Look at the way the destiny works! While a despot (Gayyoom) who has ruled for over 30-years was in his full power, a “small” activist (Nasheed) came and dethroned him. Now, dictator Gayyoom’s political foe (former president Nasir) passes away after a long-standing illness – as if he was waiting to pass away only after witnessing the fall of Gayyoom’s dictatorial regime.
To add icing to this cake, Nasir’s lifeless body is being brought from Singapore (where he has been in exile for the past 30 years), to be buried here after a full state funeral. Now ex-dictator Gayyoom has the nerve to say on Dhi-FM radio that Nasir was a great statesman. If Gayyoom regarded Nasir so highly why did he encourage a whole nation to mock and vilify him?
At this time of mourning, I would like to humbly request that Nasir should not be buried at Aasaharaa-Cemetery. I think it will be most appropriate that he be buried at Medhu Ziyaarai. If this isn’t appropriate for some, then at least bury Nasir in Hukuru Miskyth. It will also be most appropriate if the wake (Moonudhekkun) were held at Theemuge (the "araamuhaanaa" of ex-dictator Gayyoom!

In the end, the brunt fell on the shoulders of the Chagossian islanders when they were forcibly evacuated to live in slumps on the dirty coasts of Mauritius and Seychelles. Had the British wished to wash clean the Divehin in this archipelago of the Maldives, it could have been simply done. However, the British Parliament ruled out support to the mallet partisans in Addu and the Suvadives due to a downfall in British Economy that resulted from losing resourceful territories.

Mid you The British had plans for Seenu Feydhoo, to make accommodation for their airmen. Who knows what they were planning to to do the rest of the islands. The whole atoll would have been a great military base for then, a chain of islands with a natural harbor.
Nasir was Predident when tourism began generating wealth. For that he should be given credit, not Maumoon. But Nasir let tourism bring in too much immorality, the religious in Maldives were locked in conflict with the tourism business men. A reconcilliation seemed impossible, either religion had to be oppressed or else tourism had to be repressed. The situation was a nightmare. Maumoon's ability to somehow reconcile the growth of the tourism sector by making foreigners own, serve at bars and outlawing nudity and disrespect of Islam somehow reconciled tourism with religious fervour. Maumoon was chosen by the business people, for that reason, he started as a puppet of the business people because somehow he could religiously sanction tourism. Maumoon was a puppet religious scholar who tried to become the puppeteer, but when he became the enemy he was uprooted by the business people who funded the constitutional overhaul because they could see that maumoon nol longer was in their best interests. Maumoon was never anything but a good religious preacher, Ali Maniku and others told him what to do till Maumoon got too big aheaded and attempted to make decisions against Kolige' clans interests. Yamin coming into as a threat to Gasim, that was a threat to Kolige'. However, let us not forget Nasir started tourism industry, and no matter what all the wealth and power of Maumoon, the money which bought Thgeemuge and NSS protection was made possible by Nasir's decisions.

An interesting story on Haveeru about some people in Huvadhoo-Island-Thinadhoo protesting that the national flag is on half mast to respect Nasir. (Nasir crushed the Huvadhoo rebellion and there are bitter memories hidden in that event. So some wounds are still raw). It is perhaps the time for the state to compensate the proplr of Thinadhoo to some extent and give a public apology on behalf of the state.

Addu was not satisfied with just a separatist government in Addu, they were intent to spread this north, to Foah Mulaku and then Huvadhoo. While innocent lives were lost, no elected government will do nothing and allow the distruction of a nation. Thinadhoo was also not so innocent, goment officials were treated with much cruelty one person even killed, Gadhoo was severly punished for siding with the government. evaru veema the government sought public opinion and acted as the rest of the country demanded. As for the issue of compensation, the people of Thinadhoo who were rehabilated on Hulhule' were provided with jobs and given land on Male after reclaiming the land. thinadhoo people was also given the opportunity to go back to thinadhoo. a separatist movement will always have consequences and it is the obligation of an elected government to contain and resolve it.

ReplyDeletelike it or not, nasir was one hell of a president. he deserves the respect nasheed has given. perhaps a lot of us are so mislead by 30 years of dictatorship we have forgotten all his service to our country. nasir's modesty is what i really like about him. unlike maumoon who thrived on the limelight, nasir was content to see the people fed, happy and united. addu-thinadhoo uprising was, i agree his weakest point of his rule. but it was inevitable. what steps he ultimately took to crush the rebellion was as a last resort. no president would want his people to be divided, atleast not for some good reasons. the british perhaps did have a hand in stirring up some rebellions in the midst, but what nasir did though ruthless was his only means of keeping the nation as one. in the 2nd world war, churchill although he is now considered one of the greatest patrons of world peace, took some drastic decisons which resulted in a lot of britians their life.

its quite difficult to maintain a debate here with so many anonymouses. i agree with the anonymous (23/11/2008).
ReplyDeleteto the anonymous who responded to my comment, if genuine greviences remain, those who suffered should seek justice if that is what they want. since I myself was not born at the time, I can only read and discuss these events to satisfy my own curiousity and interest to understand the history of this country. I am neither a historian, nor a politician. but i have never read anything about a mass massacre. any knowledege i have on this issue is based written articles, and discussions with senior citizens who were in the civil service then, and by discussions with families from Thinadhoo who were resettled in Male'and who live in Thinadhoo.
Whether some of like it or not Nasir was a pivotal in tranforming the economic and social development of this counry, and maunoon's government was responsible for vilifying and keeping the truth from us all. If only for one thing he did, independence from the British, he deserves the respect and a state funeral. In my opinion, the people needed this closure, and i believe the sheer number of people who queued up in the rain to pay their last respects suggests that most maldivians are supportive of this. these include people from the south.
