President Nasheed in the Fish Market, Local Market, A Common House, Dhoonidhoo Jail, Rehab, Hulhumale and Villimale!

1. It will be nice if one day, without prior notice, President Nasheed visits the fish market in the afternoon. He meets the fishermen who are there. Chats with them regarding any ideas that they may have, which could improve their vocation and trade. Nasheed could encourage the fishermen and vendors to work hard and tell them some promising news about any policy changes that could help the fisheries sector.

2. It would also be nice if one day, without prior notice, President Nasheed visits the local market and chats to the vendors who sell locally produced agricultural and fisheries goods at the local market. The President could tell them about the government’s plans in the construction of the new building for the local market. Nasheed could encourage the farmers and vendors to work hard and tell them some promising news about any policy changes that could help the agricultural sector. Media (television, radio, newspapers, etc.) could be invited for both these visits. It will be a nice PR exercise as well as good encouragement for the fishermen and farmers.

3. It would be a pleasant surprise if President Nasheed visits a cramped household in Male and meet the residents of the house – and explain to them that his government is working on improving the housing conditions and tell them more about the 25,000 houses that the Chinese government has promised to build in the country. Media would be given an opportunity, during this visit, to question the President regarding his housing policy and the media could also question the residents of the house. The Housing Minister could accompany the President during this visit.

4. A government delegation, including the President and the Defense Minister and the Home Minister could visit the Dhoonidhoo jail. Media would be invited too. A small ceremony would be held. At this ceremony, the President would announce that all political prisoners, including (Sagaru) Luthfee and (Sagaru) Nasir, would be given a presidential pardon. It will also be announced that from that very moment the Dhoonidhoo jail would be closed and that the island would be used as a resort for locals. Due to its history as a jail for political prisoners and dissidents, Dhoonidhoo jail has been a notorious torture chamber over the past decades. By closing the jail and freeing the remaining political prisoners, President Nasheed would be opening a new era of unity and trust.

5. It would also be nice if President Nasheed visits the drug-rehabilitation centre at Himmafushi, unannounced, and meet the patients and staff there. He could chat with the patients and encourage them. He could tell the staff about the government’s new policies on drugs and rehabilitation.

6. It would also be nice if President Nasheed would arrive at the Hulhumale Ferry Terminal, unannounced, take a ferry dhoni to Hulhumale, visit the Hulhumale Development Unit and some of the selected households there and chat to the residents. He could chat to the people about the housing policies of the new government and also about the transport network that the government is trying to build between the islands.

7. The same (as in point six above) could be done for VilliMale. The President and his delegation could visit VilliMale (by a VilliMale Ferry Dhoni) unannounced and the media would be given the opportunity to cover the visit.

  1. Do you think its that easy to visit like that.
It would also be nice if Nasheed just fire Qasim, Hassan Saeed and Shaheed and all rest of the crooks who was in previous regime. Wouldnt it?

  2. Great idea for the president to visit the local market and the fish market and the rehab and villimale and hulhumale, etc. It's about time that he visits Addu Atoll too. If he doesn't visit Addu by the end of teh Eid holidays he may as well stay away from our atoll. We endorsed him by the highest percentage and where is the gratitude mr. president?
We need quick answers about laying tar on the roads of our islands and about utility services such as desalinated water and sewerage and the airtaxi base in Gan and a golf course in Gan and the yacht mariner in Addu Atoll and so on.
Please ask your transport minsiter to do something about the mounting numbers of accidnets on the Link Raod in Addu!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Dang! What we need is stronger policies than these publicity stunts. I guess it would be a much better idea to form an independent economic forum both with foreign and local expertise . Their studies regarding the industry/ housing etc could be published on a quarterly manner so that government can streamline the policies as required, by allocating funds, finding veture capitalists or investment firms to finance for these special projects.

Currently we don't manufacture or assemble on an industrial scale, this is one of the weakness that should be over come. We may have a booming Tourism industry, but subsidiary industries that goes synonymous Tourism like Handicraft or fruit/veg growers is almost non existent to cater to the Tourism Industry.

  4. Hi MR. Busry. Dont try to be a president of Maldives. any way president might have a such a plan in his mind.but dont try to take credit from it.

    ReplyDelete
  5. And we want the relevant Ministries and other forums like Tourism promotion board, Construction Industry forums, Trade forums etc to publish monthly forecasts and indexes comparatively, so that the public and the business community is aware of the economic condition of the country.

    ReplyDelete
  6. YEa this would definitely be a Golhaabo style publicity stunt to make news on everyday TVM 8pm news. And We dont like that!!!

  7. The land that occupied the Local Market could be attache Presidential Palace. This will be a good investment for future as we would have a Presidential Palace with enough land area to provide for the necessities of the President and his family.

  10. Reagrding the "Anonymous" Cooment at "22/11/08 15:50", it is perhaps worth noting that Mr. Amin Faisal who was a swon NSS Official at the time of the coup, took part in the coup. He is now free (and more importantly he is now our DEfence Minsiter). Mr. Shahid who was similarly an NSS Officer, who took part in the coup also has been freed now. He is expected to be the Addu Ato9ll Chief soon. Same can be said about Karo Abbas. He is also free now. So why should we punsih Sagarey and Luthfee for life if we are willing to pardon NSS officers who betrayed the state? Just a point to ponder. I think it's time that we freed Sagarey and Luthfee.

  11. To Any Mice who said that this will be a "Golhaabo style publicity stunt!", I have to say that I disagree. Yeah, true that Golhabo did this style of stuff but Nasheed should do this not just as a PR stunt but as an opportunity to get close to the people. If done with a sincere and big heart, this could be productive for the countrya dn thepeople and for the government too.

please read a mail a friend have sent it to me
"TEAM met with the minister of Tourism on thursday by invitation from him. We discussed about the law and the refusal from the resorts to obey the law. The minister tried to convince us that it is very diffcult for the resorts to follow the law because it involves finance and blah blah. Basically he was talking as if he is the chosen one to protect the rights of the resort owners. We were not happy at all with the out come of the meeting because he tried to give us many excuses why the resort owners cannot obey the Employment Act.
We asked for his help to enforce the law and he told us that it is not within his legal authority to do so under the new constitution. He refused to help us! Please call him and demand to help us enforce the law! Every phone call counts.
We are not sold out to the new government! If we have to protest outside Hilaaleege, we will do so. Because Anni told that the new consitution is protest constitution! We will do whatever is necessary to get our rights. Please also call the special envoy of President, Zaki to demand to help us, because he promised us that he will give full labour rights in an MDP government. He made this promise on Live TV on 27th October 2008 during our endorsement of MDP coalition."

  33. when nasir took over as the president of maldives, he made sure kilegefaanu was able to lead a normal and safe life in maldives. nasir forbade people from reverting to thier old ways of making life for the 'negunu katheeb' a living hell by singing songs and mistreating him. i think nasheed has learnt a lot from our nasir. if maumoon was a royal pain in the collective ass/es anni does not have to imitate maumoon's ungodly acts. just give nasheed a chance. he will prove to the maldivians that he is the one to bring true democracy to the maldives. we, i fear have been in the well for so long that some of us just don't see the bigger picture.

  46. One noticeable change after Anni came to power is the popularity of Bushry's blog. At the same time Anni's popularity is no longer going up.

If a proper correlation is done and if the results are extrapolated for the coming 2 years, there could be interesting results.

So far there has been backtracking on some pledges, such as Aarah, Ganduvaru, 300 Million, small government etc..

But we have not heard anything about election after 2 years. In any-case, this is a minor promise which may even be unconstitutional. Even if President Anni wants to have an elections, the constitution may not allow it as previously argued by Maumoon.

  47. The 'high' we all had from dumping a brutal dictator as well as the great expectations of are fading fast. When the dictator was there, we were united by anger and frustration at him and his corrupt family. But at least we had unity.

We still have our anger but there is no enemy to hate.

President Anni should create a new enemy (good scapegoat) fast or find a way to get the anger out of the people by keeping to his promises - which of-course is hard.

Who would be the most likely scapegoat? Guess.

You have lived for 30 years under Gayooms rule, watched your sons grow up to become drug addicts and seen how your dads were dragged into jail and beaten up.

So hold on to your breath a little longer, give Anni a chance. he will be ten thousand times better than Gayoom

  58. Bush while you are busy doing all the writings, why dont you give some insight to the opposition. Point some potential leaders within the opposition circle.

Kutti Nasheed has mentioned the need of internal democracy with in his party and the change of leadership. Ex Tourism Minister Dr Mausoom is already on campaigning for MP. There definitely will be good people to lead the DRP, i guess currently they are so quiet caz their going through some major changes/transition in its leadership hierarchy.

  63. Yea Furahani Shuaib is a not qualified for that post, I thought he was mentally ill person. Anyway that job was given as a political favor or to make him hush up on criticism.

I wonder how these political favors are repaid in other matured democracies. Is it the same was or some other other way?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Actually this repayment of these political favors is a early sign of weakness in Annis policies.

Because strong political ties discourage global financing, corporate transparency is less
likely to improve in countries where political connections dominate economic activity.

  65. "anony mice...Gayoom was no different in his first few years"

    ReplyDelete
  69. Allow me to make a small comment on "Cherub"! It's true that my father (like many other MDP Supporters) were unhappy about certain appointments in the first few days of the enw government, but that does not mean that any of us were agaisnt the government or the enw president. Even if the vote were held again tomorrow, we will still vote for Nasheed. So don't confuse criticism with animosity. People criticise their own children or their own family also.
As for my father being critical because he wanted me to be offered some position in the government, well I think that's a twisting of the truth. As I said before, he did criticise but not for the above reason.
But I have to admit that he (like any father) would have wished that I was offered soem post (he he)...But I have news for him (my father) and Cherub and any other doubters!
Even if I was offerd a cabinet or any other post in the new government I would not have accepted it. And even if I'm offered such a post even now, I will not accept. Be it ministerial or ambassodorial or whatever. I'm simply not interested.
Some people confuse my interest in political-thought with p[olitical ambitions.
Some may now think that I'm planning to run for Majlis! Even that is off the mark. I have no such plans and I do not want a government post.
If Nasheed or any other Muslim is willing to give me something then ther's something that I will accept from them. Say a prayer for me. Insha Allah, Allah will accept that prayer.
May Allah make this kotherland a heavenly place for us and guide us.

  70. It would be great if Anni and the new governement get real and attend to the country's growing economic woes.

Likewise, it would be great if Bushry and other journlists could stop suggesting to Anni to engage in more publicity seeking stunts, and instead attend to rebuild our economy which is in shambles.

It would also be nice if hardcoe Gayyoom & Yameen loyalists posing here as anti- Qasim, anti -Dr Hassan and anti- Dr Shaheed MDP loyalists would come to their senses and stop blaming these individuals for Gayyoom's loss in th election. Bitterness towards them will not conceal your true colours! Instead, everyone should now lobby the government to dig us out of the deep economic hole that Maumoon left us in.
