Don’t forget to elect a star cabinet and not a “Lava Party”.

While we congratulate Nasheed, we have to appreciate that now he has a tougher job than winning the election. In fact, forming and running a government could be much harder and trickier than winning the election itself. Nasheed has to realize that we did not sacrifice our lives and our time and our livelihood to make way for some corrupt hoodlums to become ministers and what not.
I understand that president-elect Nasheed is facing immense pressure from the coalition (Iththihaadh) members to appoint their cronies as Ministers. Gasim is holding on to his share and so are Dr. Hassan and Dr. Waheed and Adhaalth and Ibra.

1. Gasim as Home Minister?!@%*

The cabinet list has not been announced yet, but according to some unconfirmed sources, Gasim Ibrahim will be Home Minister. It is assumed that the Atolls Ministry would be incorporated into the Home Ministry. This would give Gasim immense power over the atolls and the capital island (Male’) and also power over the police force. If this is true, then the appointment of Gasim as Home Minister would create fear among many big businesses who are his direct competitors. This would be a destabilizing appointment. Gasim should realise that he and his business came very close to being annihilated! Now that Allah has saved him, he should stop trying to bundle more power for him and his cronies. Stop the greed Gasim. Stop the greed DR. Waheed. Stop the greed Ibra. Stop the greed Dr.Hassan. If you fail this time, Gayyoom and his cronies will have a good laugh at your expense. And in the process we will risk losing this hard-earned freedom. Have some sense guys!

2. Sawadh as Tourism Minister?!@%*

My sources tell me that Jumhooree Party’s running-mate, Sawad is being proposed as the new Tourism Minister. His higher education was in the field of religion, and only God knows how he can be capable of leading our tourism industry into the 21st century. If this appointment becomes reality, it would be seen as Gasim flexing his muscles to appoint one of his proxies to the important portfolio of tourism. Imagine the amount of destabilization this would cause to the big players in the industry – i.e. Universal, Champa, Sunland, etc. It would indeed be a tragedy if Sawad is appointed as the tourism minister.

3. Dr. Musthafa Luthfee as Education Minister?!@%*

I hear that Mustafa Latheef will be appointed as the Education Minister. I humbly disagree to this appointemnt. I have worked under Mustafa at the Education Ministry some years back. He is a kind and very nice person. Incidentally he is a distant relative of mine as well. More importantly he is qualified in the field of education and holds a PhD. But Dr. Mustafa Luthfee is a very slow and bureaucratic person who is not dynamic enough to lead our Education portfolio. Education will be one of the most important areas in this new government and it would be sad to see it being left to a slow bureaucrat such as Dr. Mustafa.

4. Sarangu Adam Maniku as Trade Minister?!@%*

I also hear that Sarangu Adam Maniku will be appointed as the Trade Minister. I would not comment on his reputation but I would say that he is a person who is not qualified for such a post. While we have many qualified MBA holders and economists in our country why would we want to leave someone such as Sarangu Adam Maniku at the helm of our Trade Ministry? Is iy waht the "wathan" wants? (E ee Wathan Edhey Goi Tha?) It baffles me. It would indeed be a tragic and very destabilizing appointment.

4. (Folhi) Siththi as Gender Minister?!@%*

It would be sad if Nasheed has to distribute cabinet posts like “Aneemaa Mudhaa” (spoils of war). Nasheed has a very difficult balancing act between choosing people in the Alliance (many loaded with greed) whom he has to please vs being seen as a non-corrupt person. I would urge Nasheed to show leadership here. This is the ultimate opportunity for him to show leadership as a people’s person. He does not have to respect the choice of the Iththihaadh if it’s a bad choice. What if Dr. Waheed suddenly has a change of mind and ask Nasheed to appoint (Folhi) Siththi as the Gender Minister. Will Nasheed agree to that?

So I call upon Nasheed to show leadership and avoid becoming the laughing stock of this country. There are many capable and dynamic people to lead this country in the new team – people such as Dr. Shiham, Sheikh Faarooq, Dr. Abdul Sataar Yusuf, Hamza, Ahmed Mujuthaba, Arif Hilmy, and many, many more. So please don’t give Tourism to Sawad and Trade to this Sranagu guy and Education To Dr. Mustafa. It will be a start on the wrong foot. Show leadership and say “No” to Gasim or Dr. Waheed or Dr. Hassan when you have to say “no” – after all it’s you that we elected as president, not some fictional person called “Iththihaadh”!

Nasheed, please be wise and take the risk. This is the time to bring down the axe to clean up MDP and the Iththihaadh. If you are wise you would rely more on MDP then the presidency. A man's got to do what a man's got to do. So don’t forget to elect a star cabinet and not a “Lava Party”.

The test of Anni's smartness is how strong MDP gets after forming the Cabinet.

Anni would be wise to do the following.

    1. Take the leadership of Ithihaadhu in the hands of MDP by electing only MDP members to key positions.

    2. Preapare for the departure of some people from coalition.

If other parties in the Ithihaadu get stronger than MDP, after the Cabinet, that would be the death of Anni and power base - MDP. Then Anni would be like Gorbachev who did everything but did not get power.

    Lets see how Anni does.

The question is who would be forced to eat humble pie...or forced to take a lesser portifolio.

Qasim and Hassan Saeed would have high expectations. But it would be a strategic mistake if Anni makes them stronger.. Then Anni would be creating a competitor to none other than himself.

In politics there are no permanant friends or enemies. So expect 'blood' to be spilled.

Oh brother bushry.dont expect Gasim to change.he got preferential treatment before and he expect the same from the new govt.as well.just like Gayoom he can't operate in a democratic govt. all what saw from him in the second round was just a show to protect his wealth. thats a well known secret to the public.
i am sure ANNI is a much smater guy than all these guys put together.
ANNI knows that general public is behind him and its easy to throw those guys if need be.

Qasim and Hassan Saeed can claim thats its they who helped Anni to win the election

Qasim's emotional speech with the 'thuru thuru alhaa' effect was quite potent to play with the emotions of a country where fleeting emotions rule over rational thinking.

Hassan Saeed along with Jameel was also instrumental in securing a win for Anni by using the same tactic as Gasim.Jameel's fabricated document and the horror story generated from that piece of paper was quite effective

Sheikh Ilyaas's intellectually bland but high pitched speeches were as powerful as Qasim's trembling side effects and the horror story invented by Jameel

Actually the cabinet posts should go to people like Ziyaatte', Mariya, Reeko Moosa, Zaki (yup, basically a crook but...), Afeef ... you get the idea?

Laugh all you want. When you are done laughing, think about what loyalty means.

"strategic mistakes"- that's the gist of this article. The idea being consolidating MDPs hold on power, and effectively nullifying potential future candidates....After all the best offense is often a good defense!

Gasim Ibrahim is a malignant affliction this country cannot be rid of. And there is no doubt he has nothing to offer to the new government that would benefit it's citizens.

Hassan Saeed does have much to offer, so this equation of him with gasim means only that both are perceived by MDP as potentially destablising an MDP formed government. So this has hardly anything to do with the fear of greed, corruption or preventing a plutocracy from forming eh. (why else would you equate gasim with hassan?)

The fact remains that 54% did not vote for just Anni & MDP. period.

But I agree if the people you have stated here are given these portfolios, it amounts to a repeat of history, where portfolios are given "vedhummah"......So yes cabinet posts need to be assigned based on capacity, caliber, experience etc.
But this would mean going against democratic principles and the coalition consensus- it would mean betraying those people who are being these respective leaders in the hope of a supposed "greater good". So at the end of the days it all boils down to self-interest, money, wealth, power- and more power.....

Our plight will not be any different from our next door neighbor,we will squabble amongst ourselves over power. AND NOTHING WILL CHANGE FOR THE PEOPLE, ATLEAST NOTHING FOR THE BETTER...

yayyy, maumoon has been ousted. welcome to aneh raaje, it's the same as kureege raaje, only its been planted yellow.

Another perfect example of why a monetary based political system does not and will not ever work, unless we have centuries of colonialism derived weath n subjugation to back it up; that way atleast everyday people also get something while the ruling elite perpetuate their grip on power(as in the first world)

So, far us trying out this system seems to be working rather well

    Good luck to Anni

Awww c'mon anonymous. What's wrong with Ziyatte??? I mean in comparison to people like Umar Zahir, Ilyas Ibrahim, Abdulla Hameed, Gasim Ibrahim, that silly fux Kuda Saheed, Adubarey ... the list goes on. All people who held one or more portfolios in Maumoons cabinet. All who were jokers and had no idea about what the peoples needs were, in terms of running a government. Part of the golden age of "trial & error"

So tell me, what's so wrong with Ziyaatte? Atleast the guy would know how to organize one grand party!!! Matter of fact he should be given the MMA Governor post. Why? He get's to put his signature on new money! That's why.

  16. I point to be made is that i win was secured by a coalition, some agreements were signed and coalition expects Anni to back up his words. But i think it was Hassan Saeed and Ibra who supported him Unconditionally.

Its not only the executive gov that MDP should secure. Ibra still could stay in the parliament although he would be great to have him in the cabinet, the legislature is important too. Remember this is not a parliamentary system. Maybe Hassan Saeed could run for the parliament too content Mavota Shareef for the post.
MDP should save great personalities to take up seats in the parliament too.

Another important point to be mad is that everyone in Jumhoori party is corrupt to the bone, or power hungry. Gasim power Hungry, ADK guy totally corrupt even in gayyooms gov, Jabir and the Wife Diyaana same Story as ADK. No wonder all the corrupt bastards flocked to jumhoori party.

Anni i sure do hope you dont screw it all.

And I never put Ziyaatte in the same league as Gasim. Far as I'm concerned he's better than Gasim.

This looks like a jolly crooked & corrupt cabinet lineup. It's all there in Sandhaanu - the new lineup. Guess Anni's time as president will be over very soon. Or at least his popularity.

anni can't please everybody. but it will be wise if when he assigns portfolios he should not give a post to a person who was in that office before. for example, majority of staff at foreign ministry don't want dr shaheed as their new minister. it is because of the way dr shaheed behaved towards staff earlier. so if anni has to give him a post, then give him something like Fisheries Ministry. Likewise, if Dhiyana has to be appointed to the cabinet, it should not be as Attorney General. Because the staff at AG Office doesn't like the way she was given promotions before. Assigning tourism to Sawadh is a mistake. Even if Jumhooree Party wants 3 cabinet posts, they should not get tourism. Why? Because most leaders in Jumhooree Party are from tourism industry. So if they can control tourism ministry then it will lead to conflict of interest. Just two nights ago Sawadh was having coffee at Salsa Cafe with Dr Shaugee and Mr Waheed from tourism ministry. Don't you see the links already? Sawadh will be corrupt to the bone. Even if Dr Waheed's party wants 3 cabinet posts, Dr Waheed should come up with someone better than Sarangu Adam Maniku. Just because Sarangu played an important role in the campaign, he shouldn't be gifted with a cabinet post.

Mohamed Nasheeds government will fail and DRP will win the next election. My opinions are as follows.
DRP is not finished and it will never be finished. DRP will surely can come back if the current government fails in governance and establishing rule of law. There are reasons to think it can fail. First of all the face of Anii government is a to the core corrupted man Mr. Zaki. Other indication of its failure is Jmohooree party. Jomhooree party consists of Hooligans who are there to protect their interests using the alliance as the platform. ADK nashid is there to prolong his Hospital wich he won without being undergoing any legal process. The another thing is that if Hassan joins the government and becomes a puppet of Anni, this government will fail and he will become a political casualty and the scenario will be DRP winning the next election.

Jabir is there to win more bids and expand his unfair trade where hundreds of maldivians are treated like slaves in his company. Sawaadh is there to get more kick backs for his family business which is currently going bankrupt and Gasim became the savior. Most of Jmohooree and Adaalath axis of evil are going to hunt down our state of economy to the ruin if Mohamed Nasheeds government fails ruling the nation accordingly to the values of modern democracy.

"The most disturbing suggestion on their list was Dr. Ahmed Shaheed to be the Foreign Minister in the new cabinet. It is worth recalling his actions and words while he was the former Foreign Minister in the Qayyoom regime. He gave an interview to BBC in 2005, saying, “Qayyoom is the father of democracy in Maldives.” The following year he obtains the nickname “Dr. Janaazaa” as he arrogantly declared on local media “MDP would have its own funeral” if its leaders went ahead with the mass gathering planned to take place in Artificial Beach in 2006. Besides such controversial statements, he was responsible for various other matters. He abused his power when appointing personnel to the Permanent Mission of Maldives in Geneva and Brussels, by selecting a former employee of Hill and Knowlton and his friend to the respective posts. He choose his relatives and close friends to diplomatic missions abroad and brought in people who were not educated in the foreign relations. One such example is a mechanical engineer, who happens to be his brother-in-law who got transfer to a diplomatic mission, while there were plenty of educated people within the ministry for the said job."

many maldivians are still of the opinion that Gayoom is a father of democracy. Gayooms part in establishing democracy can not be denied. Shaheed was also right at that time about mdps funeral. MDP would be a finished thing if it attempted to overthrow the regime violently.

    Who doesn't know Zak?
Who doesn't know the 2 Docs?
Who doesn't know the Guru from Afganistan?
    Finally who doesn't know Anni?
All corrupt ( exception anni), power hungry, one time chosen "yes men" who have bled this country dry, now suddenly repackaged into modern day saints.

Look carefully and you would see many crooks, with some either on the bottle ( U know which face I reffer to) or zonked (?), who made their fortunes by grants of monopolies or limitless favours by who is refered to as the father of democracy by Dr. Ahmed Shaeed. What a Laugh!!!!!!

Lets face it. We the majority in this country has been taken for a huge ride by the one time "FRONT" of a huge operation of the diversion of public funds - The Villa Mafia and money laundering enterprise.

Lets face it. We are in the process of giving birth to a literal Medusa head in what we call Ithihaadu. Thats the name of the game.... Millions spent to hoodwink the majority.

Lets all pray, that Anni has a sword to cut off its head.

    Suggestions to Anni..
I wish that there was some one to put an analytic judgement in maumoon's wen he formed the cabinet.

I think the 1st that Anni need to do is hold the "freedom of press", nd arrest ppl lik Bushry. nd the media shud only publicise anni supporting articles(no anti, no neutral).Seize Aafathis nd giv the place to Ziyatte.Any1 hu writes anything against anni shud b labelled "Baaqeen".

The 2nd thing he should do is stop this multi party system.Any political act against anni shud be considered terrorising.

The 3rd thing is appoint the cabinet. Here the professional thing to do wud b to appoint ppl from his family nd close friends circle.

This way he can get a 99% in the next election.

Comments on the proposed new cabinet: Ali Hashim for Finance is not a bad choice. Aminath Jameel for Health is ok but I believe she could have first been the Deputy and later promoted as the Minsiter. Dr.Didi as the Fisheries Minsiter is baffling. Maybe he will put teeth in all tuna fish and braces on all sharks and introduce a teeth polishing and dental service for aracnut-schewing fishermen! Defence for Amin Faisal is ok. Housing for Aslam is also ok. Home Affairs for Gasim is ok but it could be destabilising. That post should be cahnge within the first six months of the presidency I believe. Toursim for Sawad would be a disaster!!!!!!!!! Attorney general for Dhiyana is ok but I guess it would have been better if she started off as Deputy. Islamic Affairs for Dr.Majeed is ok. Education for Dr.Musthafa would be a hilkarious targedy - wait and see. He won't last six months there. Trade for Sarangu Adam Maniku will be a comedy. (ask Dr.Waheed to explain why he had to do this). Foreign for Dr.Shaheed is ok. Justice for Dr.Jameel is ok. Youth and Human Resourcxes for Latheef is also ok.

Gayoom may deserve some credits for some handful of activities like combating illiteracy while he should be loathed for destroying S. Gan. My question to you is why the hell on earth Golhaa did not realize the economic importance of Gan infrastructure 30 years ago? Why did he waste it for 30 years without utilizing it for the people of Addu and the region? I know what it tells me. He is a racist son of bitch who hated equal opportunities for all the Maldivians.

The truth is Golhaabo doesn’t deserve a shit in the name of Maldivian people. Go hell dude.
In the past 30 years the per capita income of some of most poverty stricken countries have increased from 150 dollars to 590 dollars despite coups and blood shed. Many experts say this rate of increase do not represent any sort of development and the Maldives nourished by Golhaabo fall into this category too because more than 40 percent of the population earn less than a dollar a day.
Similarly the development and the metropolitan status you are giving to Gayoom as a demonstration of development is utter rubbish. In the past many years Golhaabos regime has done nothing for the common people. His only product of his governance during his regime was the birth of a new group of people who called themselves resort owners who are now controlling the entire wealth of the country. On the other hand, its not a secret that he is responsible for murder, rape, pillage and destruction of people and communities across the country who used to voice against him. This kind of a person who is a shedder of innocent peoples blood should be locked up in a jail.

  42. Bushry,
You are way off your mark when making judgment on me. When you say that Ibra is "holding on to his share" of cabinet, you are quite ill-informed.

Fact is, I, or Liberal Party has not asked for ANY share of cabinet. In fact, when we pledged support for Nasheed's candidacy, I specifically said that I (or the Party) was NOT seeking anything in return, that it was unconditional, and simply because Qayyoom was not an alternative at all.

In fact, Liberal Party or I have not been consulted in any way or form in the forming of the cabinet or other government matters, but the Party has been given one portfolio, which we accepted to convey solidarity to the public. Nothing more, nothing less. We would be perfectly happy to sit on the sideline and watch.

I very respectfully request you to remove my name from the company of the those seeking to "get a share of the cabinet", because I, or the Liberal party are not seeking anything.

In fact, this "power sharing" formula, I believe, will prove to be totally unworkable and a disaster.

    Thank you,
    Ibra

Gayoom dosent deserve any credit for anything. Look and the majority of Maldivens in the islands and male' they are selling their votes for 500, this is the education he gave this the awareness he created, for the majority of ordinary people in the country the dorrs for education was closed, even for the ones that go the chance for education he created barriers like JC, and expelling students and recruiting children for army services and office work while they only got education up to the level of grade 7 or completed grade 10. Up until recently Schools in islands had only levels up to grade 5 or 7.

This is his philosophy, keep the masses uneducated so that they wont challenge his power base and presidency.

Did you know that she was one of the people who spent most of the last week of campaigning sending SMSs claiming that Anni is a Christian and the MDP would build churches? Are you advocating that she be given a cabinet post?

Get real Bushry...I agree with most of what you write but NO WAY should Aishath Shiham remain in the cabinet. She is hard-core golhaa and should be dumped out with golhaabo himself.

Anni should not under estimate himself too. Without Anni this could not have been achieved. So MDP deserves to have the dominant say.

Any one who does not keep to the MDP party line in Ithihaadhu would better have his bag packed and ready to leave. if only there was a written agreement this situation would have been avoided..

Here is what Anni really needs to do to avoid disaster.

    1. Appoint people who appeal to the silent majority of maldivians. Not ithihaadhu. Ithihaadhu joined Anni because they had no choice.
    Only najority matters.

    2. Give people a sense of stability by electing technocracts to the cabinet.

    3. Choose a core team of Economists and policy managers with experience and good performance. Also they should be working as a team ( why not take the old team who left Maumoon such as Arif Hilmy, Adam Maniku, Solah Shihab, Jaleel and Mujthaba)

    4. Dont get trapped by past hate and distance from hatemongering MDP activists.

I would not be surprised if this were true. The guy sure has a superiority complex issue, in addition to a huge ego.

He's a mirror image of despot king Maumoon. Anyone in his right mind would stay well away from him. True, Anni did win the election with the votes from Sissy's advocates. However that is history now. Anni better get rid of these 3 Maumoon loving doctors if he knows whats good for him.

We voted for a hopefully better change, not a change that might potentially be disastrous to the people of Maldives. It would be wise for all potential ministers to remember this reality.

dr. hassan saeed, throwing tantrums at this crucial moment is not going to get us anywhere. show us you love maldives and that you are not a power hungry person by sticking to your own words (your support with mdp is/was unconditional). by the way i think ibra would make a good education minister instead of mustafa luthfy (too mild to tackle the real problems facing the education sector). however, it seems ibra has decided to watch the show from the sidelines. i feel a bit let down by his announcement.

  66. Ibra, you have written that I am “way off your mark” when making judgment on you. And you went on to say that I am “ill-informed”. You say that your party has not asked for ANY share of cabinet. If you are going to “sit on the sideline and watch,” then why did you accept this cabinet portfolio? This “watching from the side lines” is a dangerous thing. I respect you Ibra, but we are not looking for leaders who want to watch from the sidelines. Finally, you wrote: “this "power sharing formula will prove to be totally unworkable and a disaster”. Now that statement shows a lot about the way you think, Ibra. I have a feeling that you may eventually get out of this coalition and enter a coalition with DRP. The way you campaigned to delay the election also was counterproductive to the aspirations of the people. Though I respect you, I have my reservations about your “liberal” tag and your political affiliations which are murky at best. Need glasses "Shafeena"? Or are you just a Sissy Saeed supporter calling yourself a female name like Latheefa? "Anonymous 8.57" indeed. I rather like my nick "Island Kid" - use that in the future. It's easier.

Oh, and no matter how much you scream about it Hassan Saeed is a wuss. This is not personal jealousy btw. (S)he's someone who came out with a manifesto that had rather good ideas, BUT ideas that were way off mark and no way to implement. So hows he any more smarter than Maumoon or Anni and their manifestos. See, the way I see it a LOT of stupid individuals voted for Maumoon over the years. The same trend I saw with the voters in the 1st round who voted for Saeed. Believe it or not, teenage girls voted for him because he's the loveliest candidate. Hehehe! Hows this any different from all those screaming fans of Indian drama man watzhisname Bajaaj????

I have good ideas too. Hows this? I say why not build another Large Hadron Collider underwater in the Maldives with the ring interconnected via the islands? Or hows about a Space Elevator with the base station right on top of Theemuge? Really good ideas eh? Ideas with really good benefits too. But where's the money and how the hell do I implement these???

I do however confess I have a rather huge dislike for any character who used to be with dictator Maumoon earlier and created a lot of havoc for us Maldivians ... and then somehow manages to grow another big mouth when they fall from grace. The 3 good for nothing doctors are an extreme example of that.

I'd again call on Anni to steer clear of this wuss Hassan Saeed. He's trouble. No good came out of his earlier alliances, eg. Maumoons government.

Oh and I'm very proud of the fact that you "studied psychology for many years". Congratulations. You've analyzed me fully.

We do ot want him. Anni u r gonna fail soon if u try to please people. u have to b firm in ur decisions, say NO wen u have to say . don't ask us citizens to bear up with waever u come up with to please ur people. besides all this, u won the election with the help of the alliance. specailly u got vote from addu because of hasan saeed. a truth remains a truth whether u deny it o not. u have bn tryin to show an image to the people anni, n now the image is quite blurr. coz u gotto please people like afeef n maria. We the majority in the education sector do not want mustafa as our minister. we agree to disagree with this decision. mustafa bn amal's uncle things r gonna get worse as she is the permananet secretary. we got a lot of things to b changes in the education centre. we need to replace the incompetent heads who tri to please everyone n ultimately r failures. we need to bring a balance between the education system across the country. The first picture that u r gonna show to us is ur cabinet. now that we get all these information from unconfirmed sources. we r waiting to see the real picture soon. Believe me anni, if u fail to draw this picture n project it to us clearly then u have failed. now things seem to b smooth to our eyes, but in the near future there wud b lot of turbulance n its gonna b rough for sure. we did not vote u to please ur party memebers. we voted u to bring about the necessary changes to our country. we voted for change. n do not give maumoon chance to criticise n mock u on ur cabinet.

Truth be told, yes, I have the same dislike for him too. But he has been with Anni for a long time (and so far loyal) and it's his calling. If I were Anni I'd have long deposed of him too. But why keep on repeating mistakes? By that I mean, why bring in more earlier Maumoon lovers.

I think I should make clear that I also voted for Anni. Don't agree with some of the sentiments here regarding Anni & the Ganjaa culture. Anni did do a lot of good for me personally. His (and certain others) sacrifices opened doorways that would otherwise remain shut for a very long time. Like certain freedoms that came into effect. Oh, the constitution itself is still a real mess and needs to be cleaned up. It was Maumoon vs Anni - and Maumoon NEVER did any good for me.

    Island kid,

    Good day :)

Lets say if you were maumoonu, would you just wake up one day and announce 'alright from today onwards, there will be freedom of expression' ? Or you would do only when certain types of pressure builds up?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Anonymous5/11/08 15:21

Oh trust me, if I were Maumoonu as you say, I'd openly support freedom of expression from day one & not just when the pressure builds up.

But, hey, I'm not Maumoonu and he's not me either :)

I take a lot of criticism myself and don't like a lot of it either. But I've always valued it. And will fight back if it does not go along my line of thinking. That's the biggest difference here.

I would not tear down peoples houses just 'cas people criticized me or because of a number of people suddenly became blabbermouths. I would however tear down peoples houses if they mess up my personal space and become a nuisance to the general public. A good eg. would be these bomb blasting Islamic terrorists starting to colonize this country. I don't mind the preachings. I preach too - but when they start to terrorize and enforce things, now that's where I disagree ....

But again, that's just me ;)

    Island kid

    Good response :)

I am wondering why a country called America which is as old as 200 years has to wait this long to have a black president. How long they have to wait to elect a woman ruler?

So if Maumoonu can give 'freedom of expression' in thirtys I say its not bad either.Remember when he came to power he didnt start anew.As Bushry said,Maumoonu continued from where Nasir left in terms of economic development.Maumoonu himself was a victim of Nasir's draconian laws when he got banished for criticising Nasir's policies.Plus the torturing system in jails are also a continuation of what Nasir left behind.A nation simply does not change 360 degrees overnight.

During Maumoon's reign 'freedom of expression' was introduced gradually.During his early years, there was a minister called Shihaab in his cabinet who could crack a joke or two.

The next progression came after Nov 3,1988 when Sangu news and Hukuru were introduced and media had an opportunity to grill ministries every month or so.But Sangu and Hukuru was not productive,it was an all out attack on government and full of excessive praise for Nasir

The next progression came when weekly glamourous magazines came into picture.During this phase,if you remember, there was a magazine called 'Monday Times' which was always at odds with ADK's exhorbitant prices,Dhiraagu's high internet rates, and Stelco for running a football.

Good points. But ... you will agree that in the America that you talk of FoE has been around from almost day one unlike us. And when you talk about a black president and how long it took for them to accept one ... it is the PEOPLEs will NOT to accept a black president. Voters decided right?

When we talk of FoE here & 30 years, that is an aggression by a few (in our case a mad dictator & his followers) towards the people. Not the other way around.

BTW, remember, Barack Obama is only partially black. Now that's bound to mean something ;)

Speaking of which I sincerely believe Barack will have no problem coming up with a good cabinet that will work with him for the good of the people, unlike the bunch of power hungry crooks here who still does not seem to agree that it's sometimes OK to do something for the everyman. ALL FOR ONE, & MORE FOR ME seem to be the current tagline with these bastards.

I support and shall ALWAYS support Maumoon first and foremost because he is and has ALWAYS been a people's man. Never has he EVER had anything but a kind word and a smile for anyone. He is our first leader/President who made himself approachable to the common man. He taught us that that even a president is human as well as humane. Thirty years in power had not affected his inborn humble demeanour at all. The aura of quiet dignity and sheer integrity that exudes from him gains the trust of and wins the heart of everyone that he meets. Those qualities along with his natural geniality commands even those who strive to blacken his name to be respectful in his presence. He built this country from scratch at a time when the people had all but given up on what we so readily and proudly call "our beloved nation" today. He is the person who envisioned the true potential that was hidden in our sleepy decrepit islands. His faith in the true worth of our motherland drove him to work tirelessly and valiantly to transform our existence from a mere speck in the Indian ocean into the modern metropolitan hub that we see today. It from the seeds sown by him that we harvested the fruits that we are now enjoying. He made singing national songs and sporting our flags into "hip" culture. He is the person who deserves the real credit for instilling this new found patriotism in our hearts. Maumoon is simply the best "veriyegge rivethi thassavaru" that we have had in our history! However much people try to hide, deny and defy it, he still remains as "Gaumuge hungaanugaa hunnavan emme ekasheegenvaa molhu keyolhu".Thank you for holding our hands during the transition period where we were crawling before we could walk. Some of us may have chosen to forget or overlook this detail (surprising how easily Maldivians can alter their memories at will to suit their own ends and means!), but I assure you that there are MANY among us who still remember and recognize that fact. God is a witness to the truth that we support and that is sufficient for us! NO ONE can erase the name of MAUMOON ABDUL GAYOOM from Maldivian history. Maumoon, please do not give up on us just yet. Please do not let the dogs and vultures take away everything that we have ALL worked together to create. Please do not let these people violate the sanctity of our motherland just as easily as they have managed to cloud our sense of righteousness. They have betrayed and shamed us by their petty greed and ignorance. Please forgive those of us who have succumbed have to their immediate craving for materialistic gains because they not know any better. Please do not let our sweat and blood all go to waste-PLEASE HELP US SAVE OUR BELOVED WATHAN from these crooks. Today, we appeal to you because in addition to being the father of democracy, YOU ARE ALSO THE FATHER OF A NATION! Please do not desert us in our hour of need. We may have lost a battle, but together we can win this war!!!

And just so you know I don't find Hassan Saeed attractive. But I can tell you one person who did find him attractive. Maumoons brother Abdulla Hameed ;)

Look! I'm making all this fuss about Hassan Saeed 'cas I find him repulsive and I wish Anni would have the common sense to not make him part of his cabinet. I've given more than enough reasons as to why he'd be a liability to Anni if he goes the Hassan Saeed way.

Now please let's focus on someone else in this so called coalition cabinet.

I still say Ziyattey would make a good MMA Governor.

Wow! You are a rather endangered specis just like the Dodo. A maumoonist. Anyway its amusing reading your post. And I must add that I enjoyed the Ibra post and Bushri response.

We live in hilarious times. Check this out..... Here is a sweet President to be, who represents a party after winning the General election; then dishes out his ministries in such a way that the only conclusion could be that His Excellency the president and his party is a junior partner in his own Government. When the time is right THE BOAT WOULD BE ROCKED --- stealing the master rep's words. Ibra for once in his life has stumbled on to the truth. But temptaion is hard to resist. A typical politico.

    + MDP has 5 seats out of 14. -
    Gasim gets ( 4+3+1) 8 altogether.
    + The Doc gets 2 -
+ Ibra with his mere 0.75% gets 1. ( He might be happy with ½ though, judging from his post.)
At that point ............ everyone realizes that the maths is all wrong ( At todays 13.00 hrs soap). However the master rep, wriggles out of the difficulty. And now we wait in limbo for a miracle. Thank God! in politics miracles are quite common - Where oil mixes with water, and where black is white and 60,000 MRf means empty seats.

Looks like Gasim the great monpolist ( monopolies granted by his one time master – latest was...Western Union outlet) with his 15% is the undisputed de facto president.

Thats what, one could call the back door access to the presidency. The potential conflict of interest that this poses goes from fishing, tourism, to all forms of trade. Hail Gasim! The mater of atolls, mas of tourism and add to the bargain the cops too.

Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the power! Only hope is for His Excellency Anni to Wake up, and REAL FAST. I really enjoy the 13.00 Hrs session. Gosh! What a job that is! Now I know what to be a weasel is.

Guys! It stinks. What did I do to deserve this?

island kid. yourelf is a dick. why im saying this. in dhivehi raaje we make insulting nicknames when we are jealoused with someone or when whne we want to assassinate a character like DO Sappe did to Golhaabo. May be you are one of student of Sappe. Sappe invented the names like latheefaa, Golhaabo and now we are inventing names like Ganjaa force, bullhebay force and so on. wait and see people will make nicknames of unimaginable scales.By the way Dr. Hassan Saeed is the only wise man capable of leading a government.

its obvious to me Anni can not rule on democratic basis. it seems Zaki is having the power. so far mr.anni is unable to come out from his hiding hole to give a public speech. it seems next government will be marred by people like zaki who doesn’t have any words in his dictionary except the word corruption. The biggest power brokers in aani government are mdp financial pumpers like Ali shiyaam and Hmazaa. Ali and Hmazaa are staunchly trying to negate a democratic process that coalition is trying to establish by advocating to exclude the new maldives group from power sharing. ths is ludicrous and undemocratic because Anni has no mandate to exclude the new maldives team for his cousins husbands personal vendetta. let the democratic process take the shape based on peoples mandate not based on nepotism and cronyism of Mohamed nasheeds extended family.

bushree its not "Aneema Mudhaa". U shoud correct the mistake next time. And its not "Ganeema Mudhaa "even. It "Ghaneema Mudhaa" please correct the mistake.

I am a teacher. I think Dr. musthapha luthufee is not the right person to appoint as a Minister of Education. I think Ibra would be the best. Plz Anni don't appoint Dr. Musthapha as our minister. plx plx plx plx. "Shaznen"

This is an interesting article. The number of comments prove that the subject is one of interest to many. Here is my take :

1 - Regradless of whether one says he/she voted for "Iththihaadh", that cannot be. There were only two names, 1 - Maumoon, and 2 Nasheed.

2 - Our constitution and Election laws do not allow anything in exchange for support during campaign. Hence the Opposition parties who supported Anni (probably expecting returns), have no way to demand for it. The Constitution specifically gives this power to the President. In addition, remember the infamous "DRP & PA Agreement" and the arguments made against it? Same argument applies here.

3 - Maldivians do not vote for a party for Presidency. While parties endorse candidates, it is the candidate we choose, and the Candidate has the option to take appoint the most efficient and capable cabinet.

4 - Don't talk about not analysing Maumoon's cabinet. That is one of the reasons people wanted change, they wanted to be able to discuss these issues openly.

My advice to Anni. Choose a Cabinet from capable people who you can trust. That is one of the most important priorities in a Cabonet, while they may not agree with you on everything, you should be able to trust the.

Good Luck, I know this will be a huge challenge for you.

  105. Some people accuse me of trying to promote Addu people as ministers; but this blog-post should perhaps convince such people that I have no such agenda. The four appointments that I have criticised are all from Addu, i.e. Dhiyana (Addu Atoll), Dr. Didi (Addu Atoll); Dr. Musthafa (Addu Atoll) and Sawad (half Adduu).

Some people also accuse me of trying to bring only PhD holders to the cabinet. My criticism of appointing Dr. Musthafa Luthfee as Education Minister perhaps shows that having a PhD alone doesn't qualify someone to be minister!

One reader accused me of supporting Dr. Hassan Saeed. This isn't true. Actually I strongly argue against holding a mid-term election in 15 months (as proposed by Dr. Hassan). I think Anni should get minimum four years. Within this period he should amend the constitution to make the length of the presidential term as four years! The same should be done for the length of the Majlis, so that will hold presidential and parliamentary election every four years.
