We have to give a lot of credit to Mohamed Nasheed for his gutsy and unwavering vision

I have got unofficial news that the outgoing president (Gayyoom) has telephoned the president-elect Nasheed to congratulate him. Alhamdulillah. The Maldivian people have won, and the dictator has lost. While we bask in this glorious victory, let us remember a few points that may help us along the way as we prepare to take this country to a new level.

1. A major part of this victory is the dhua of many pious people. Hence we need to acknowledge this by organizing a two-rakath namaaz where all reformists and supporters of the Iththihaadh gather to pray and say thanks to Allah.

2. As we celebrate we should avoid DRP-style shows where we see lewd dances and vulgar language. We should thank Allah and accept this victory humbly and with grace.

3. Of course we need to celebrate this victory with lorry rounds and cycle rounds and rallies but we should avoid rallies of the type organized by Gayyoom when former president Nasir left this country.

4. Gayyoom and his family and his cronies and friends have a lot to answer for, but we should let the natural course of justice take its path instead of taking the law into our own hands. Our main task now is not to vilify Gayyoom but to think, plan and reshape our country and our future. The state and the individuals can bring Gayyoom and his cronies to justice.

5. My advice to Gayyoom is to concede defeat gracefully. If this country goes into any type of chaos due to actions of Gayyoom or his supporters, he will lose the last piece of legacy that he can leave behind. We invite Gayyoom to keep his word and stay in the country despite the defeat. If he believes he ruled the country fairly then he has nothing to fear. The justice system of this “Aneh Dhivehi Raajje” will not be as corrupt as the one he presided over.

6. I ask president-elect Nasheed to honour his promise and make Muleeaage his presidential palace and convert the presidential retreat Aarah into a resort for locals.

7. We need Nasheed to honour his promise of a mid-term election but I humbly suggest that Nasheed should be given at least four years before this mid-term election. He needs at least four years to lay the groundwork of most policies and projects he promised in his manifesto. During those four years I suggest that Nasheed propose to the Majlis to shorten the length of the presidential term from five years to four years (as in the case of the United Sates). This means that MDP-Iththihaadh could hold the mid-term election in 2012 and then following elections would be in 2016 and 2020.

8. Congratulations to all those who worked incredibly hard with great faith and determination. May Allah guide us all to reshape our future and this country of ours. This is a momentous victory and the gravity of it has yet to sink in. We have achieved this against all odds and we have to give a lot of credit to Mohamed Nasheed for his gutsy and unwavering vision.

  1. Prior to the election we heard all the horror stories of Yamin going to do this or that.Or that Yamin will close down the entire Villa chain of companies.Or that the money in BML has dissappeared.Or that Yamin and Maumoonu are trying to use the army to create a bloodshed

In the end, sympathy votes went to Anni

dont make a big deal out of it and dont try to be an untouchable like maumoon. that was his weakness. annis strenght is he can connect with the guy on the street and thye can relate to him.

  8. the real work remains. let's see what anni (said with due respect) and his team does. Maumoon may have some trick up his sleeve but must say his acceptance of his speech in such a graceful way was a big surprise...in a nice sort of way.

  9. Hi Bush, I thank you for keeping me up to date during the past few days.Huh, I think I will save and keep all those text messages.

Well, we have got the changes we all dreamt of. Let Mr.Nasheed be cautious of Gayoom, you never know what he has in his cruel mind for Mr.Nasheed.

Mr.Nasheed is a true hero and he has proved that truth prevails and hard work always bring good results. All we need is courage and tolerance. If not for Mr.Nasheed, I am sure we wouldn't have achieved the freedom of expression that we have today.

    I salute you Mr.Nasheed!

May almighty Allah keep you fit and fine always!

  11. Bushry, I have been religiously following your writing, from haveeru articles till now.You have done a tremendous job in transferring information to people near and far.Good job!

Honourable Nasheed has tumbled and toiled and reached there! Congratulations! I hope that he will make a good leader and live up to our expectations to improve the education, health, poverty to name a few.
    As Noam Chomsky said:
There are no magic answers, no miraculous methods to overcome the problems we face, just the familiar ones: honest search for understanding, education, organization, action that raises the cost of state violence for its perpetrators or that lays the basis for institutional change -- and the kind of commitment that will persist despite the temptations of disillusionment, despite many failures and only limited successes, inspired by the hope of a brighter future.

And Gandhi:When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS

Bushry, you are the best! Keep it up! Let your plen flow...

May Almighty Allah prosper our nation and protect her under the Hon. Nasheed's leadership!Amen

  12. President Maumoon has infact shown a brave face. He was cool calm and collected.Accepted defeat gracefully.I admire him for his gesture.A true Maldivian. Maldivians, as muslims, have most of the times been forgiving.

President elect Nasheed, has promised to ensure that the present President remains in the nation with respect and dignity. Well done Nasheed, you are a true hero! Such good examples you have shown, Maumoom and Nasheed.

The children of Maldives salute you!

What will happen to Ibrahim Hussein Zaki?

What will happen to current MDP members who voted for Maumoon in the parliament ?

Remember '30 years' factor played a lot in the outcome of the election?

    ReplyDelete
  17. why are people so concerned about Theemuge.

Why not demolish the place and include that space to extend the local Market or demolish the building and make a park there.

The point is it could as palace or for any other use.

Even journalists and reporters in Maldives have that mentality. Anni hasent even taken oath and they were asking him if he would contest in the next election.

This was also shown when they had a press briefing with the Auditor general, every reporter/journalist was asking Mr Naeem to spoon feed them what their opinion should be like, they should have the ability to process the info and generate their press reports using their analytical and interpretation skills.

Dont ask silly questions like 6th grade children.

    ReplyDelete
  18. is anni really going to give theemuge to the college? it would be ideal for the faculty of hospitality and tourism. wow!

    ReplyDelete
  19. to have a university building Male is not the ideal place. A university requires several buildings and lot of land, the best thing the government can do is to transfer all the educational infrastructures to other places of the Maldives including addu. addu gan is an ideal place for an engineering campus. What is the use of congesting already cramped capital. Why should we follow the old governments hypocrite polices in the new Maldives.

  20. Yea Addu will be great for a university. MDP give out the big projects to the outer atolls.

also the one with noam n gandhi's quotes

i think making theemuge into a univ is just plain childish......let theemuge be, it is an investment that would remain for many generations to come, as the official residence of the president of maldives.....to make a univ what you need is NOT just one big beautiful building

instead find out ways to cut down expenses in theemuge and make it more ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY, energy conserving methods of generating power etc; MAKE IT AN EXAMPLE OF ECO_FRIENDLY BUILDING AND AN ICON FR OTHER NATIONS IN THIS REGARD...after all what better icon than to hav the presidential palace of the most vulnerable nation(in terms of climate change) on the planet as a symbol of eco-friendly energy saving architecture??

  22. What we are witnessing is the calm ahead the storm. Anni is asking people not to provoke or insult the regime is because he has not yet officially been sworn in and the dictator still has the police force under him. That is the only reason we are waiting. Imagine how many lifes, how many rights of other people, how many wealth has been lost by them. The dictator himself providing the necessary assistance now to Anni is because he is afraid of a public uprising while he is still here and he wants to be there till the end of his period. He must be packing now and will leave the country immediately after the oath of the new president. Dont believe either of them. All of them are politicians. A rat and a cat cannot live peacefully together. Although 'let the natural course of justice takes it path' we, the Maldivians, must not let them escape with our wealth. For an example the house of Adam Zahir belongs to us as the plot was given to him by the president and built by our money. Anni must make sure that we are not been cheated even after they lose the power.

  25. There is clearly an attempt by MDP party loyalists to stifle any opposition to an MDP led government by crippling DRP. This is the most important reason why the fervor has increased of late, on this calling for 'justice' by incarcerating Maumoon. All this while only a mere 48hours have passed since the nation breathed easy, following what was hoped would be a smooth transition of power.

It would appear that MDP hardliners still have not been able to bury their hatchets and move forward. Their blood-lust clouds their judgment and they seek to fulfill the prime reason why an opposition movement against Maumoon had come into place in the first place- to satisfy an insatiable desire to follow age old vendettas, dating back to the 80's when several attempts to remove Gayyoom through bloody coups failed with them languishing in Maldivian dungeons.

It would not be wrong to say that the MDP has much blood on their hands, and that the involvement of its key players in these attempts should be subject to a parliamentary inquiry adjunct to any indictment of Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. But we need to forget yesterdays hate if we are are to embrace tomorrow's challenges with hope and the prospect of a lasting peace that nurtures healthy-politics (thaahiru siyaasee vaadhaverikan) while ensuring that the public is not consumed by the hate & bitter rivalries that have characterized this election campaign. It is the only way we can move forward on the road to national development.

He was a dictator, but not a despot of a nature that the opposition of the time had portrayed him as being; cronyism Had become rampant in the latter years of his Office, and some of the most identifiable figures of corruption in his government are today MDP's iconoclasts. Yesterdays instruments of alleged despotism in Maumoon's government, such as Ibrahim Hussein Zaki and Munnavar are today champions of the people. So, it could hardly be said that these voices for retribution, emanating from within MDP's hardliners is an egalitarian calling for justice & equality of All in the Law's purview.

Yes, Maumoon is now weak and cowering in the corner, and that maybe part of the reason why he has so gracefully accepted defeat. But had he been the vile despot that we all caricatured him as being, he could have violently clamped down on the opposition despite a win for us, and irrespective of an International presence. I think he has shown great character even if it was when he was at his weakest. And we must refrain from giving in to our carnal urges to humiliate and dehumanise him for all the injustices many of us may have received during his 'reign'.

One would hope that once an MDP led government is sworn into office that such demagoguery and petty politics would make way for a healthy exchange of political discourse that places the interests of the people at heart. Let due process take it's course and let's not make 'Anneh Dhivehiraaje' a distorted reflection of yesterdays hate and antagonism.

A healthy democracy preconditions that a healthy opposition exists, while Independent non-partisan institutions are necessary to keep both alignments in check.

Until such time, this manner of calls for reigniting old flames while we straddle on this fine line between smooth transition & anarchy, must be abandoned. I sincerely call on MDP's propaganda machinations, especially on the Maldivian Blogosphere to relinquish this garb of malice and recede from this dangerous path they have taken at such a crucial point in our little nations history. I note that at this point these factions constitute a minority within the wider Coalition consensus.

Peace is mutual. Peace is for all. And the only way to move forward is to acknowledge that the past is the past.

"“Lower your hearts in success and raise them in defeat.” H.E President-elect Mohamed Nasheed

    Much thanks

you are very right. i my self voted anni. but i dont want to see harrasment of an old man in his weakest. thats sadism.

we are eager to blam all the ills of past years to only one person. there is a dhivehi saying eh ah thelhiyas ade nukiyaaney. if there is nobody to accept bribes, cuts, how can the giver thrive on nepotism.

the truth which the opposition would dare not say is

some of our own people and us are responsible for all ills of the past and we cant end just blaming one man.
corroption and all evils flourish becaue the people accetp and thrive on it and never work agaist it. stay shut up just enjoying the perks

On the other hand Golhabo is trying to gain public support for the next election. So MDP ithihaad should gain the majority of people’s majlis. And amend the constitution that “ehve’s irehga rajjeyge verikamuge dhe dhauru koffai huri meehahkah nuvun.” Then there will be no threat of “RETURN OF THE GOLHABO, Load of dictators”.

Congratulations ANNI, wish you all the best.

  31. i voted for anni. the reasons are obvious; they need not be spelled out. however, observing maumoon at his latest drp rally made me see something i thought was rather shocking. he was smiling despite the many supporters who were publicly crying amongst them was the minister of gender (not for love for him, but for what could have been ...for her had he won)my point is, maumoon must be relieved that its over, maybe a lot of us misread the old man, maybe it was a lot of selfish people who was pushing the old man to the front lines for their own selfish reasons, maybe he was smiling because anni turned out to be a surprise to him too (his policies with respect to maumoon and his regime). i think both anni and maumoon deserve respect from all of us no matter who we voted for. in the end, anni's aneh divehi rajje started well. let's see what he does to it in the next few years.

    ReplyDelete
  32. still hard to believe that Gayoom gave up so easily without playing it dirty.

Gayooms childern must make sure that their old man is not pushed from left and right by the power hungry people in the old regime.

An MDP government can make sure he lives a respected life in Maldives.

Whatever his faults can be forgiven if becomes a part of democracy in this transition period.

Please dont take any of the grudges at a personal level, if there is any dispute there always be the "gonna be" independent supreme court.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I casted my vote to Anni but in reality the vote was not a vote just for Anni. It was a vote to oust Mamoon Abdul Gayoom. No matter how old Mr. Gayoom is we must show that in the new Maldives an independent judiciary is a supporting pillar in achieving social justice. We must form an independent commission to probe into illegal and corrupted activities committed by the government of the former dictator Mamoon Abdul Gayoom. Democracy will not make a sense of it if we forgive and forget crimes perpetrated by murderers.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gayoom had no option to play dirty games. His only option was to admit defeat and so he did. If he had an option he would be taking it. When people have given their verdict the only option available was to bow down since senior military personals were monitoring the election and a day before the election MDF leadership assured that they would respect the outcome of the election no matter who wins it. So there was no option for Mamoon to impose state of emergency and ban the parliament on the grounds of anything hopeless.

  35. My God, we can finally breath freely.

Huge tasks ahead my friends, to root out corruption, wastage of public funds, a solution to drug abuse, Housing and developing and creating employment in the atolls.

  36. we dont want to crush drp. that might be the objective of hard core MDP supporters so they can run this country like a dictatorship.

never ever forget that 97000 ppl voted for anni is not mdp supporters. so if you want the majority votes of the country, going after which hunt and harrasing DRP members will ensure only 41000 stays with anni so you will not win nation wide elections.

agreed that if there is millions of rufiya stolen that should be recovered properly. but leave that to auditor general and other independant institutions

what anni has to do is setup a clean government and free it from corruption and get on the business of making our lives better- in short what he is saying is right. look into future

    ReplyDelete
  37. There should be an immediate enquiry into the corruption of Zaki and Reeko Moosa for importing a statue into the country

Anni may not hold a mid term election. He is not a man who can keep his promises.Remember some years back he said if Maumoonu can get even 2000 votes he will exit from politics.

It is a shame that the first political party of this country did not a presidential candidate who can recite the shahadah

  42. If you are concerned that DRP seeks to get majority seat in parliament, then the MDP led government should demonstrate why the people should not fall for DRp's charades once again....MDP needs to demonstrate that it has what it takes to transform this country, to turn it around.......MDP needs to show it's muscle in parliament by putting forth fundamental amendments in the way this country has been run, by implementing transformational policies that could see this country keep on track on the road to economic development......That's what it needs to do, NOT start another smear campaign against gayoom or reiterate the old calls for justice by putting him on trial!!!

You people need to get that street-politics mentality out of your systems and get on with running the nation. We have given you the mandate. Now prove your worth. It cannot be done so, by crapping on DRP again...
