni), just to oust Gayyoom. If Munavvar doesn't do that, no Maldivian should forgive him.

Staying silent is also just the same as taking dictator Gayyoom's side. Come on Doc, there’s still time to show that you care. Think of your promise to us that you will not allow Gayyoom to take part in (leave alone win) this election. Now that Gayyoom is taking part in it, at least help us defeat him.

Those who claim that, if elected as President, Anni may work against Islam, should note that MDP’s Islamic Committee vetoed Anni’s wish to appoint a woman as his running mate. This shows that even if Anni wished to work against Islam the democratic mechanism inside the party will not allow him to do so. It should also be noted that, with the current freedoms in the newly amended constitution, no leader can rule with absolute force as Gayyoom did.

Looking at the way that Gayyoom has undermined Islam and the Holy Koran, and abused the trust kept on him by the people, it is evident that electing Gayyoom for another five years means that he will remain for ten years (2 terms) and he will make sure that either his brother (Yamin) or his son (Faarish) or his elder daughter (Dhunya) becomes President after he retires in 2018). No sane person and certainly no one who loves this country would take the immense risk of backing Gayyoom in the upcoming second round of voting. This is our last ticket to get out of hell. If we waste this chance then we are sure to be doomed for another ten years or more.

  5. HIMEY SAYS MUNAVAR HAS TURNED A GANGSTER AND PARTNER OF YAMEEN. HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THAT MANY VOTES TO MAUMOON FROM ADDU AND HE IS BEHIND ANNIS THEFT CASE.

HE IS JUST LIKE A KATHURU FANI IN THE REFORM MOVEMENT AND ULTIMATELY WORKS AGAINST THE WISHES OF THE PEOPLE.

  10. Guys! In my view, Dr. Munaveer, is entitled to his views. He is entitled to change his views in function of changing circumstances ad infinitum. This obviously is his RIGHT, guaranteed by ISLAM.

The fact that Dr. Mun. has changed his opinion and thus his associates, might very well mean that he had discovered traits of his previous associates that he did not, and could not agree with. In such circumstances, to make public his new stand, in my opinion demonstrates strength of character and courage.

In the final analysis, what difference is there between Mr.Gayoom and Mr. Anni? I can very well imagine a “perfect fit” change of roles. Be honest, Cant you? Neither is WHITE. Neither is BLACK. Both of them are a shade of grey. Probably one is more educated, and due to one’s advantage of experience infinitely more polished than the other. One we know! The other- a wild card!

From the country’s point of view, whether we like it or not, Maldives has been put firmly in the world map these last 30 years. Maldives has the highest per capita income in South Asia. One way or other, achievements in education and ed. opportunities are truly phenomenal, and the Health service, compared to what we had, has truly blossomed. That, in my view, is a true reflection of these 30 years, and indeed is above all, an achievement and an eloquent testimony to the resourcefulness of the people of Maldives, and most important ALLAH’s Blessing.

Whoever comes to power, Mr. Gayoom or Mr. Anni, these achievements these 30 years would be near impossible to Emmulate. Mr. Naseer planted the seeds, Mr. Gayoom did the rest, and we now are the best – Maldives first in terms of per capita in Asia. Allah Knows Best! Alhamdulillahi, an achievement we Maldivians can truly be proud of.

You might say, more could have been done , if……… . :-), But then, they say that with 3 if’s you could PUT PARIS IN A BOTTLE !!!!! Te hee heee!

Those are the facts. Probably the good doctor surely understands this more than most of us, given that he played in both teams. The bottom line is ….. the doctor is well within his RIGHTS. Hats off! to him. Even more so, hats off to the discerning Maldivian public. Vive le Republique!

    :-), :-), :-).

  12. Here's whats needed to be done to ensure an opposition win in the second round. The following steps need to be taken.

    1. Change the MDP Coalition to include Hassan Saeed, Gasim and Ibra.

    2. Dr. Waheed resigns as the VP candidate due to "health" reasons.

    3. Hassan Saeed is nominated as the new VP candidate of the coalition.

    4. The coalition conveys the message that Anni would remain a figurehead President as the person who brought democracy n freedom and he would task VP Hassan Saeed with the daily running of the goverment.

Get this strategy across to the MDP Coalition top group!!

  13. Annonymous @11 October, 2008 08:3, appeared to legitimise Gayoom's brutal rule over the three decades.

There are many of us who like to see an end to his rule for a number of reasons. His time in government has helped mostly to Gayoom's family and friends, and people who are directly helping to support his regime. Some of the statistics over the years might have shown 'progress' but the average man feels injustice, and been sidelined from the very own country that you belong.

The writer might have not been in this country, or have been so ignorant that he fails to see the difference that Anni has brought to this country, and also see the kind of governance Gayoom had during his heydays.

There are 1000s of reasons why should get rid of Gayoom. To make the list short, I will tell you 5of the reasons why I like to see the back of Gayoom.

    1. Most of us have to face the consequences of Gayoom's bad policies (most of them are deliberate - among them: divide and rule approach). Most of the people from raajetheri are forced to migrate to Male' for education, health, employment...

    2. The living condition in the islands are markedly bad compared to the capital. Gayoom failed to make much progress over 3 decades.
[Gayoom's track record is filled with inaction and incompetence, we do not expect him to change a bit in the next 5 years]

    3. Gayoom ran this country as a police state. People lived in fear. If you disagree with him and his friends then you dont have a place in this country.
[as a humanbeing you should have a right to express your opinion but he denied us that right, Gayoom tortured people in Jail, ran a kangaroo court and committed injustice to his own people]

    4. Gayoom used state property for his personal benefit, and shared them with his friends and families.
[when Gayoom came to power he was an ordinary man in this country, now his family is one of the richest in the country]

    5. There is gross injustice. Merit has no place in this country. Government positions, government aid, and assistance are rendered only to people who support Gayoom and are willing to shut their eyes on all the injustices.

If your one who have benefited from Gayoom's favoured policied to the few, then understandbly you would like to see him here forever, and would want us to think it dosent matter whoever sits on the top position. But for many of us, we want to save this country from Gayoom.

  14. Yes.Anni going with religous people and not taking a women as VP is a sign for his dedication to the beliefs of Islam.

And we have to keep in mind Maumoon is some one who pretends to be a good Muslims and tries to change Islam to his preferences.

  17. Munnawar is a opportunist, no wonder he has no political career.

I am an MDP supporter, but I guess Dr Hassan Saeed has shown real character and political maturity when he sided with reformists unconditionally with out wasting time like some other candidates. This really changed my perspective of Hassan Saeed.I wish him luck & success, hope he forms political party sooner.

Every vote is important to the MDP coalition/alliance, We need to beat Golhaabo.

He will get the 71000 votes plus the fraudulent votes through vote rigging. All opposition lets unite and vote Golhaabo out.

  18. Annonymus @11 October, 2008 – 12.12 – implies that what I posted earlier was apparently to legitimize according to him Mr. Gayoom’s brutal rule. His contention seems to me factually incorrect for many reasons.

1.- Mr. Gayoom’s Govt was a Govt. indirectly elected by the people of Maldives according to an existing Constitution. Its that Constitution, and the Indirect representation of the people in the Maldives as represented by the then Parliament of the Rep. Of Maldives that gave legitimacy to the Govt. of Mr. Gayoom.

You might say, you erred in the choice of words, and that perhaps the more appropriate word would have been “CONDONE’ . This too I reject for the reason below –

    2. The Websters English Dictionary lists “BRUTAL” as --- 1). Savagely cruel. 2). Crude or coarse.

This man has ruled the country for 30 long years. I invite you to look into these 30 years. What is the savagery that you talk about…….

What took place in Ruwanda under the condoning gaze of the international community was savagery. What took place in Lebanon not long ago when the Israeli’s carpet-bombed southern Lebanon with the nod of approval from USA and UK was savage. What took place in Abu Ghraib under the yoke of USA and UK was savage. What took place in India during the Mahatma’s time, when UK forces opened live fire and killed demonstrators was savage. The Genocide of the native Americans by the white Americans was savage.

The Incineration of Men, Women, Children in Nagasaki and Hiroshima – that was SAVAGE. The fire bombing of Dresden when in one night over 200,000 people lost their lives was savage. And more recently the carpet bombing of Iraq from being one of the most developed countries in the Mid-East to a country without running water and a sewage system and only 1 ½ hrs electricity in a day is Savage.

My friend, the killing of over 1 million Iraqi’s – a conservative estimate due to military intervention in Iraq of USA and UK – THAT’S SAVAGE. All these savageries are REPORTED IN THE WORLD PRESS. WELL DOCUMENTED. When and where in Maldives has savagery occured?

    3. If your contention is that Mr. Gayoom’s Govt commited such savage actions or as u say brutalities , please post the reference to such reporting by unbiased independent INTERNATIONAL investigators in the world press. I’m prepared to examine the evidence.

What we may have is biased reporting my sympathizers or prime movers of the alleged incidents in Male. Lets be SERIOUS. GIVE ME THE LINK TO MR. GAYOOMS BRUTALITY AS REPORTED BY INDEPENDENT INTERNATIONAL PRESS. Please show me one international reporter who has documented his brutality. What we have is MANIFESTLY BIASED HERESAY REPORTED BY PEOPLE WITH VESTED INTEREST.

    4. No matter what system, the elected Govt., is forced to defend the rule of law and order, and uphold the law and constitution of the land.

I put it to you, dear reader, very often what does happen in the world is that politically interested parties manipulate a few Gullible young people into breaking the law. Since often these interested people make their decisions in air-conditioned offices, far away from the line of fire (ARMCHAIR GENERALS), they ruthlessly push and egg-on a few gullible people - often pumping them with promises, drugs and alcohol.

Such poor young people are sacrificed by the machinations of those who have hidden agendas at all costs. Such young, impulsive, innocent, manipulated people invariably stop the bullets, whilst their controllers reaps the fruits of their machinations. It’s a tough dirty world.

    5. Its for u dear reader to decide. The Criminals are those who pulled the trigger to maintain law and order, or those who manipulated those young, impulsive kids to stand in the line of fire with only their nylon shirts or cotton baniyons as bullet-proof vests?

    6. You see it is all a bloody game. The blood of those innocent lads; (who were innocent until they were induced to break the law) - was shed.

How I wish somebody in Maldives had campaigned to have this investigated without curry or favor - What happened? Who influenced them? Why did they break the law? For what? For whom? What was the response? Was it appropriate? Who pulled the trigger?

You see, in law and order situations, things move fast, and often those in the front lines – those about to pull the trigger, and those about to stop the bullet, are often very young, impulsive, and very often ill prepared people with a huge pulse of adrenalin coursing through their veins.

    7. People died. I accept. So, What are the facts? One side accuses. One side defends. WHAT IS MISSING? WHAT IS MISSING? WHAT IS MISSING? – A CLAMOUR FOR JUSTICE. A CLAMOUR FOR AN INDEPENDENT INQUIRY. Why are those lads forgotten? Why? – WE MUSTN'T NOW ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE MANIPULATED.

    8. A similar story was enacted in London in 2005. In the name of maintaing law and order, at 10.06am on July 22 2005, Jean Charles de Menezes was shot seven times in the head. An innocent man killed brutally, savagely without warning in the name of law and order – IN LONDON! Not in some Banana republique.

His friends and family worked against all odds, taking on the system to FIGHT, FIGHT and FIGHT for justice. AND THEY EVENTUALLY GOT IT.

Who has played the role of friends and family of Jean Charles de Menezes – here in Maldives? NONE. You tell me when was the last press conference organised, where in the world, regarding these lads? Now that I mention, this is sure to pop up, but in the recent past….where?

Its my theory that once the hidden agenda of those who manipulated these kids were met, they were forgotten, they became a mere statistic. HOW CYNICAL one could get?

Yes! U imply I am attempting to defend Mr. Gayoom. Correction! I am attempting to share my thoughts with my brothers. On the other hand why wouldn’t I want to defend Mr. Maumoon?

I was born into a family in the islands. My mother and father were poor. They toiled day and night. The callouses in their hands is proof enough. They worked hard, one doing this and that. The other doing house work. Hard work, to educate me. I did. I went out to study, thanks to Allah and Govt.. Now I earn my living.

Yesterday my home was with stick and cadjan, and a pit. Now its stone and mortar, and a toilet. My kid goes to school. Doing well. She fell sick, I had a doctor to see her. I earn my money. I pray. I dream. You tell me! What have I to complain about? My neighbours are like me. My wife was my neighbour, she studied and works too. I don’t break the law. I don’t intend to. Nobody harasses me. Allah has given me my portion. I’m happy. I’m content. :-).

I work hard- 2 jobs, I pray, I bring up my kid. I am at peace, the Govt. leaves me alone. How many thousands are like me? Many! Insha Allah. Alhamdulilahi. Long live Mr. Maumoon!

    Vive le Republique!

    :-), :-), :-).

  19. Maumoon the savage megalomaniac wants to create a dynasty. In his heydays Gayoom abused the power; he is doing the same thing now also will be .

Gayoom is talking about his track record. He has a feeble track record that is full of loopholes.

He is saying that he is the champion of literacy and education. More newspapers were banned under his regime, books are banned for political reasons and his schooling system is run like that of a tuition class. He ignores the majority of students and their needs. The naturally gifted students make it and get a good education abroad but the rest of the students future is doomed. Yet he takes credit for their achievements in education which is funded by foreign nations.

Tourism had developed due to the hard work of individual investors. Gayoom couldn't even provide the industry with an investment bank. Most of the Maldivian resort owners sold their investments in 1980-2007 or ran into bankruptcy. He has a habit of enslaving the businessmen in this country. Look what Gasim is going through, Gayoom has unleashed the Devil after Gasim after he formed the Jumhoory Party and contested in the Presidential election.

  22. Gayoom is using Divide and Rule.

Islam is tool and an excuse to hush the opposition.

I do not find any religious qualities in the savage dictator.

Lol the irony that Cristian religion stared in Maldives with in the Presidential Palace under Gayoom, stiil Gayoom has that Presidential Photographer who had a church at his home employed und under payroll of Gayoom

  23. Gayoom is a lier, impeach for lying under oath.

He has changed the Gun carrying statement 3 times.

First he said in the parliament he and his closest friends were carrying pistols while he took the presidential oath in 1978.

Then he said he did not carry a weapon or non of his friends were carring a pistol while he too the 1978 presidential oath.

Then again he changed the statement on TVM interview, this time he said that he was carry the key of the weapons armory and not weapons.

Then again he changed the statement on HFm interview, this time he said that his friends and army personal were carrying pistols and not HIM when he took the oath in 1978.

also the defense minister during 1978 is saying that he didn't give the key to the weapons armory before the presidential oath, but Gayoom is saying he got the key before he took the oath in 1978.

What a blatant lair, vote this savage dictator out.

  25. Someone said -:
“There are many of us who like to see an end to his rule for a number of reasons. His time in government has helped mostly to Gayoom's family and friends, and people who are directly helping to support his regime. Some of the statistics over the years might have shown 'progress' but the average man feels injustice, and been sidelined from the very own country that you belong”.

    My observation -:
I’m sympathetic with most of what you say here. This is your perception, this is your experience, this is your ALLAH given right, to make your choice. I’m very glad that you have the courage and intellectual honesty to admit - as you say – “some of the statistics” points to progress.

However, in my opinion it’s a weakness to want to speak for the average man. Please let the average man speak for himself. Granted, that you sincerely feel injustice and you feel sidelined in the very country that you belong to. It’s sad. It’s your experience.

I am an average citizen of this country. Alhamdulillahi I do not feel any injustice living in this country. I certainly do not feel sidelined in these islands that’s my home. Just as anybody in any of the developed country I go about my business of running my home. It’s a full time affair. I do two jobs, and my wife works, so Alhamdulillahi our needs are met, and help our parents. I’m ok. As far as I can see my neighbors are ok and my friends too. Some are better off, others less so. By Allah’s Grace I do not covet my neighbors success. So Alhamdulillahi I’m happy in my condition, I do not feel left behind.

I do not feel the need to be bothered by the Government. Like anybody I’m upset when prices shoot up – like so many stuff these 2 months, but I’m content. What do I care if my relation is not made a minister or if the president chooses to favour his/her relative. That’s his/her choice. As far as corruption is concerned, I’m realistic enough to understand corruption will always be rampant in the corridors of power. All politicians the world over lusts for money, power and influence. And they all sing the same tune. In one form or other it is present from East to West, and North to South.

When one party comes to power, the appointable positions will be filled by those in that party. That’s how the ball rolls. If not so, the partys would not get the money and manpower to run it. Thats what the party system is all about. Ultimately the mega bucks run the show. The party is financed to come to power and then "the power" works day and night to promote the interests of the mega bucks. Often who really is behind the mega bucks is not even clear.

What’s essential is that we have an independent judiciary, an independent legislature. We have By Allah’s GRACE got that. Now, Insha Allah we will learn to use these instruments, and Insha Allah all will be well. I don’t really care who is in power. However I prefer to entrust the future of my country to the known person, rather than a wild card. Can you blame me?
