We need to see Dr. Hassan Saeed also sitting with Anni tonight!

Last night we saw Anni, Gasim and Sheikh Hussain Rasheed give a joint press briefing. The most glaring absentee on the panel was Dr. Hassan Saeed. In the next conference of the MDP-coalition, we hope to see all the major leaders of the coalition on one stage. Only such a unified front can give a strong message to, especially the undecided voters, that the reformists can mount a serious challenge to Gayyoom and that we can win and rule this country much better than Gayyoom.

We need to see at least the following people on the stage, as a unified front:

1. Mohamed Nasheed (Anni)
2. Dr. Waheed
3. Dr. Hassan Saeed
4. Dr. Shaheed
5. Dr. Jameel
6. Gasim Ibrahim
7. Sawaadh
8. Shaheedh Zaki
9. Mohamed Shihab
10. Mohamed Ibrahim (Modee)
11. Jabir
12. ADK Naashid
13. Sheikh Hussain Rasheed
14. Sheikh Majeedh
15. Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra)

We are at the most critical juncture of the reform movement. This is the time to reap the freedoms of our struggle. Many simple people have contributed to this struggle.

Personally it’s been eighteen years since I first started writing on Haveeru Daily. Since then I have wrote for Adduvas, Fiyes magazine, and for Minivan Daily as well. I have also been Editor of the English weekly magazine, Monday Times, for two years and wrote extensively for Dhivehi Observer website who spearheaded the anti-Gayyoom voice over the past few years. Throughout these past 18 years I have stood firm in my criticisms of Gayyoom who has ruled with an iron fist and a tongue that knows no bounds when it comes to lying.

Gayyoom is a liar and his track record proves that he has very little regard for the constitution or the law and very little for the religion of Islam. This is a person who – together with his brothers Hameed and Yamin, and together with his brothers-in-law, Ilyas and Abbas – has basically rule the country for their personal benefits. Now the younger generation of his family – Hamdhoon, Shaaheen, Fathin, and his sons and daughters – are laying the groundwork to ensure that the 30-year-old carnage is extended for at least another thirty years.

Their plan is to keep Gayyoom in power for the next ten years (two terms) and then give the helm to (Gayyoom’s brother) Yamin for the following ten years and then give the helm to either (Gayyoom’s daughter) Dhunya or (Gayyoom’s son) Farish for the following ten years. That would keep the presidency of this country in the Gayyoom family until 2038!

The upcoming referendum isn’t a vote about Anni or DRP. It is about the people of this country. Do we want to let Gayyoom and his family to effectively make this country a monarchy? Do we want to handover a blank cheque and the keys of our treasury to Yamin and the Kaaminee-Endheri family?

The outrageous lies and dirty tactics of DRP to mislead the people, and to vilify Anni and MDP, could still lead us to our own trap! My message to those who have various disagreements with ANNI is that, in the second round we are not voting for Anni. Any vote for MDP-Iththihaadh will be a vote for Anni and MDP and Dr. Hassan and Gasim and Adhaalath and Ibra. The way things have turned up, it’s even better than having an exclusive government of MDP. Now we have the chance to vote for a truly coalition government - a government of national unity that Dr. Hassan Saeed described during his campaign.

Voting for Gayyoom and DRP is like keeping the doors of your house open and saying that you trust the thieves will not rob you. Wakeup my beloved brothers and sisters. Wakeup by beloved countrymen. This is a once in a lifetime chance. We cannot let it pass. Place your trust in Nasheed, Dr. Waheed, Dr. Hassan Saeed, Dr. Shaheed, Dr. Jameel, Gasim, Sheikh Hussain Rasheed, Mohamed Shihab, Shaheed Zaki, Ibra, etc.

Gasim and Dr. Hassan has shown that they can overcome the differences and form a coalition with MDP in order to achieve the ultimate objective of all reformists – to establish a government of the people for the people. Let’s make achieve this reality. Let’s vote for MDP.

  1. The STELCO company, which was given such a generous boost by the ADB loan for new generators in the 1990s, was crippled by the chairmanship of Yameen Abdulla, Gayyoom's younger brother.

When Yameen Abdulla left the chairmanship, STELCO's money went with him. October 2005, Gayyoom's finance minister has been asking the parliament to approve an emergency budget grant of US$7.82 million to make up the STELCO cash shortfall that followed Yameen's departure.

Why and how this profitable company has been robbed by the Gayyoom clan and then re-cashed with state funds, is a question the ADB should be asking in its reports and adding to its evaluation of the long-term benefits and sustainability of its 'successful' projects.

  3. If the MDP declares that it will be a National Unity government, perhaps we can talk about that. But this is not a GNU; what he's seeking to secure is an unconditional endorsement.

And no, i do not wish to hand over this country back to the endherimaage clan, but then I do not wish to blindly hand over it to the 'kenereege-?-?-clan' either. That's the whole point.
You say we won't be voting for Anni if we vote against Maumoon, but it all boils down to just that don't it?

Unfortunately the situation is a difficult one to reconcile with. I fear we will lose this one opportunity, an opportunity that presents itself only in the most rare instances to nations; the chance to give power back to the people. There are only a handful of nations on this planet which have managed to achieve this, and even then today they struggle with externally engineered putsches.

The Maldives therefore had a golden opportunity to establish a government that was uninfluenced by special/self-interest groups. A National Unity government would have at least approximated this ideal.

The new/revised constitutional checks & balances against the abuse of executive and legislative power are lost as it always is beneath a kafkaesque system of clauses and counter clauses, by those very same vultures we mean to keep in check.

Consider that fact that the new Head of parliament now resides in his own palace, consider the fact that all MPs have increased their salaries by 500%, consider the fact that all businessmen have been able to negate 'on paper' any involvement in their enterprise when in fact we all know this essentially contravenes that spirit of the clause which addresses "active involvement" in Business

Between Gayoom-his cronies and Anni-his cronies, there is little room to argue on cronyism, corruption, self-interest. What the people need to decide is do they wish to work toward a National Unity government in another 5years, or do we, in our haste replace the old order with a new one.

We all know who Gayoom is. We do not know as much about Anni & his clans; what little we have come to unravel, we find most disturbing..

  4. ya..every single person in the list is important. But, shall I add few to your list.
Though many believes he is a failed figure, maybe Dr. Munavvar can make the list better. Also it'd be of advantages to see some faces like Solah Shihaab and of cause from the behind every MP possible.
Whatever, showing up is just the beginning. This job is more easily said than done. A lot of work is still ahead.

  6. I think Dr. Hassan, Dr. Shaheed and Dr. Jameel should realise a very important point here. Many amongst the youth of this country are desperate for a change. A lot of Hassan's supporters are also mainly seeking a change from the currrent regime. If Dr. Hassan and his team doesn't actively support the MDP-coalition it is quite possible that Dr. Hassan's political ambitions will be seriously dented. Hassan should take the excellent and courageous example set by Gasim Ibrahim. If Hassan doesn't actively help us topple Gayyoom this time, we will never ever vote for him even if he forms a party by the name of "Dhivehinmge Meygandu"!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think Hassan has already stated that this is not about 'securing a stake in government'...this is what sets him apart; this is why he is on my radar...

P.s- I am not speaking on his behalf here

  8. Still i can't find the real coalition i m waiting for. i see only gasim backing anni and power hungry business man.
I want to see very clear picture of Anni- and his coalition and their stake.
Now i m feeling Anni has agreed to give some stake to Gasim's group. The real reform croud is missing. After black 30 years Gayyoom is stronger than we think. we must unite and Anni should speak frankly, we need to see the real picture of his government.

    ReplyDelete
  9. We need to see Gasim, Dr.Hassan and ibra with Anni, than it wil be easy for us to believe Anni.
I advice to Ibra and Hassa to work with Anni to bring reform to our nation this is the time we need u. If u help us NOW, we will help u later.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree that 3 Drs should be sitting next to Anni, but the question is will Anni let it happen?

I dont think Anni will do that.

I also want a change, and the whole country want a change, but what is the difference between giving the rudder of this country from Kaaminee family to Kenareege faimly. it dosenot make any difference.

I think Anni should withdraw his candidacy and let Dr.Hassan to lead and make a unity, it is much easier for Dr.Hassan to form a coalition government but it is very unlikely that Anni can build a national unity government.

Dr.Hassan has been telling this over and over and over again during his campaign and he promised that he will seek to form a National Unity Government, but anni, ibra, gasim never said they will form a unity government. Today when we see Gasim,Ibra and Anni joining hands together without involving Dr.Hassan tells that they 3 have a different agenda and they will not let Dr.Hassan to be part of the Government they going to form.

I think the situation is very serious and dangerous, Anni is an EVIL, Anni will not agree with this team. i have no doubt.

I think it would be better to let Golhabo to lead this country for another 4 years.

Every one together we can change this whole dram and every one together we can reject voting in the second round.

I bet you Mohamed Bushree, that Golhabo will win this election, Anni has open the door to Golhabo to win. so there is no reason to waste time on this fake drama. Lets wait for 4 years.

Godbless Maldives and Godbless the innocent peoples who will be suffering for another 4 years.

  11. some supporters of the candidates in the 1st round has decided not to caste their votes in the run off. this is the thinking of us today. if we really need a change let us all join hands and caste our vote against the dictator. wat difference would it make if u vote for the mosque(maumoon) to refrain from voting to the church(anni). r we sure we r free of those who practice christianity in the maldives. n whoever the president is, doesn't the constitution clearly state Islam as the religion. wake up maldivians, specially adduans. do not get carried away with red notes n drugs. vote against the dictator.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Cherubin, Adduans are the only people in this country who are awake even barely

And the constitution is just like any sacred document, it can be ratified/raped anyway anyhow and as befits the government of the day. It is no substitute for The Man presiding over government..

Who we elect into public office matters!! irrespective of oversight or a Constitution!
Do you want examples of how easily constitutions can be ratified/raped?

  14. i suppose there are around 30000 ppl who dont like maummoon aprt frm anni's supporters..nd possibly 15000 of them wud not vote for anni or rather not cast there ballots...so there is a huge probabilty tht maummon mite win..so i guess anni shud try to bring in those 15-20 thousand ppl who dont like him to vote for him...maybe even go to the extent of promising tht he wudnt contest for a second term..opening the door for other reformers.taking the example of mandela...he really needs to do better campaigning in these 20 or so days...vote for anni..atleast this time..get rid of the old guard.

  15. I agree with aliflaamgaafu.
Munawwaru also should be there. All of them should unite atleast for the big task ahead.
And even if Maumoon wins, we are happy to know the oppossitons aim is to change Maldives for better, they are on the look and they are not divided.
And in the end, they will win.Insha Allah.

  16. Munawwar in no way is a failed politician.Neither is Ibra. The country needs all of them.

IF Umar also got united, it would have been good.

All the writers like Bushri also should now concenctrate on positive writing and keep aside negative writing or present both sides of the coin.It will be more effective in the long run.Presenting both sides of the coin.

  17. It would be stupid of Dr Hassan to fully commit himself to Anni since the chances of an Anni win is almost zero. Gasim and Adhaalath Sheikhs, Ibra and Monaza doesnt have anything to loose. They do not have a political future. So it's ok for them to be seen with the loosers. Hassan is 41 years old and has a bright future. He cannot be seen with people he doesnt agree with, namely Gasim and Adhaalath. He should not do anything that will haunt him in 2013 election.

Oh by the way, I am not voting for the coalition of greedy businessmen, taliban style mullahs and street hooligans.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The vote we give to Anni is not necessarily a vote for Anni - its a vote to get rid of a dictator.

THe oppossition is uniting only for this purpose. And even if they loose Maldivians will know their dedication.
So Hassan too should join them fully for a better political future.

  19. Am voting for MDP coalition and trying to get at least 50 to vote out the dictator.

We should all try to get at least 20-50 votes ourselves from friends and relatives and other people.

The dictator is giving MRF 500 ruffiyas to women folks, convince the women to take the money and not vote for the dictator.

  20. Unity is not based upon the exact pronounciation of the word 'unity' but the concurrence of its meaning. No matter how exact everybody pronounces 'unity' if its meaning is blurred and vague, there is nothing.

In the realm of road traffic, people identify two distinctive things, not distinct in the sense they pronounce those two terms differently, but those two terms have two distinctive meaning.Red means to stop and green means to pass.

People can call 'red' as 'blood colour' or 'strong sunset colour' or whatever. But the wording and sounds are not important. What is important is the meaning.

  23. Its kind of interesting the turn of events. Gasim –Ani , alliance. Observe and decide who the SENIOR partner is. Doesn’t the whole conference speak volumes. Rewind ………, observe…. the body language. What can one think of the choice of location?

Anni won 25%. Gasim -15%. Looks like we are going to have the next President of Maldives elected with a mere 15% votes. Can u see Anni as an equal partner with Gasim?? - the most shrewd, the most ruthless, the most peerless businessman in the Maldives. Wishful thinking people would say.

Is THIS THE change WE HOPED FOR???? FOOD FOR THOUGHT. Is it ANY WONDER that the good doctor IS DRAGGING HIS FEET. OIL and WATER ------ DO NOT MIX. If they DO – one of the Observations is that WHAT U THOUGHT TO BE WATER, IS NOT WATER BUT OIL. Good luck guys. GOD HELP US!

  26. I don’t think we can win this election and topple the 30 years old government.
Its very unlikely we can get most votes from Hassan and Gasim Supports. We have been campaigning to Anni from the day election results disclosed. No one we has said they will vote to Anni in the second round among Hassan and Gasim supporters.I could not figure out why they hate that much to Anni. They says they don’t want Anni to be there president. They linked Anni with Christianity, they linked anni November 3rd attempt, they told Sikka story , they linked temple flower with Christianity too ,,,etc. We tried a lot to convince them, we told them Anni cannot build temple here and see the constitution, Suprim court , Parliament and peoples are there , how can 1 person do such things. We told them thet they are going to vote to form a unity government. but they said they don’t want Nasheed(Anni) to be their president. From all that We believed it would be very difficult for us to success the election since the people brain were washed during the 30 years.People consider values such as good character, discipline, appearance and religious

We all voted Anni but we can say if we want to topple the current government and save from a family rule Anni should step down and let Dr.Hassan Saeed to form a government. Those who voted to Anni will vote anyone that MDP endorse. So we can nicely beat Maumoon with 44000(anni supporters)+29600(Hassan supporters)+13000(half of Gasim supporters) = 86600 votes. Players playing on the ground will not realize what spectators feeling and the errors they do on the ground. The biggest mistake is they always over estimated and miscalculated everything.Lets face the reality. I call Anni to step down and make every one happy. We all value the work done by Anni.Pray Allah to make us unite

  27. i surely wont vote for anni if he doesnt let Dr. Hassan come in the front line. wht i believe he is the only person in the Maldives plitical arena tht can bring the changes we r dreaming. mwy be MDP activists wont let Hassan come in the front line, os, then it would end up again and Maumoon will be elected. Hope Dr. hassan still have bright future and he is one tht we r dreaming to become president of maldives.

  34. IT WAS ASKED IN THIS BLOG……

Can you guide the readers how to help/support this campaign, so that MDP Alliance can win this election.

In ANSWER ---- Anni needs to be open about his position about many issues. Clarify so that there is NO DOUBT. He is campaigning on a platform of Demoncracy. This means certain things both explicitly and implicity.

One of the main tenets of a democracy is individual freedoms. Amongst many things, this means a person has the freedom of expression, a freedom of choice and hence freedom of choice of choosing his or her religion without fear of censure or punishment.

Thus Democracy guarantees Maldivians a chance to change their religion to Christianity, Buddhism , Hinduism or Whatever other form of Denial of Islam. That’s the first step.

The next step would be that Democratic ideals guarantees such Maldivian apostates freedom to practice their religion, and also to proselytize. Given the example of India and Sri Lanka, Millions of dollars would be made available for proselytizing among the remote islands. In both India and Sri Lanka these Christian Missionaries ( Who are natives converted and paid to convert, using tactics as building homes, schools, and making jobs, with massive Missionary funding.)have used locals who converted for money, to get others in need.

That’s how the first church could come to be built in Maldives- A remote island first in a bedroom. In their concept a church is not just a massive building. It can be a group of just 2 or 3 meeting in a room. This is how the Christian sects like the Jehova’s witnesses and other evangelical groups start their activities. Have a look in Sri Lanka and India. Wide spread rioting in India against Christians are a direct result of such proselytising. The Sri Lankans too have woken up to this danger.

You ask how is Anni to gain votes? Certainly getting an answer to this will certainly potentially gain him 1 vote – my vote. There are many like me, some not even willing to talk about their fears. Allah had given Maldives a unique blessing.

We are 100% Muslims. Maldives apparently is classified as the MOST DIFFICULT COUNTRY TO BUILD A CHURCH IN. I am sure NO MALDIVAN – IN HIS RIGHT SENSES - :-).. WHO UNDERSTANDS THE RISKS will want to take the risk of answering on Judgement day the consequences of his vote in 2008.

To add to the bargain, now it’s come to light that JEHOVAH PROJECT is to say the least... is not a stranger in Maldives. What more will come to light in future. Anni needs to address this issue calmly, logically and firmly. Many are thinking of this issue.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anni has clearly said no other religon would be welcome here.Adhaalath has confirmed it.Thats enough for us for the moment. And we are voting Anni.

The other party is spreading this misconception, using Islam as a tool.
