Inviting ex-president Ibrahim Nasir to the Maldives

Ibrahim Nasir was our second president - a leader who laid the foundations of our two most important industries, i.e. tourism and fisheries. Though he too had dictatorial traits during his presidency, Nasir was treated very unfairly and vilified by Gayyoom. Nasir lives in Singapore and never returned to Maldives during Gayyoom’s 30-year-rule. Now about 80 years old and extremely sick, many Maldivians want their former leader to return to Maldives even for a few days before he passes away.
It is something that Nasir deserves and something that many Maldivians want. It will also be a slap on the face of the outgoing president who tried his best to take credit for the good things that Nasir did to this country.
Hence many MDP supporters and a large chunk of the ordinary people want the president-elect Nasheed to invite Ibrahim Nasir to the Maldives even for a few days and to welcome Nasir as a state dignitary.

Gud idea. I would love to see him in Maldives. If he accept the inviation will give us a momentum to enhance our unity. If he can give a speach, his words will remain in our hearts for many years. Definitely he's a leader many of the Maldivian still admire.

Bushry. Are you insane. Nasir was responsible for genocide. On his order, hundreds of innocent people were massacred during southern civil war. I wouldn’t tag him as a respected ex president. Naasir deserves to be tried in a court of law for his crimes against people of Havaruthinadhoo.

Nop Amin Didi started the reform process.. i wonder if Nasir had a hand in bringing down the Amin Government but Nasir was a brutal dictator passed his tourch to Gayoom to continue the tyrany.

We dont want Nasir here, tell him to stay away.

One thing we have to teach our kids about our past history. Even i dont know much about the Amin Government or Nasirs regime... this is important to continue our democracy so the people will be aware of politicians and their lust for power.

It will not be a slap on the face of Golhaa it will be a slap on the face of thousands of Huvadhu people who were systematically jailed, banished to islands and starved to death, and separated from their families. It is time to read the real history.

Is it me or has Bushry has become a bit dumb after the elections?

Naisr has done bad things during his presidency but we can heal ourselves and start afresh if we invite him and close that chapter finally.

why not we invite all the dictators in the world and go for a photo shoot with Gayoom. After all Gayoom loves photgraphy and it will be a very unique photograph.

Remember if he ever returns there will be mass demonstrations by Havaru Thinadhoo people.

we fucking hate him, you dont know what he did to us what he did to Huvadhoo.

Once there was a time when Huvadhoo flew its own flag. Once there was a time when Havaru Thinadhoo had the richest among the Maldivians.

Nasir Knows this too. Bring Nasir to Maldives. He has to answer to Genocide, rape destruction of homes and systematic robbery.

No wonder he never visited Maldives, he knew his crimes against humanity were still fresh in peoples minds.

Bring him home. Let him answer the questions of Thinadhoo people, all orphans he created.

And directly we can take him to Thinaadhoo.

What about people like Kaafu DHaalu who participated and the numerous others who were responsible in driving the Thinaadhoo people to sea.

Really like that idea about a photo shoot after inviting all known dictators to Male'.

Golhaa need to be publicly humiliated and his sons/daughters given menial jobs and forced to pay rent for shelter in Male' now. I for one do not agree with Anni about this whole holier than thou merciful and forgiveness routine.

And yea, bring this Nasir bloke and send him to the roads of these islands these guys mentioned. I'm from Male' and too young to know the history behind these atrocities mentioned here. But if there is an ounce of truth in it, let him be cannon fodder for the masses. No criminal should just be let gone scot free.

The current prison system is a continuation of what Nasir left behind, right?

The reason why Gogo latheef is a 'politician' is due to Nasir.Same goes to Kerafaa family.

  18. Anonymous3/11/08 06:56

Well. Gogo Latheefs father was tortured and as a result that Latheefs father succumbed to death. The jail that Nasir locked Latheefs father was a storage building for construction material Uva (calcium oxide). Im from Addu and latheefs family is distant relatives of our family and we share in our family the same horror stories of Nasir as much as anybody else in Havruthinadhoo at that time.

Isnt it time that we changed our attitudes?? wahts the point of having such a bitter attitude when we have brought about the change majority wanted? We should let go of the past.. the past is there to learn from.. to not repeat the same mistakes.. but if we are going to go on doing the same things people did when maumoon came to power.. then what change is there? Sure Anni is being all forgiving... but why not? why hold bitterness now? why waste energy on that.. it would be muc better to focus all our energy on making this a better place. let go of the negativity.. whatever crimes are commited here on earth.. will eventually be judged and punished by a higher power... no one goes unpunished.. if not on this earth, then later.. for now if each of us could focus on being a more positive person, this country would surely see the other maldives...

Pinochet was a Chilean military dictator. During the military period of Pinochets regime, Pinochet systematically violated human rights of Chilean people so after the down fall his regime he faced several criminal processes until his death in 2006. So I don’t see any reason why we should not bring both Golhaabo and Naasir to justice.Lets Pinochets case as an example of justice.

Did Chilean dictator did all the massacre all by himself or with a team? If he did with a team, all those involved are guilty. If Maumoonu can be held accountable, then Zaki is also guilty

Huh, Ask Gayoom to get lost for God's sake. He has done enough harm to Maldivians. Most of the supporters are like those people living in North Korea. Go to North Korea and ask any of them, how is life and their answer would be, Very good. Because they never had a chance to see the other side of the world even in a photogaph. Like we call AL USTAZ MAUMOON ABDUL GAYOOM they also call their president OUR GREAT LEADER OR OUR DEAR LEADER. I feel sorry for my fellow country men who still keep praising a dictator who gave them just enough to survive withou dying.

Does Islam forgive people who has committed crimes against humanity? Does islam forgive,
    torture,
    rape,
    murder,
    setting fire to islands,
    banishing children & women
    etc....the list goes on...

Nasir did all this? it is easy for those of us who weren't there to say we forgive Nasir, but if we want a better society we have to respect our people, and let history be told as it happened and finally we start seeing "Adhul Insaaf"-Justice. I do not think anyone who suffered today really wants to make Nasir go thru the same, they just want history to witness what happened so that a genocide does not go unheard. the people of this nation needs to hear all what happened, so we know our history. And no one has the right to forgive a man who has committed xuch crimes against humanity and the teachings of Islam. May Allah send his light to our people so we follow the path of seeking the truth & standing for Justice. Amin

The militia led by KD Ahamed Manik committed horrendous crimes not alone damage to the property and stealing the wealth of the people of Havaru thinadhoo.KD Ahamed Manik is still alive as a manifestation of barbaric crimes. why not we collect evidence against him and take him to court. My grand father was killed by Nasirs soldiers. He was hiding behind a coconut tree to take cover from spree of bullets that Male soldiers were spraying indiscriminately , according to the family. How pathetic is a journalist like Bushry praise a killer so nicely. I don’t understand.

Anyone can give a brief account of Why Thinadhoo ppl revolted? I heard that they frustrated with some discriminatory policies of Nasir's govt

    ReplyDelete
  35. For those who are commenting without a hint of what happened during the 1959 revolt of the Souther Islands, let me try and give a very short update.

The revolt was not becuase we ( I am also from Addu) or our people had the capacity and capability to do it. There were a lot of grievances against the Government, but definitely less than what people had during the last years of Maumoon. The tipping point was Nasir basically took a U-Turn on the agreement signed with Maldives and the UK on the lease of Gan, and he ordered that work be stopped until the agreement was renegotiated. The Brits had by then spent millions of pounds and placed material and equipment in Gan.

The easiest way the Brits saw was to manipulate the locals who were on the brink of revolting due to many reasons. It was the British backing which empowered the people of Addu to breakaway. Mulah and Huvadhoo, being always closer in customs and language to Addu then Male' joined them.

For the Government of Maldives it was a revolt, hence they put it down where they could with force. (I am not justifying it). They could not come to Addu as British armed forces were backing the people of Addu (again because of advantages to them). In 1964, the Brits twisted the arms of Suvadive Government and forced a surrender. At the same time they negotiated with the Maldivian Government that no one should be punished.

It was no concidence that by this time Gan was rebuilt, and they mamanged to sign a new lease on their terms.
