I totally condemn the use of disproportionate force by the Maldives Police against peaceful demonstrators at Reethirah Resort

I totally condemn the use of disproportionate force by the Maldives Police against peaceful demonstrators at Reethirah Resort last night. The staff at the resort were protesting and demanding that they be granted the rights that are due to them under the newly passed Employment Act. If Bandos Island resort can fully implement this labour law and grant all the rights to the staff, why can’t other resorts such as Reethirah and Villa-Resorts implement this law. The owner of Villa Resorts being the Home Minister, perhaps it is more appropriate that he be the first resort owner to grant the rights to the staff under this law.

It is doubly disappointing that the Maldives Police, which is directly under the orders of Home Minister Gasim (who is the owner of Vila Resorts), has to use force against the protesting staff. Perhaps Gasim approved this in order to please the management of Reethirah Resort. Perhaps he wanted to show that he will fight for the rights of all resort operators.

Gasim is involved in this issue not only on the side of the Maldives Police. Tourism Minister Ali Sawad is also a senior official of Gasim’s Jumhooree Party. Sawad got the tourism portfolio because of Gasim’s insistence so it is obvious that Sawad will follow Gasim’s instructions on this.

It is time for Gasim to show that he cares about the people and that he cares about the rule of law. But I do not support IDP-leader Umar Naseer's opportunistic involvement in this. Though I support the claims of the resort staff to get their rights, Umar and the DRP-gang are trying to create trouble to achieve their political ambitions. So, I call upon the government and the Tourism Minsiter to solve this problem in an amicable way so that opportnists such as Umar do not get any room to exploit.

The law has given certain rights to workers, including those who work at resorts. If Gasim and this government use disproportionate force in order to suppress the rights of people, then what difference does it have with Gayyoom’s regime? It is time for President Nasheed and Tourism Minister Sawad and the Home Minister Gasim to show some leadership and solve this current impasse in the resorts before this thing blows out of proportion!

  3. Good question! BTW where is Sawad hiding? Doesn't this prove (so soon after his appointment) that he is incapable to lead the tourism industry? Doesn't this also show that Sawad being a puppet of Gasim (it is dangerous to let a resort owner control the tourism industry). Comeon Nasheed and Sawad and Gasim! Do something....

  4. Mr. Deen of Bandos Island Resort has again shown that though he doen't dish out money to the public as much as Gasim does, Deen is more caring and wiser. Gasim and Sawad are now shooting themselves in teh foot and shooting Nasheed's foot too, in the process.

  8. Miaa Kudey is busy taking care of a young boy (under 10) and Moho is suffering from a hangover and Thasmeen is trying busy trying to convince a senile old man that he should resign from the top post of DRP. How can these three people find time to worry about poor workers at their resorts!

  16. The Constitution gives the right to strike. But there MUST be enabling legislation in place to regulate how strikes take place.

The exisiting Employment Act does not take into consideration Employers' rights. Not only that. It is impractical for the privtae sector (not just resorts) to implement all the requirements of this Law. But people are only talking about resorts not complying with this stupid law. Can anybody tell me if all the domestic servants in the Maldives are given all the rights in the Law? Or if the construction industry, the fishing industry etc. is complying? No. Because what should be written down in Employment contracts have been written into Law which actually will vary from indstry to industry.

The strike in One & Only is going to do lasting damage to our tourism industry at a time of economic crisis everywhere in the world. Some of the wealthiest and most famous guests visit One & Only and for these guests to be subjected to such lack of service and the sight of Star Force on the island will result in top travel agents and tourists avoiding the Maldives in future. They can always go somewhere else where there is no trouble.

This is not a problem for Reethi Rah or One & Only. This is national crisis of immense magnitude. The damage to our industry is going to be severe. In fact One & Only is going to pull out of the Maldives. Several other top end hotel chains will also pull out if this continues.

So who will be the loosers in the end? Which jobs would there exist?

    ReplyDelete
  17. The government must take immediate action to resolve this crisis. We cannot afford to have a repeat of such strikes in resorts.

The President should discuss with resort owners and employee association to find a solution to all this.

And the majlis will have to amend this law immediately to make it suitable for everyone, while providing necessary protection to employees and employers.

  22. employment law is not even fit for civil service. ever since teh law has passed in any day 50 percent of employees are absent as salan.

it is called salaamuge chuty and gives 30 days even wihtout producign a medical certificate. and it also allows another 30 day yearly chuty

In which country gives 60 days as leave per year. it seems as if everyone is pregnent. productivty of civil service is so low after this low. you will often find that the person involved is not there if you call to an office.

the majlis should amend the law based on itnernational standards.

  23. Employment Law is not even fit for the Civil Service. Ever since the law was passed, in any given day 50 percent of employees are absent (“Salan”). This is called “Salaamuge Chuttee” and the Law gives each employee the right to have 30 days of this “Salaamuge Chuttee” without even producing a medical certificate. On top of that this Law gives another 30 days as annual leave (“Aharee Chuttee”). Tell me another country that gives 60 days of annual leave. It seems as if everyone is pregnant or sick! Productivity of the civil service is so low after the implementation of this Law. The Majlis should amend this law to conform it more to international practices and also make it more practical to our civil service, fisheries industry, construction industry, etc.

  24. Now the Maldivian employees of Anantara (another international chain resort) are on strike in Male'! Ritz Carlton is now considering pulling out of Maldives for this and other reasons. That property is not yet open.

With this climate, no reputed international company will invest in the Maldives. Our competitors like Seychelles and Mauritus will be happy to see this day.

India had its terrorist attack in Mumbai targetting top luxury resorts. In Maldives one of our finest resorts and its wealthy guests have been subjected to horific treatment because of the short-sided approach of some employees.

The government is bankrupt thanks to Maumoon. Instead of tightening our belts and trying to recover from economic crisis, we seem to be on a suicidal path. In other countries, staff are willing to take pay cuts to keep businesses operating. Here, we see a different picture.

If we damage our industry like this, the reputation of Maldives as a destination for the rich will be history. Instead, we will be like Sri Lanka trying to get some charter traffic resulting in huge loss of revenue to the country and a drop in income for all Maldivian citizens. This is not going to be a loss for resort owners only. Every single one of will suffer.

    The future looks bleak!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anon (30/11/08 18:54): That is scaremongering. Besides, we need ethically responsible investors, not just any investors. If "Ritz Carlton" wants to fuck off over this legitimate strike, let them do so. There is no short-sightedness in fighting for rights that had been denied for so long.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes anon 19:20. that's the spirit. these short sighted maldivians who write here probably never knew anything about any employment laws that are in effect in any other country for the last several decades. EVERYONE need their rights ... the civil servants, the private sector staff, tourism staff, etc. everyone. keep it up guys. these ppl will eventually give in and you guys benefit. that is how RIGHTS are won!

what a bunch of morons to think that sick leave and other sort of leave are not a basic REQUIREMENT, that it not part of the international civil services code (basis for any such laws in countries now). ofcouse ppl will abuse these things in the early days ... how you compensate for such things are by boosting staff morale in the companies ... not by treating them like animals. would you rather have some LOYAL staff who work really long hours ('cas they want to ) or a bunch of disgruntled employees who just "work" for the sake of completeting a number of hours.

Good work, staff of RR Resort!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Very smart fellas, the Anantara management. They ALLOWED staff to take part and conduct in today's strike in Male'. Will show the tourism community that some International chains support staff morale and staff rights. PLUS points for them. Visitors will appreciate this sort of behavior from hotel managements.

Real negative impact on Reethi Rah Management. Losers!

After all this is an industry with very competing hotel chains and brands. To move forward it would be folly not respect things like staff and employment laws.

What a bunch of morons these RRR management are. Hehehe.

And while all this in unfolding where is that pussy SAWAD! Seems it was the prez. office envoy at RRR to check this out as well. Not the tourism minister. Sawad, get lost!

I would like to propose a simple solution to all recent resort strikes. Some will not agree, but all those sensible enough to understand the big picture will agree with me in taking immediate measures to protect and facilitate development of our lucrative luxury tourism segment. The parliament needs to approve a law to allow our luxury resorts to employ 80% foreigners without any conditions no matter how unpopular it may be. The people of the Maldives benefit as the government could impose higher visa fees for the additional foreign employees. Only such a brave move by the parliament could ensure the luxury resort operators from providing uninterrupted services which is also the main reason they can afford to contribute to the national budget with high taxes. We cant afford to undermine such a crucial industry just because of few monkeys.

No sensible person will expect miracles overnight. The staff benefits offered by these resorts at present are thousands of times better than 3-4 years ago. So what is this fuss about? These people are just irresponsible and unproductive. If you dont like the job in a resort why not find another job?

Why don't you resort owners also get 100% foreigners to live in this country so that you will not face any problems from us?

Or why don't you clone Buruma, Champa, Mohodhey, Sim and your bunch so there will be only people like you in the Maldives?

it becomes a crucial industry when you have to eanr your multimillion dollars. it doesn't become crucial when workers labour day and night.

This is not the way to defend the resort owners. I think we can ask level headed people to go and negotiate these disputes. Sending police to resolve issues is not the type of democracy we expect from Anni and Gasim. If Gasim will send cops to resolve labour disputes one more time, Gasim and his Republican party can say goodbye in any future election. Anni must get involved and resolve this matter amicably. We don't want resort owners like Gasim to act like thugs.

This is a very serious issue, and we will not let this go away unless the staff are given due rights. What is the difference between gasim and Golha. The MPs must call for a serious meeting and must ensure that Gasim cannot send cops whenever he likes to protect resort owners. Anni should not leave this issue for Gasim to resolve. Soon the people will find Gayoom a lesser devil than MDP made us believe.

MDP is having a lot of brainwashed sheep's. Near the Parliament they are calling to increase lease resorts to 99 years.

These kind of show offs by MDP leaders tarnish their reputation and reduce the popularity of the party.

These kind of actions by MDP make people question themselves why they joined MDP. The popularity is slowly grinding to a halt. Why? All because of unpopular policies and questionable appointments.

I guess without further damage to the party, they should put corrective measures to correct the policies.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous1/12/08 12:01

Why is Annis government not taking any corrective measures? The opposition is gaining momentum from the resort lease fiasco and appointment of 3 Nov traitors.

Every single day these issues are not resolved, MDP is loosing the popular vote; Infact i have told friends and family not to vote for MDP or coalition endorsed candidates in the upcoming parliamentary election. MDP's popularity could pick up & voters may chage their mind if MDP take corrective actions.

The best thing that could have happened to the Maldives would be to have Maumoon as the president of this country. With MDP & whoever else as the opposition in the majlis.

But that's over now. Ta Ta!!! As usual the stooopid Maldivians made a retarded decision and put this bloke and his criminal friends in power. WE R SCREWED!!!! Kekekeke! Now there is no opposition either.

CHANGE HAS COME!!! Now cry everyone!!! Hehehehehehe!!!!

we will not for mdp. we will vote for drp, slp and dhivehi qaumee party to make sure mdp does not have majority. that way there will be real check and balance. otherwise we will wake up to see the whole maldives and its people sold as salves by the puppet president of resort owners.

Although this government doest treat protesters like Gayoom did, someone needs to teach them how to protest! This is not how a civilized protest should take place. Gayyoom came to power and uprooted all links to Nasir. When a dictatorship is changed it will be folly to assume that the outgoing-dictator's cronies and friends and supporters will go queitly. Hence it will be folly for Nasheed if he allows Gayyoom to move smoothly as he is doing now, until the February-parliemntary-election. If Gayyoom's DRP win a substantial amount of seats he and his cronies will try to cerate more unrest and even try to impeach presidnet Nasheed. So the ebst thing to do is slwly push the dictator and to cut him to his size.
For example the police could summon him to dhoonidhoo "for a few questions". He has to go there by the usual dhoonidhoo ferry. Ask him a few innocuous questions and let him go. This sort of psychological thing could cut the old man to his real size.

Waving to a stage-managed crowd, in front of Jetty Number 1. As if he is still the president. When the story fo the expensive bullet-proof car came up, Gay-yoom says that it was the MNDF who wnated to buy that car. Has he forgotten that he is the head of the MNDF. If someone says that the palace (Theemuge) is too exhorbitant and expensive, Gay-yoom will say that it was the MNDF who said that the presidnet would need such a fortress if they have to provide adequate security. Everything is someone elses fault and nothing is Gay-yooom's fault. The guy doesn't take responsibilty for anything. Even as far as his promsies to the public are broken...he says that he promised by saying "God willing (Insha Alalh)" and that if the promsie is not carried out it's God's fault! What a lier. What an irresponsible loser.

I cant understand why some of the people are trying to justity every bad move that anni makes by saying that maumoon did the same thing. we were promised ‘aneh dhivehiraajje’. and we expected it to be different from what we had seen the past 30 years. but from what i have seen the past 3 weeks..i have a feeling that things would be much worse under anni. i dont think anni is listening to the feelings of ordinary citizens like us. there is no rule of law….the constitution does mean a thing. and if ayone says anything about it..they are portrayed as anti-anni…and agents of maumoon.
man..our country is in a sorry state….and we can only hope that things would get better…may Allah bless us all!!!

Say what you will, believe what you will, but until the day Pr.Maumoon left office the office had respect. For those who think Maumoon will ever serve a sentence, dream on, he will never have to serve a sentence nor likely to face a prosecution led by the Government. If anyone of you have enough evidence to convict him why not sue him !

  113. May Allah Give the President the courage to go ahead, with sagesse. The Choices are clear. I hope the President will take this chance to steer the ship of Maldives according to the path mapped out in the Koran and Hadis.

The President needs sound advice and we pray that the Islamic scolars take on their responsibility of giving the President advice not on what they think, but what the Koran and Hadis dictate.

What a pleasent surprise it would be that Maldians as a people strive together to see that their elected reps work and act according to the Koran and Hadis. If this happens, certainly honest workers would and should be treated as such.

    May Allah Bless us all.
