Nasiriyya Park, Nasir Gulzar, Velaanaa Building for Nasir (and a post for Ismail Nasir)!

As a nation we collectively betrayed President Nasir. Former President Gayyoom was the one who vilified and mocked Nasir. He misled us into doing this cruel act. When the new government of Nasheed got the chance to repair some of the damage, the government showed courage and humbleness in offering Nasir a state funeral. Following are some points that we can ponder after this sad goodbye to a national hero.

1. Rename the Sultan Park as “Nasiriyya Park”!

Remove the boundary wall of Sultan Park, landscape the park and make it a central park with free access to people. This is an area frequented by tourists with close proximity to the new National Museum as well. Also include at least one newspaper-stand which sells magazines, light snacks and soft drinks in the park. We can then rename the park as “Nasiriyya Park”!

2. Rename the park where Nasir is buried as “Nasir Gulzar”!

President Nasir is buried inside the small park at the eastern end of the old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskth). It would be most appropriate to name this small park as “Nasir Gulzar”!

3. Name the office building being built at Velaanaage as “Velaanaa Building”!

Velaanaage is ex-president Nasir’s own house. But Gayyoom virtually banished Nasir from the country in 1978. Nasir had to spend the last 30 years of his life in exile, in Singapore. During this period Gayyoom confiscated Nasir’s house (Velaanaage) and is now building an office block at the site. The 15-storey office block being built at Velaanaage can now be renamed, most appropriately, as “Velaanaa Building”.

4. Offer a post to Nasir’s youngest son – Ismail Nasir!

Ismail Nasir (Nasir’s youngest son) is the one who accompanied Nasir and took most care of him, especially during the last years of his life. For this reason, and also to keep Nasir’s name in the service of this motherland, I would suggest that the new government should offer some kind of post to Nasir’s family – specifically to Ismail Nasir. Ismail Nasir may not live here so this post could be perhaps served in a foreign country. I would suggest that Ismail Nasir could be made the Maldives Government Ambassador to Singapore. If that’s not appropriate then he could be made “Special Advisor to the President (on foreign investment and trade)” who resides in Singapore!

  1. may our former president rest in peace.
i've always wanted to know y late Nasir refrained himself from visiting his motherland. n last night wen i was watching the live coverage from TVM, kuva mohamed manik in an interview explained the reason. its not surprising to see things getting unfold n maumoon's evilness revealed.he cud b one's foe but he shud not b soo inhumane

  2. i liked the first three points, buts i think its crazy to give a post to Ismail Nasir. Government posts should not be handed over to people out of sympathy. Bush, sometimes u sound like a kid.

  3. giving post to ismail is not something you should suggest, instead it is something Anni should suggest and offer if he believe that capable. Renaming "Sultan park" to nasiriyya park is not a good idea even. it is ok to name velaanaage office complex as velaanaa building and i think it is already decided by the gov.

Well I (Bushry) or anyone else can "sugegst" things to the president. Do u think Nasheed owns us or is it the other way round where he is our servant. If he is our servant then we can at least "suggest" things to him.

  8. I would like to see Nasir hounored. But Mr. Bushree, how did you forget what has happened during Nasir's time. Remember he had 54 houses and shops in this tiny Male? He intriduced tourism to Maldives. True. But in your good style why dont you ask this question? Did any one in the whole population of Maldives get even a single Dollar? The answer is NO! Nasir was the sole benefiter of the toursim industry. The pioneers of the industry would say YES, to this, because they KNOW!
And Maumoon didnt banish him, he ran away, because he felt the tension building up in the Maldives. You may forget, but how can he himself forget what he did!

  12. Vellaanaa Building is ok, but why do you want to rename a place that already has a name, increase the burden of top heavy Government? Ismail Nasir didn’t come to stay hear or asking for money, already have a better home and they have ways to earn income. Already Anni is giving jobs left and right, a job to Furahani Shuaib, Ziayd, who knows may be the next in line is Sappe and that “white haired artist”.

These people are not good, even that Sawad, he will be just like another Musthfa Luthfee in Tourism Ministry.

We need people who are educated but also they must be able to execute orders and produce results. It will be better to Anni to keep the qualified, honest people in Civil service sector, take these Experts in running the Government.

  14. In reply to a comment made by "Cherub" on a previous post, please allow me to reply to that comment: It's true that my father (like many other MDP Supporters) were unhappy about certain appointments in the first few days of the new government, but that does not mean that any of us were agaisnt the government or the new president. Even if the vote were held again tomorrow, we will still vote for Nasheed. So don't confuse criticism with animosity. People criticise their own children or their own family also.
As for my father being critical because he wanted me to be offered some position in the government, well I think that's a twisting of the truth. As I said before, he did criticise but not for the above reason.
But I have to admit that he (like any father) would have wished that I was offered some post (he he)...But I have news for him (my father) and "Cherub" and any other doubters!
Even if I was offerd a cabinet or any other post in the new government I would not have accepted it. And even if I were offered such a post even now, I will not accept. Be it ministerial or ambassodorial or whatever. I'm simply not interested.
Some people confuse my interest in political-thought with p[olitical ambitions.
Some may now think that I'm planning to run for Majlis! Even that is off the mark. I have no such plans and I do not want a government post.
If Nasheed or any other Muslim is willing to give me something then there's something that I will accept from them. Say a prayer for me. Insha Allah, Allah will accept that prayer.
May Allah make this motherland a heavenly place for us and guide us.

I'm not from Thinadhoo but you have to respect the views of others. It is with help from Thinadhoo people and activists such as Jenifer Latheef too that u got your freedom back so please don't go overboard and try to sow hatred.
If Thinadhoo people don't like Nasir let them say so! It is their freedom to say so. We can always respectfully disagree.

  16. Bushry... bro, why is it that you always say stupid things like this??..... Tell me again WHY should we award a government post to Ismail Nasir!!!.... Government posts are not GIFTS that we keep to give to our buddies and favorites!!!

If he is qualified to be in any post then he can be given the opportunity... Every time we want to commend someone we can't just create posts for that person??.. investment advisor? what is that anyway??..

This is not the way to do it.... I think naming the National museum or Sultans Park after Ibrahim Nasir is a good idea.

Our love and respect for his family will continue. They are always welcome in this free country which their father had bequeathed to us.... they are our brothers n sisters- our family .... But nobody is getting a free government post without due course, necessity or justification.

  17. Nasir is already a hero, He has earned the highest honer a son of this nations could ever own.

Dont over do this in the excitement or grievance. If a man does a good deed/a selfless act we have a habit of praising him over and over, singing songs about him and taking him literally to the level of GOD and worshiping him. Maybe its because of out Buddhist/Indian heritage of idol worshiping.

That was what we did to Gayoom, and he started to act like the Supreme being. Naseer may be gone but lets not over do this praising thing.

Anni is using Zaki as the front man because Anni has no experience nor any idea what to say when meeting with these news briefings, meeting MWSC management. Zaki is like the fulhimadu unguri, he can be used for any post caz of his vast experience in diplomatic circle.

With Maumoon we had Abbas Ibrahim, With Anni we are having Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, these two people are of similar character, they are vengeful and revenge is always on their mind.

If only Anni could use the Experts in the Civil Services sector or even DRP, there are good people (uncorrupted) whom Anni could recruit to MDP to run the government instead of Giving Jobs to Lunatics and people who are unqualified in experience and knowledge.

  25. you, my dear friend is overdoing it a bit. nasir gulzar and nasiriyya park sounds extremely awkward and anyway sultan park is quite nice. what was it called during nasir's time? and a post for ismail nasir out of pity for all the wrongdoings for maumoon's atrocities against nasir and his family, i strongly oppose. if ismail nasir is willing to serve maldives out of his own accord, then he is most welcome. by the way we could call gayyoom hingun for some dark alley or gayyoom haruge to some place and make him feel honoured (and happy) instead of having to pay him a fat salary for just having been the president.

  29. Re-naming the Sultan Park as Nasiriyya Park is not a good idea. Coz the name has been there for centuries and the name itself acts as kind of "brand name" to promote our tourism industry.

If you want to name a park after Nasir, the best place would be the new park that the government has planned to build at the place where Nasandhura is located.

A more appropriate place no name or rename after Nasir could be Male' International Airport. I was just wondering this airport is names as MALE international airport after all it's built on Hulhule. I still don't understand why it was called MALE international airport. This name does not apply the same thinking that has been followed through in naming the rest of airports in Maldives. Perhaps a more appropriate name could be HULHULE international airport.

Nasir was the mastermind and chief architect for the planning and development of the international airport. So, i think the most appropriate name for the airport would be NASIR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT like BANDAARA NAIKE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT in Sri Lanka.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dear Bushry

These are all suggestions/ imaginary issues we are discussing here. How about discussing some real/current issues facing the nation. While we are busy building parks and renaming parks in Alice’s Wonder Land, back in the real world Anni is discussing the stated budget, privatizing the state companies and divesting of state owned companies.

Anni is going to sell the bulk of the state companies. Russia made a few local millionaires when is sold off the state companies in corrupt deals. This shouldn’t happen in our cases. By the way things are going Anni is handing out jobs as political favors dents his image as a corruptions free leader and a naïve leader. If the state is going to divest this should be done in proper way without the involvement of money hungry people like Mr Gasim and his pack of wolves in the Republican Party. These should be disscused with the public stake holders, employees of the respective companies and if it exists labor unions.

These deals could go very bad if the public don’t keep a watchful eye. Annis is a President who didn’t have experience managing his own household budget (his wife seem to be the bread winner in the family) or he lack experience even in holding a real job. The issue is he is surrounded by the wolf packs of Mr. Gasim, they will be scavenging for even a teeny-weeny chunk of that multibillion dollar deal of selling state companies.

Bush write about current issue and not imaginary ones; this way you are diverting the attention to some less important issue.

This is the culture we have been given to live with and thanks to Gayoom for having achieved what he had in plans for today.

May GOD Almighty give wisdom and guide us to the right path!

As for Mr.Bushry, please keep up your hard work as all the opposition newspapers are now gone showing us how sincere they were in doing what they did. some were banished to different atolls at the age of 4,7 ,9 and 12. [ the victims are still alive and with us today ]
many were brought to male and tortured to death without trial.
the island was burnt and the people made homeless [ depopulated?]
mothers with their new born babies had to flee the island
    some died of starvation
the list would go on forever…..
    these were crimes against humanity
do animals like him deserve to be praised?
ask your self ......what if some one like Gasim murdered your dad, raped your wife and tortured your son? would you say he should be considered noble and praise worthy as he has done more good to people?
has helped far too many people in every possible way, that what he did to you and your family shouldn't count?

  53. Bravo to Anni, he is reducing and cutting the duty on so many items.

Does he have any idea that he is cutting the income generating sources with out a plan B. Corporate Tax and income Tax laws are not even submitted to the parliament also the sale of Government companies will also go through the Parliament. With out knowing how these bills gonna be approved, cutting down the income sources for the government is suicidal.

Cutting the duty on diesel and other food items wont reduce the cost of sold in the market.
Goods are expensive because of the lack of competition in the market. mainly...reasons

Goods are imported mainly through TWO shipping companies.

    Lack of Ware housing facilities.

The so called Wholesalers are actually selling the goods at retail prices or even higher. These people are not wholesalers they are small time businessmen who default on things like shop reant and even staff salaries and loans repayments.

Goods will get cheaper if we introduce few multinational companies that do wholesale and retailing to the Maldivian market.

Duty should be abolished, but only after the introduction of a tax regime, otherwise the government is loosing revenue.

Well I guess Anni is doing this beacause as he said he is going to sell few Government Companies and EXPECTS SOME BIG BUCKS FROM THOSE DEALS, hehe then again that's also one off payment... if we dont have a proper tax regime we are actually loosing money/public finance.

Anni is just following the pack of wolves that Mr Gasim keeps in his Republican Party.

Also 50 years lease period is increased, what about the corresponding increase in lease rental payments. 50 Lease is of more value, a higher asset value, but Annis GENEROUS GOVERNMENT is ot asking for any increase in lease rentals. looks like Anni is becoming the lap dog of Mr.Gasim and his wolves.

im sorry, I cant even begin to comprehend where you are coming from. Your suggestions are so absurd on so many levels,
    1) why on earth should we rename "Sultan Park" as anything other than Sultan Park?, that is the site of the Traditional sutlans palace (which incidentally was destroyed by Nasir)
2)Nasir's final resting place is in the site popularly know as Hukuru msikiiy site. It is the resting place of most of our statesmen, why on earch should we change it to nasirs name, or even to one particular statesman? we are not north Korea bushry.
3)while the Government may have given them a raw and unfair deal on Velaanaage, fact is nasir did sell it.
4)Post for Ismail Nasir. frankly i find your words "to keep nasir's name in the service of this motherland, Government should offer some kind of post to nasir's family- specifically to Ismail Nasir" rather disturbing. meekee viraasee verikameh noon

look, the country has given HEP ibrahim Nasir the honour due and appropriate to former president. if Ismail nasir or other members wish to serve this country or start a business here, they should have the opportunities similar to other maldivians.
MDp government advocates democracy and how it will be a people's verikan. I for onne will most certainly protest if they go back on their word and reverts back to this culture of sustaining elitism, in this country.

  56. Do you really imagine we did President Nasir any favours, in his death. Do you really believe that President Nasir benefited one bit from the extraordinary circus around his death.

Do you realise that poor President Nasir is probably the only Maldivian since we accepted Islam some 800 years ago, who had the indignity and poor fortune to have his body subjected to such abuse as his body probably did - The use of chemicals, needles, knives and saws to delay burial.

What President underwent in death was what he would have probably described as tortue if he was living.

May Allah Give Peace to President Nasir.
