Where is the Vice President?

Since the election of Nasheed as President we have barely heard Vice President Dr. Waheed talk (even at a small press conference). Dr. Waheed is often seen standing behind Nasheed (like a poodle) when Nasheed conducts certain ceremonies. What we are seeing is Ibrahim Hussain Zaki (the Special Envoy of the President) taking a more central stage.

Zaki is seen to be playing the role of the Vice President and the real Vice President is seen to be a personal assistant to the President (more like a secretary). I would bet my humble possessions that Zaki is more powerful in the government than the Vice President.

I respect Zaki and I appreciate the role he played in maintaining the strength of MDP during hard times too. But I think it will be folly for President Nasheed to listen to Zaki’s every word as if that’s a revelation! Zaki is a relic from Gayyoom’s old regime, and despite whatever good that he may have done, we will never be able to cut ourselves from the past and soar to new heights as long as we are anchored to the past by people such as Ibrahim Hussain Zaki.

I don’t mind Zaki being in the government but I would like to see Dr. Waheed play a more apparent and effective role in the policy formulation and interact more with the people. I would also like to see Nasheed become more a man of his own rather than feel anchored by “personalities” such as Zaki, Gasim and even Mausoom!

  5. Bushry,

Let me make this clear, you maybe jealous of Zaki, but he is THE HERO of MDP. Who stood against the Dictator Gayoom and stepped out of his cabinet, he is person who does not like praising presidents. Waheed on the other hand is a figure head anyway (VP) the agreemnent made between MDP and waheed party was that he will except VP nomination, and that he will only be a figure head. In the same agreement it was agreed x number of cabinet posts will be given to waheed's party.

he cant complain Bushry, he has no room to complain.

ANNI & ZAKI RULES.....if you dont like it just shut up

The websites and MDP mouthpiece News paper didn’t want to criticize any of Annis mistakes, so they all decided to close down. They were not confident of giving us unbiased news coverage, they didn’t want to provide us both sides of the story, they didn’t want to serve the public as soon as Verikan was WON.

It is such a shame that all those websites and News Papers that were close down were affiliated with MDP and the Reformists. They were the people who called for freedom, democracy and Human Rights, They were the ones who called for free media, and called Golhaabo Propagenda. They forgot about reporting and journalism as soon as VERIKAN was won.

as Anni say Muniyaa Thakaa Kokaa Thakaa Fari Vaa… whatever. I guess those kokaa’s and Muniyaas are dead.

Credit goes to MDP for closing down the first news paper (Minivan News) under Annis reign. And Anni is suppose to be the Father of Free Media and journalism.

Now TVM seems like Annis propaganda machine….. and MDP seems comfortable with the… and are not complaining or doing anything to give a balanced view.

Maldivians are so blind..Why complain now Bushry? and i thought you voted for change not to soar for new heights. You got change of president like all the blind Maldivians..Its Villa Maldives remember.

Bloody liar.... Zaki(MDP) lied to get votes....if they lie over votes.... then they can lie over many many matters. Mr Zaki you better explain the truth about what you were telling regarding the 80million gayoom stole.

Tell Zaki to stand aside and Anni take control of that Gasim, he will destroy your reputation with his greed for power and money.

Gasim delayed the coalition process because; he first contacted Gayoom to form a coalition with DRP. Cheap shot was willing to tie the knot with Gayoom to get to verikan. We are left to deal with these Republican wolves because didn’t agree to form a coalition with them.

  18. Was it then Zaki the tru architect behind the circus surrounding President Nasir's death?

Where were the so called Adalth scholars who apparently are the people who adviced President Nasheed in matters such as this? As Bushri seems to be suggesting, WHO IS ADVICING WHOM? WHERE ARE WE HEADING?

Do we really imagine we did President Nasir any favours, in his death? Do we really believe that President Nasir benefited one bit from the extraordinary circus around his death? If not President Nasir, who benefited in this tragic tale of betrayal in his death?

Do you realise that poor President Nasir is probably the only Maldivian since we accepted Islam some 800 years ago, who had the indignity and poor fortune to have his body subjected to such abuse as his body probably did - The use of chemicals, needles, knives and saws to delay burial. What was his crime that he had to undergo such ignominy in death? - Setting up an innovation, that clearly smelt of immitating heathen customs.

President Nasir was a practicing Muslim. If so, do we imagine that HE WOULD HAVE ENTERTAINED his dead body treated the way it was?

What President underwent in death was what he would have probably described as tortue if he was living.

    SHAME ON US!!!!!!!!!

May Allah Give Peace to President Nasir.

    Amin!

  22. People are angry because the there is no opposition Media. Nothing can be force on to Haveeru or Miadhu. At least TVM, Radio Maldives, the Government mouthpieces can give a voice to the critics and discuss the current issues. But how cares about it now dho.

People are angry because Gasim and his band of wolves are running the show. This gasim cannot be trusted, MDP, Anni, Zaki, Maria they all told it during the first round of campaigning. But now they are giving the key to the safe to these pack of wolves, Defence, Tourism, Attorney General, and Religion Ministry, Trade Ministry is given to them. Bring Irba or Dr. Waheed to the forefront in running the coalition, devicing the policies, with Republicans it is bound to fail….and support for MDP will fall with it

I personally know have seen a cheque in favor of Zaki, the money was given to him by a relative of Gayoom/Yameen for campaigning purpose. When is MDP going to publish the list and figures of those who finance the campaign? Zaki said he will publish as soon as their accounts are audited? When is that time?

No one did any favor for anyone; MDP was financed by Govt funds, and private funds, everyone change we wanted. We voted for Maria, Anni and even Mavotaa (just Caz MDP approved him). Change doesn’t mean to sell out to Business men. What is Anni telling now, we also justice, people have stolen from the Govt coffers.

Is Anni side stepping from Justice as well ( Justice doesn’t mean lynching or hate crimes) Gayooms government must be brought to justice for killing people and stealing/misusing state funds.

  27. @15:06.
In the next five years, if Anni doesn't keep his promise and if there is no hand in mishandling votes which is very unlikely, then expect change of power. Be it DRP or any other party. DRP remains to be benefited from all the faults of Anni and is stil the party with the most supporters. Don't forget Ithihaadh was able to beat Maumoon by a small margin and that also because Maldivians succumbed to sweet talk by Ilyas.

  31. The Vice President's functions as stipulated in the Constitution is to assist the President and to be there to take over the country should the President passes away or is permanently incapacitated.

So, its up to the President to assign the VP any day to day functions. It is the same system in the US too. Dick Cheney might be a highly infuential VP but that has not been the case with other VPs in different administrations in the past.

Dr Waheed should be there to assist Anni if and when he asks. Anni is doing the right thing by giving a more prominent role to the dynamic and experienced Zaki to play an instrumental role in shaping policy and representing the President where necessary.

Right from the day the election was won, Zaki has been performing brilliantly. He has been a wise and experienced voice which bothers Gayyoomists who were hoping and praying for Anni to falter.

Forget it. No matter what you guys say Zaki is a loyal MDP top gun and he is the Special Envoy of our new President who will be more actively involved in the running of the government unlike Maumoon.

Keep us the good work Zaki!

  32. To the comment about ziyattey:

He could well be as powerful as a minister. He is working at the president's office as one of those many great secretaries, under-secretaries, deputy under-secretaries working [?] at the president's office. Ziyattey is anni's protocol head.

I work at the president's office and regard myself as a civil servant. Anni is giving jobs to these people like president's office is his harem.

Young kids who have just barely graduated from uni are landing there and working as our heads now. I have no problem with appointing political people. But it is disturbing to work under people who have less experience and lower education qualification.

Some of the executive director level political position people even haven't completed their undergraduate course. So I wonder if this creating jobs for people as Gayoom did.

A friend told me this is same shit coming from a different asshole.

Who gave the right to Pres. Nasheed to approve this. We are giving our money to a group of people who does nothing but hang around the ex president.

There are also 18 state minister level appointees. So much for a lean government. Will anyone talk about these things.

  49. Our president is now going crazy! We must stop him from making the stupid mistake of increasing lease period of tourist resorts to 50 years. This is stupid. The resorts are neither the properties of the government nor the operators. It's the investments that the operators own, not the islands on which these resorts are developed. They are the properties of Dhivehi Rayyithun! So the government can't simply increase the lease period without getting consent from the rightful owners of these resorts.

By increasing the lease periods you are actually making the rich richer and the poor poorer. I suggest that the maximum lease period is set at 15 years from the time of operation.

Mr.President, it's time you act on responsibly. It's never too late to listen the voices ordinary people like us.

Most of people who are above 65 years are buried in the graveyard.

Mr president if you want to help people then give a sum that they could live a respectable life. Do you want them to go begging after collecting the 2000 bucks to meet their monthly budget.

The Parliament is saying you can only live a respectable life with a salary of 100,000 per month, and you are saying old people can live a respectable life with a mere 2000 bucks per month.

You should increase that amount to 5000 minimum and reduce the age limit to 55 or retirement age, also include the disabled people and women who above 45 who cannot find/get work.

This blog is more informative, popular, more concrete than haveeru and other dailies from Maldives.
And its always a treat to read your articles.
We were so hungry for a change, we were all blinded by the change. Its not even a month, maybe Nasheed's governing coalition will have good things coming up.

  76. Some problems since Anni's election:

    1. A very stupid interview to Guardian.(e.g. made remarks that from a international political point of view is a blunder. he mentioned names of other countries: Indian HC said the reports sounded utterly 'far-fetched'. Bushry claims Anni's idea was inspired by him)

    2. Bad cabinet. (e.g. Why a fully fledged ministry of Islamic Affairs? Utter waste of money)

    3. Stupid political appointees (not only some of the cabinet, state and deputy ministers, but also some people appointed to the president's office. Also, who is this AAA Ali Shiyam as an economic advisor? who is Rado Zahir as chairman of STELCO? Rich becoming only richer?)

    4. Bad bunch of presidential appointees to the Majlis (e.g. no single woman representative)

    5. Besides, I haven't seen anything positive happening to my life so far. I still do not have the rights that I didn't have before 11 November. Still people who bring books such as the Bible are harassed, as if reading Bible is a sin and is going to convert you away from Islam. This regime is as repressive as Gayoom's regime between the period of August and November. Perhaps a far worse campaign of religious repression and harassment is underway. Inaya recently wrote about Sheik Fareed's misogynistic preaching.

    6. Also, the proposed 2000 Rufiyaa pension to the elderly is not a well thought-out policy either. For example, anyone who is unable to earn income should be in such a benefits scheme, not only people above 65. Plus, a person who is 65 can well be more able-bodied than a 35-year old who is disabled.

    7. I also don't like Anni's utilitarian calculations. The danger in such utilitarian calculus is that it can sacrifice some individuals' important rights for the 'most'. He used this for example in his remarks about diesel.

    8. Finally, what is this talk about resort land private ownership? Utterly unacceptable policy to me. We have to ensure wider and more just property rights in the means of production so that wealth is more equitably distributed and exploitation is minimized. But this is not surprising since apparently MDP is a 'conservative' party.

  81. Who is ruling Maldives really? Are MDP truth and justice for all fighting against oppression? Or are they the dispossessed Kerafa family, who after leading a few other dispossessed families in a military coup to win back the smaller business interests that the bigger greedy alliance of Kamine', Kolige' and Endherimage unjustly stole from them, failed to win militarily so sent Nephew Anni into the frontline with a new Gandhi like strategy to win their interests back? Or did the powers that be stage the whole thing because Kerafa family was corrupt and needed to be implicated in order to be taken out of the picture. No, these explanations are all too simple and stereotypical, all are allied to all now, who is really ruling, why, whose interests are being served? Are we too believe that that there is no longer clan competition in Maldives politics? Are we really united? Someone please tell me who is really controlling the show? Whose interests are being served? Is it pure truth?

  84. IF you want to know about the Vice President's role, look up the Constitution. Or if still in further doubts, check the US system. The VP's role is defined by the Constitution ..no more no less.

The Cabinet Ministers will be responsible to deliver performance from their ministries and the Special Envoy would perform tasks assigned to him by the President. These are not duties that Zaki takes upon himself. The President is the highest executive elected by the people and he has evey right and all the reasons to have a presence in problem areas after what he inherited from Maumoon.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The Maumoonists and Yameenists are not happy with the cabinet choices and some Chairmans appointed to the Boards of some state enterprises.

What qualification did Abdulla Hameed have to be Chairman of Bank of Maldives? Or Kuwaa Shafiu as Chairman of Dhiraagu? and all the DRP MPs who were given such posts in the Boards of other State Enterprises.

Rado Zahir is a successful entrepreneur and so is Soarey. We need practical people with business experience to clean the mess created by politicians who maniulated government companies and made them bankrupt.

Its not academics or so-called beyfulhu politicians that we need to lead these establishments. But shrewd businessmen who can turn around these loss-making entities. By sitting on the Board, they will make policy but will not be doing the day to day running. So question of corruption doesnt arise.

  90. I think the issue is Anni is getting influenced by Gasim. Gasim and the Republicans should be sidelined from the coalition and Dr. Waheed, Ibra and Hassan Saeed should be forefront of the coalition in policy/decision making. Gasim is a liability for the coalition. A bunch of bankrupt businessmen who want to get benefits for running their business. First it’s the 50 year lease, maybe the next thing is Jolly Jabir getting the Resorts Villivaru and Biyadhoo.

    ReplyDelete
  91. How contradicting policies this Govt is having, on side Anni is giving MRf 2000.00 to retired people who are above 65 years. This is a mere Mrf 66/- per day, to have meals, pay bills and meet their other needs. Anni came to power brandishing slogans such as ( People don’t have to beg Health Care). Does MDP expect people to have four square meals with 66 Rufiyaa per day? All this implies is that the Government is unable to take care of the senior citizens. Only thing they could give is MRf 2000/- per months to meet their food and shelter and other needs. So we are actually left with same old situation, after collecting their MRf 2000/- the senior citizens are left with no choice but to sit and beg behind the Theemuge.

But for resort owners these guys have a pretty good package they are getting almost free lease rights for 50 years without any increase in lease rentals. It all seems like they want to make the rich even richer. The irony is they are not increasing the lease rents from the resort. So the Universal, Villa and Champa is getting the 50 additional years at the same lease rent that was handed over to them 10-20 years ago.

With Zaki at the forefront of policy level; things are bound to happen like that. He being one of the most corrupted ministers to run Tourisms Ministry he made business investments to increase his assets. While most of the ordinary people die before they would build a decent room on their land plots, Zaki has build a 8 story building complex, & the whole bill was pocketed by Mr. Gasim the largest resort owner in the country.

Old people will have to beg in Anneh Dhivehi Rajje also.

    ReplyDelete
  92. After all the hard work is done, Anni is becoming the lap dog of Gasim and infringing the promises he made. Jobs are going to coffee buddies and lunatics, where are the
professionals you promised to include in your Government.

And Anni we dont need your miserly MRf2000 give it to Gasim and Jolly Jabir. It could be useful for them to build Jollys resort and Gasims Maamigili Airport.

WE DON’T WANT IT, KEEP THE MISERLY MRF2000/- WITH YOU, THIS IS JUST AN INSULT FOR THE OLD PEOPLE, DISABLED AND WOMEN. (WITH NO INCOME/JOB)

  93. @Anonymous 26/11/08 08:39

Hey am not a propagandist for DRP, I am a member of MDP. We must criticize Anni about his shortcomings. He is doing stupid things for eg. Who are these Ziyattey, Furahani Shuaib and Rado Zahir, we want to see professionals doing the job not some joker.

If Anni want to give a gift to Ziyattey, Furahani Shuaib and Rado Zahir for their support then give it out from his own salary. But he is bringing these people and giving them jobs at public expense.

Whether Anni does it or Gayoom does it, a wrong is a wrong, and we dont want to be a YES man to everything Anni does.

  94. The Opposing voices here are not necessarily Maumoon or DRP supporters. I am a member of MDP and a supporter of Anni from the beginning, but there are valid points here and same concerns i share. We are not going to stay aside and let Anni do whatever he wants. WE do not LOVE him like Mumoon supporters did to him. WE like anni and respect him but if he is misled it is our responsibility and right to voice our concerns.
Mr President, we understand its difficult to please everyone and especially with the kind of pressure you have around you, but please make the decisions for people. Do not please Gasim or any other for today, while you can be the hero you have been by delivering your campagne promises genuinely.
I wish you good luck and strength and wisdom.

  100. Why you have to mention that Shuaib is Furuhani? I am not Furuhani, but I have nothing but respect for Furuhani. They are the humblest, most serving gentle people, never aspired for power only aspired to serve Maldives no matter who the Sultan or President was. Furuhani is not Be'fulhu arrogance. Whatever Shuaib has taken from Anni whether it is right or wrong leave clans out of it individuals make decisions not clans. This prejudice based on class, clan, island has to eradicated from Maldivian psyche, if Shuaib took somethng it is because it was Shuaib not because it was a Furuhani.
